DNA leads to murder arrest 23 yrs later
Advances in DNA profiling helped catch Johanne Hatty's alleged killer more than two decades after she was strangled and raped just 30 metres from her Sydney home, a Sydney court has been told.
The development in DNA technology meant police were able to link swabs taken from the 24-year-old's body following her murder in February 1984 to a sample taken from her alleged killer 20 years later, the NSW Supreme Court heard.
David Graham Fleming, a 54-year-old invalid pensioner, has pleaded not guilty to murdering Miss Hatty near her home in the harbourside suburb of Neutral Bay in the early hours of February 18, 1984.
