Quietly, at the end of last month, Australia became the first country in the world to ban imports of lion trophies from so-called 'canned' hunts. These type of hunts are lucrative ones arranged for tourists in Africa and often involve drugging, baiting and even raising the wild creatures in captivity to make them easy prey for hunters.

Australians are still free to travel and participate in such hunts but can no longer bring back stuffed heads, paws or other trophies from their kills. Environment Minister Greg Hunt (!) made the announcement and minister Jason wood says he hopes the rest of the world will follow suit.

Excellent! This is good news. I would love to hear one day that the hunts themselves are banned.
