At 16 Cyntoia Brown Killed A "Customer" Should she be Released from Prison?

Approximately 75 people attended a rally in Nashville today to urge clemency for CB.

Interesting that none of the celebrities, entertainers, or politicians participated who are so vocal in supporting clemency for CB on twitter and in the media. Don't you wonder why they are conspicuously absent-- especially the local politicians and clergy who have exploited the situation?

IMO, none of the celebrities, entertainers, or politicians *actually* support CB -- their superficial "support" for her is vanity/ virtue signalling to achieve more publicity for themselves.

Good news in MN to help human trafficking victims.

Hope this helps.

She is finishing up a degree? For what?

She is going to need a ton of support. Hopefully she has learned and understood that she is somebody, not just a throw away tool

It is amazing how much stuff people getting out of prison need, and most are just sent out the door with $50.

She will need to get an Identification card, Social Security card, probably eligibility for food stamps. See about medical care, and birth control. A place to live, and intensive case management to help her find employment, a place to live.

This is good news, I hope her supporters stick around to help her.

Following Cyntoia Brown clemency, new bill focuses on self-defense for child sex victims (with clip)

January 10th 2019

"NASHVILLE, Tenn.--In the wake of Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam granting clemency for Cyntoia Brown, a new bill has been introduced in the legislature which could prevent future circumstances like Brown's....

Just one day later, HB 0017 was introduced in the Tennessee legislature with it's Senate version SB0024 introduced the following day.

Sponsored by Senator Brenda Gilmore and Rep. London Lamar, the bill would establish a presumption that any minor who is a victim of a sex crime can use force to defend themselves.

Sen. Gilmore says the bill was molded after the Castle Law which gives homeowners the right to protect their property with the use of deadly force in self-defense should they feel they are in danger.

In this case, any minor who is the victim of a sexual offense or sex trafficked into prostitution would have the right to defend themselves as necessary. "We say children can't do many adult things and we don't punish them as adults for a variety of crimes but when they defend themselves we treat them like adults," Gilmore says...."

Cyntoia Brown featured on ABC’s ‘Nightline’

"...Wednesday night, Brown’s story was featured on ABC’s “Nightline”, a late-night news program. The story examined everything from the factors that led to her sentence to the next steps to come after her release in August 2019.

The broadcast highlighted moments from the documentary Me Facing Life: Cyntoia’s story. The story was brought to Lipscomb’s campus in 2010, while Brown was working towards her associate’s degree from the University. The film was shown to Lipscomb students free of charge for the HumanDocs series that aimed to “encourage dialogue among students, faculty, and community members about pressing issues of social and economic justice and the environment.”

The HumanDocs film series included a panel discussion with several notable figures in Brown’s case, including Lipscomb professor Preston Shipp, a former appellate prosecutor for Brown’s case who ended up becoming her teacher through the LIFE Program.

Shipp’s coincidental presence in Brown’s life was highlighted in Nightline’s story. He once argued in favor of a life sentence for Brown. However, during Cyntoia’s July hearing, Shipp argued for her release....

Nightline reports that a sequel to the documentary, Me Facing Life: Cyntoia’s story, will be released later this year, focusing on Brown’s journey to clemency and the need for change in juvenile sentencing...."

Sentenced to life in prison at 16, Cyntoia Brown will walk free next week. Here's how it happened.

July 30, 2019

"Cyntoia Brown will leave the Tennessee Prison for Women next week after serving 15 years of a life sentence for the 2004 murder of a Nashville real estate agent.

She was 16 at the time of her crime. Earlier this year, former Gov. Bill Haslam took the rare step of commuting her sentence, paving the way for her Aug. 7 release.

Brown is now a 31-year-old woman who has been institutionalized for more than half her life. Before she shot a stranger who picked her up at an east Nashville fast food restaurant one warm August evening, she spent two years in facilities operated by the Tennessee Department of Children's Services...

Next week, Brown will finally have the chance to decide how to tell her own story, on her own terms....

Kate Watkins, Brown's college teacher and executive director of Lipscomb University's LIFE program, which brings college courses to women in prison, said Brown's upcoming release made her "thankful and grateful that this story is not going to be wasted, that this young, brave, passionate woman would take this pain and use it for the good of others."

It makes me so hopeful," she said "I am so confident in her, absolutely confident."

Brown is not entirely a free woman. Under the terms of her release, she will report to a parole officer regularly for the next ten years. She must hold down a job, perform community service and participate in counseling. ..."

Former prosecutor speaks about unexpected friendship with Cyntoia Brown

Jul 30, 2019

"NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) - An unexpected friendship formed between a former prosecutor and the woman he fought to keep behind bars.

"It really feels like a gift because it was unexpected. It’s not anything I could have anticipated or arranged," Preston Shipp, a former prosecutor said.

Shipp worked as a prosecutor handling appeals for the Tennessee Attorney General's Office in 2008. He defended the state's position of upholding Cyntoia Brown's conviction....

“Getting to know her, you really can’t help but support her. She’d got all the potential in the world to go impact people and mentor," Shipp said.

Shipp doesn't have any hesitation in saying Brown is ready for the real world. He spoke up at her parole hearing and wrote a letter to Haslam supporting her release...."

Cyntoia Brown released from prison after 15 years of life sentence served

Brown will remain on parole supervision, on the condition she does not violate any state or federal laws, holds a job, and participates in regular counseling sessions, per her commutation.

Before her release Wednesday, she met with prison counselors to design a plan for life on the outside, which will include time in a transition center and continuing coursework with the Lipscomb University program, Tennessee's Department of Corrections said.

We'll be hearing more about Ms Brown in the future, I have no doubt.

I hope that you are correct, and that it is a positive outcome. It is so easy to go back to what is easy, and this young woman has many friends from her incarceration who may not be the most empowering people to hang out with.

A colleague of mine had occasion to talk with one of cyntoia’s professors a couple of years ago. He said she is the brightest student he has ever had in his decades long career. I hope she gets the support she needs to successfully transition to the outside and keeps working on her degree.
