GUILTY Australia - Liselotte Watson, 85, murdered in her Macleay Island home, 12 Nov 2012

August 31, 2013

THE man accused of murdering Macleay Island grandmother Liselotte Watson has referred to her brutal death as "the incident last November'' and wants a "large number'' of people to write character references to help him fight the charge in court.

In an email addressed to Steven Fennell's friends and contacts, sent by his wife Helen from her husband's account, the couple ask for letters of support from people who believe in his innocence.

I hope this case is water-tight.
Are letters such as the one's Fennell is asking to be written for him admissible in a Court of Law as character references?

The Supreme Court trial has begun for the junk mail delivery man accused of murdering Queensland grandmother Liselotte Watson in her Macleay Island home...

On day one of the Supreme Court trial the jury was shown gruesome images of the head-injuries Mrs Watson sustained...

According to reports, crown prosecutor Glen Cash alleged Mr Fennell killed Mrs Watson in a bid to cover up his financial misdeeds.

In the days leading up to her violent death, Liselotte Watson confided in one of her neighbours on Queensland's Macleay Island...

Days later, the court has heard, Mrs Watson was found dead on the floor of her bedroom after suffering repeated blows to the base of her skull, so forceful they caused bruising on her brain.

Mrs McKie agreed with defence counsel Adrian Richardson's suggestion it had become common knowledge the grandmother kept cash in her house around the time of her death.

The Supreme Court jury today rejected Fennell's defence that there was no direct evidence linking him to the crime, reaching a guilty verdict after deliberating for almost two days.

"Mrs Watson had placed her trust in you," Justice Martin Daubney said in sentencing. "It is bad enough that, as appears to have been the case, you were betraying her trust by using her money to fund your gambling habit, but to have killed her in such a cruel and callous way bespeaks a base wickedness which is fully deserving of the sentence I am about to impose.

"I sentence you to life imprisonment."
