Former NSW detectives Roger Rogerson,75 and Glen McNamara, 57 have been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Jamie Gao.

There were gasps and cheers from the public gallery of the NSW Supreme Court at Darlinghurst on Friday as Justice Geoffrey Bellew sentenced Rogerson, 75, and McNamara, 57, for a crime that was 'extensive in its planning, brutal in its execution, and callous in its aftermath'.

In a marathon decision handed down over two and a half hours, Justice Bellew told how the two men had used the skills and knowledge honed over their years as sworn NSW police officers to gain Mr Gao's trust, lure him to a darkened storage shed in the city's south and shoot him dead in May 2014, before attempting to cover their tracks by dumping the 20-year-old's body at sea. -

It is clear that the offenders acted with complete disregard for the life of another human being,' Justice Bellew said.

'The offenders put to use, for all the wrong reasons, knowledge and experience that they gained as a consequence of their investigation of criminal offences when they were members of the police force.'

In addition to the life sentences he imposed, Justice Bellew ordered that both men spend at least nine years behind bars for stealing 2.78 kilograms of methamphetamine with a street value of up to $19 million from Mr Gao.

He added that Rogerson's stated disdain for drug dealers was 'dripping with hypocrisy'.

Both Rogerson and McNamara have flagged possible appeals.

In a statement, Mr Gao's family said the sentence was "the best outcome we, as Jamie's family, could have hoped for".

"To have these two men, who took Jamie from us, sentenced to essentially die in jail, is absolutely fitting," they said.

"The courts can't lessen the term of Jamie's death or the impact that his death, the investigation and ensuing trial has had on our family.

"When it comes to losing a family member you love through murder, there is no real justice."

"We would however like to thank the police, the DPP and the courts for their efforts in putting Jamie's killers behind bars for what we hope is the rest of their lives."

Rogerson was charged over the shooting, along with two criminals Chris “Rent-A-Kill” Flannery and Alan Williams.

Williams pleaded guilty in the NSW Supreme Court to conspiring with Rogerson and Flannery to the attempted murder.

Despite Williams' testimony, Rogerson was acquitted and walked free.

Today, the sentencing of Rogerson – along with another former police officer Glen McNamara – drew a quick response from Mr Drury.

“Today is really the destruction of a myth,” Mr Drury said.

"I find it very telling, I find it extremely sad that not one of them took the opportunity to show remorse about what happened to that boy.

“Don't be seduced by the limps and the swagger, the man [Rogerson] is a brilliant actor, a brilliant pretender and, unfortunately on this occasion for him, a brilliant liar.”

Two ex-cops' murder appeal decision due

Disgraced former detectives Roger Rogerson and Glen McNamara are about to learn the outcome of their appeals over the cold-blooded execution of a Sydney student and drug dealer.

Rogerson, 80, and McNamara, 62, were jailed for life in 2016 after being convicted of murdering Jamie Gao in May 2014.

Both men challenged their convictions and sentences in a lengthy hearing in the NSW Court of Criminal Appeal in September.

NSW Court of Appeal president, Justice Andrew Bell, and Justices Robert Allan Hulme and Robert Beech-Jones are due to hand down their decision on Friday.

Why Rogerson appealed is beyond me. At his age he won't live long enough to benefit from any reduction. The appropriate decision was made, They were guilty beyond any glimmer of doubt. Rogerson has been murdering people for a long time. MOO
