Police have named the woman found dead in bushland in Sydney’s south as 33-year-old Najma Carroll.

Her body was found partially clothed at 5.15pm on Wednesday near Sandy Point Quarry off Heathcote Road, Menai.

Police believe attempts had been made to set the body alight.

She was found with head injuries and police are trying to determine whether she was killed at the scene or if she suffered the fatal injuries elsewhere and she was dumped near the quarry.

It is understood police believe injuries to her body are consistent with a murder.

Early examinations from police also indicate attempts had been made to set the body alight.

A member of the public made the grim discovery on Wednesday evening.

Officers from Sutherland Shire Police Area Command established a crime scene, which is continuing to be examined by specialist forensic police today.

Najma Carroll, 33-years-old

The 33-year-old was most recently known to live in Sydney's inner west.
Ms Carroll's body was found by a member of the public in scrub near Sandy Point Quarry in Menai, just before 6pm yesterday.

Investigators would like to speak to anyone with information about her movements in recent days or anyone who may have frequented the area off Heathcote Road, locally known as "white rock".

And quite an informative article here -

The 33-year-old's body was found badly burnt off a walking track about a kilometre from Heathcote Road at Menai yesterday afternoon.

A man was walking along a trail at Sandy Point Quarry when his dog led him into the bush and made the grim discovery.

Najma Carroll used to live in Marrickville, but frequented Sydney's south-west....

"It's an isolated area so the fact that the body was found in an isolated area would indicate that the offender or offenders didn't want the body found," Detective Chief Inspector Patton said.

Detective Chief Inspector Steve Patton appealed to anyone with information that could help catch her killer or killers to contact police.

The body of a 33-year-old woman has been found in bushland in Sydney's south with burn injuries, about 800 metres from the road.

NSW Police Sutherland Shire Police Area Commander acting Superintendent Steve Patton said there were signs of a fire near the scene and some burn injuries to Ms Carroll's body.

"It's an isolated area, so the fact that the body was located in an isolated area would indicate that the offender or the offenders, for that matter, didn't want the body found swiftly," he said.

Ms Carroll had not been reported missing before her death.

She was known to frequent areas in Sydney's south-west, in particular the Liverpool area

The area was known to locals as "White Rock" and was used by four-wheel drive enthusiasts, motorbike riders and bushwalkers.

Ms Carroll had been in contact with her family sporadically.

The homicide squad has now been called in to help investigate the circumstances surrounding the death, with specialist forensic police continuing to comb through the crime scene today.

“Local detectives, assisted by the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad, have commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death,” NSW Police said.

A crime scene has been set up which will continue to be examined by specialist forensic police today.

Anyone with information about the young woman’s movements in recent days or anyone who may have frequented the area off Heathcote Road, locally known as ‘white rock’, recently and may have seen anything suspicious, is being urged to contact police.

Police believe the body of a 33-year-old woman found in bushland in Sydney’s south had been burned by offenders trying to conceal the crime.

Acting Superintendent Steve Patton told reporters the woman’s death was suspicious, and confirmed a fire had been lit at the site of the body, he said the fire had caused “some burn injuries to the body”, but said it was too early to confirm the nature of any other injuries Ms Carroll sustained.

Let's hope they find the offender soon. It's bad enough to murder and dump a body but to try and set her on fire is a special kind of psycho.
Agree..... sometimes I wonder what us wrong with people these days??
And so many young women seem to be losing their life in these types of crimes lately....

Paraphrasing here.... a little more personal information to get to know this poor victim a little better....

Police have said the former Sydney Girls High School student was usually in contact with her family, though she had not been reported missing in recent days or weeks.

The Telegraph reports that Board of Studies records reveal Ms Carroll was a talented student at Sydney Girls High School in 2004, achieving top marks in her HSC for English Extension and Modern History.

A caravan business owner Ian Clare said he and his girlfriend met Ms Carroll in Coonamble three years ago and brought her back to Sydney where she lived with them for three months before moving on.

“We’ve still got her dog ... (she was) a very unsettled girl, very emotionally disturbed,” Mr Clare said.

“She was nice and compassionate, I don’t think she let a lot of people get close to her through feelings.

Mr Clare said he had last seen Ms Carroll about a month ago when she returned to his Liverpool home to collect some belongings in a new car she had recently purchased.

“Last we spoke to her she was living around the Marrickville area on people’s couches … she was basically living the rough life, basically homeless, no steady home,” he said.

He revealed that in a recent Facebook message from June 28 she asked about her dog, Chucky.

“(I wanted to see the dog) because things haven’t been easy lately and some unconditional love from a being that isn’t ego driven and doesn’t confuse love with something that hurts,” she wrote.

Nothing has been mentioned by the Police about finding her car at the scene????..... lets hope they can find some evidence when they do find it....

She posted on FB on June 28 ... (For a timeline, if we end up with one) about her dog 'Chucky"

It seems so sad .. like at this point in her life, she was a lost soul .... and she didn't get the chance to "live her best life"....

Also from the previous article, Police are yet to determine how long Ms Carroll’s body had been there due to recent heavy rain and difficult terrain near the sandstone rock quarry.

It is also not yet clear if she was killed at the scene, or if she suffered the fatal injuries elsewhere and was dumped near the quarry. (So far, there have been mentions of head injuries)

Police have also stated that Najma's body was found only partially clothed.

It sounds horrendous.....

Najma was a former student at prestigious Sydney Girls High School.
Najma Carroll's Facebook page says she attended the selective high school for academically gifted students.

The 2004 Higher School Certificate distinguished achiever's list mentions Najma Frances Carroll as receiving the top band in two subjects.

Najma Carroll is also listed on LinkedIn as a University of Sydney student.
