In a news conference Tuesday morning, investigators said they came up with several good leads last night. They also said they conducted a vehicle checkpoint in the area which is an in-house protocol that detectives and administrators train for in cases of missing children. Investigators would not detail the nature of the searches.
Sheriff's officers said they are confident in a general timeline surrounding Haleigh's disappearance, and are continuing to look at everybody as a suspect.
Only officials with the sheriff's office will continue to search for the missing girl.

Investigators Begin 2nd Week In Hunt For Haleigh
Sheriff To Family: 'Do Not Give Up Hope'
POSTED: Tuesday, February 17, 2009
<snipped>
For six days, teams of up to 300 people, along with boats, divers, bloodhounds and aircraft searched and researched a five-mile radius around the doublewide mobile home where Haleigh lived with her younger brother, father and his girlfriend.
WJXT-TV reported that investigators have interviewed Croslin, Cummings, Haleigh's mother Crystal Sheffield, and extended family members and friends who had contact with Haleigh in the hours and days before she disappeared. Lie-detector tests were administered to most of them.
Rose said a canvas of the Hermet's neighborhood and check point along Buffalo Bluff Road -- the only access to the home park -- on Monday afternoon and evening generated several new leads that they would be following up on Tuesday.

Capt. Rose said their teams gained several important leads in the secondary canvas, but wouldn't disclose what any of them were. He did say that leads were still coming in locally, statewide, and out of state, and that they were following up on each one. Asked if officials had come up with a suspect or suspects yet, Rose said, "We are still looking at everybody as a suspect at this time."
The next scheduled news conference is at 4 p.m. We will bring it to you live on First Coast News and firstcoastnews.com. Of course, if there's a major break in the search before then, we'll bring it to you as it happens.

Deputies Tweak Haleigh’s Description In Amber Alert
Tuesday, February 17, 2009 4:28:59 PM

<snipped>
Deputies did slightly change the Amber Alert out for Haleigh, saying she wasn't wearing a pink shirt when she vanished as first thought. Investigators would not release information about what the polygraph tests showed, or comment on whether they still believe Croslin is telling the truth.

Officials would also not answer questions about Croslin, including where she was, and if she had access to a car during the time Haleigh disappeared from her Satsuma home. They simply said they are looking at everyone.

Ryan said investigators are looking into about 1,200 leads, but they still haven't located the missing girl.

New Information About Home Haleigh Disappeared From

About ten years ago, a different family rented the double wide trailer where Haleigh Cummings lives. Dr. Jesse Smallwood, a minister, used to live there with his family. He's now in Georgia.
Smallwood remembered the house and said its floors were noisy. He said if someone was walking inside, he could hear them even if they were on the other side of the house. "Someone could not carry the child out of that house unless someone was in a drunken stupor, and not hear that child being taken from that house," Smallwood said.

Croslin also said Ronald Cummings, Haleigh's father, checked the locks before he left for work. Beyond the lock, Smallwood says the way the home is tucked into the woods makes it a perfect place for someone to snatch a child. "You could park down into the trees and walk right up," Smallwood explained. "If you were going to abduct someone, all you would have to do is sit back there and no one would see you."

Former Tenant Talks About Haleigh's House

The floor creeks, the back door sticks and makes a scraping noise, and you can feel other people walking in the house.
Smallwood stresses that the next owner(s) may have made upgrades to the rickety structure, but he remembers complaining often about the home to his landlord. "If someone was even trying to creep across the house, the floor creeks," Smallwood explained by phone.

Smallwood and his wife now live in Claxton, Georgia, but during that year they spend living at 202 Green Lane in Satsuma, Florida, Smallwood says the nights were scary for his then 9-year-old son. "He was scared of the dark, and we had a security light put in there," Smallwood says, and goes on to describe the area around the mobile home. "If there was no security light, it was pitch, absolutely black."
"You could park down in the trees," he explains, "if you were going to abduct someone, all you would have to do is sit back there and no one would see you watching the house."

The family of Haleigh Cummings wants people to get to know the little girl.
Her grandmother says too much of the focus seems to be on the search, how it's going, where they're looking, and how many people are searching.

She says people need to understand the 5-year-old better.
Her favorite movie is "Air Bud." Her favorite color is red.
She's a huge Hannah Montana fan.

This personal knowledge of the missing 5-year-old comes from a family who has spent the last week sleeping in tents heated by portable propane heaters.

Investigators Following More Than 1,000 Tips

PALATKA, Fla. -- Since an Amber Alert was issued for 5-year-old Haleigh Cummings one week ago, more than 1,000 tips have poured into a Crimestoppers hot line; and until Tuesday afternoon investigators have not released specific information about the leads they've received.
However, on Tuesday, new information was released that Haleigh's father's girlfriend, 17-year-old Misty Croslin, may not have been at home the night Haleigh disappeared.
Investigators in Putnam County said they are looking into the Croslin tip as a possibility.

Hope Service Held For Haleigh
Over the past week, family and friends of Haleigh have come together to pray for the child's safe return during candlelight vigils. On Tuesday afternoon, instead of gathering for an outdoor candlelight vigil, they met a church a few miles from the Cummings' home.
Haleigh's father, Ronald Cummings, and her mother, Crystal Sheffield, sat side-by-side throughout the service as they held their son and listened to words of encouragement. Croslin was also at the service, sitting on Cummings' other side.

The city of Jacksonville nearly went numb when police found Maddie Clifton, Sheila DeLongis' daughter, dead and stuffed under the waterbed of her teen neighbor ten years ago.
[Crystal Sheffield's book on her daughter Haleigh remains open, the ending uncertain.
DeLongis gave Sheffield a toy stuffed animal.

Investigators Push for Tips in Search for Haleigh
Updated: 2/18/2009 5:53:28 AM

PALATKA, FL -- Mounted on horseback, Haleigh's father Ronald Cummings continues to search the area with friends and volunteers. Both sides of the family are saying they are canvassing the area again.
At Putnam County E.O.C Headquarters the case continues to intensify. Detectives are now saying the five-year-old was not wearing a pink shirt.

The main focal point investigators say is Haleigh's face and what she looks like.
That is what they want people to concentrate on after evaluating all leads up to this point.
"We have found that you know what, that was not the best description that we know today. So we changed the Amber Alert, and information is key. We don't want people focusing on that if it's not part of the investigation, and it's not part of the investigation today," says Det. Dominick Pape with FDLE.

PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. -- Eyewitness News discovered that the Putnam County Sheriff's Office is investigating Ronald Cummings' girlfriend, who claimed that she was at home and sleeping when Haleigh Cummings was taken. But a tip puts the spotlight on the 17-year-old girlfriend. The most recent information investigators got was that Ronald Cummings' girlfriend, Misty Croslin, may not have been home when Haleigh disappeared from her Satusum house early last week.
Obviously that puts a spotlight on her now, if that's the case," said Captain Dick Schauland. "We have a team of detectives that are following up on this and yes they are questioning her about that."
In a news conference Wednesday (watch news conference), Schauland said the information is one of the 1,200 tips that investigators are looking into. He says he doesn't know if it panned out. He says detectives have interviewed family members and girlfriend Misty Croslin several times.

SATSUMA -- Despite following up on hundreds of leads, Putnam County deputies said they're no closer to finding missing 5-year-old Haleigh Cummings.
Deputies will hold a press conference at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday to discuss the next course of action.

"We were able to come up with several good leads that we are following up on," Rose said. "Those leads, as I said, were a result of doing the neighborhood canvas last night."
Investigators conducted spot searches Tuesday based on those leads. So far, all of those leads have come up short.

Investigators question girlfriend's story in Haleigh case

Authorities were originally told the 5-year-old was last seen wearing the pink shirt. That's the information they released to the public in the Amber Alert and on missing-person fliers about the girl, who lives in the small town of Satsuma. On Tuesday, investigators wouldn't discuss details of the pink shirt in their possession -- how they found it, where it was and whether it will be tested for any forensic evidence.
Several people have taken polygraph tests, including Haleigh's father and Croslin. Investigators would not release information about what those tests showed or comment on whether they still think Croslin is telling the truth.

SATSUMA, FL -- The mother, father and grandmother of Haleigh Cummings are at the Putnam County Sheriff's Office right now. Moments ago, Marie Griffis, Haleigh's grandmother, told First Coast News that deputies had told her to pick up Crystal Sheffield, Haleigh's mother, and take her to the Sheriff's Office.

Griffis left in a hurry, according to First Coast News Chief Investigative reporter Jackelyn Barnard. Haleigh's father, Ronald Cummings, was taken there by the lead detective in the case.
The flurry of activity came hours after a news conference where investigators announced little except the tip about Misty Croslin not being at the house when Haleigh vanished.
