The health of the nine-month-old baby who was stabbed in the Bondi Junction attack on Saturday has improved again, with her condition upgraded to stable at Sydney Children's Hospital this afternoon.

NSW Health officials made the announcement this afternoon, after the child had previously been in a serious but stable condition.

The head of Australia's peak mental health body has resigned over what he labelled government inaction following decades of underfunding and inattention.

This comes a little more than a week after a 40-year-old man with mental health problems attacked shoppers in Sydney killing six people, mostly women, with some critics saying the man fell between gaps in the system.

In some good news surrounding this horrific case, the young Sydney man who was incorrectly named as the Bondi Junction offender by a tv network has reached a settlement with the network. To my knowledge, it hasn’t been publicly reported how much he will receive in compensation

Elizabeth Young, writing in The Sydney Morning Herald on Wednesday, said it was “shameful” how her family found out about Jade’s death.

“Members of my family recognised Jade and her husband Noel in uncensored vision being played on a mainstream TV news feed, with vision of Jade lying on the ground at the shopping centre, receiving CPR,” she wrote.

“The vision, shared on social media and picked up — and used by — multiple news media programs shared my daughter’s final moments with millions. Finding out that a loved one has been murdered is a horror that I do not wish on anyone. But seeing the vision of their last moments and knowing it has been broadcast to millions of people is an appalling breach of privacy and an insult to human dignity.”

Finding the right drug regime is so hard. It took about a year to get right. I take only two meds- I'm open about it in a setting, like here, where people have had grace and courtesy. I was on lithium and endep, nil side effects except weight gain- even with balanced diet and exercise. I found in my bipolar support group that another drug was effective for migraines too. I don't get side effects from either medication, very pleased.
However, I'm lucky, with Bipolar 2, I don't hear voices or get psychosis, but certainly impaired thinking and I made decisions which were not good. At the time of diagnosis, I had also had a PRN or as needed seroquel- for panic attacks or sometimes I'd be unable to control an emotion, ugh don't miss that, but would absolutely knock me out. I don't use it, but for people who do- I can see why the turn to illicit drugs. There are other medications that have significant side effects- the injections and tablets- significant weight gain (which can lead to other co-morbid conditions), and excessive drowsiness.
I note that the perpetrator was incredibly thin, so I'm curious to see his toxicology.
The coroner will have recommendations, one or two of which will be about mental health.
The lingering question(s) that has come up in this thread is the use of compliance and non-compliance.
This is the most difficult and ethical issue. How can this have been prevented? Why did so many people die because of one man? What is the precedence of previous rampage killings in Australia where mental health was the causation? (I actually didn't find that many studies).
Lastly, the coroner will also enlist an independent panel of experts who will also have an opinion. The hearing is going to take a sig amount time to prepare for and take months to investigate.
A 40 year study of homicide by people with schizophrenia was done by researchers from Macquarie uni but on the Russian Federation. (3.0%).

I appreciate that the media were merely reporting on an unfolding extremely tragic incident, but I think it is appalling and a poor error of judgment that the news broadcast showed Jade an innocent victim, who had been violently attacked, receiving CPR. The camera person and crew or a producer or news editor back at the news station should have realized that they needed to change the camera shot immediately because it was not appropriate, acceptable or justified for them to show viewers such a distressing scene. It is important for the news channels to cover senseless tragedies, but they should always try their best to respect the privacy of victims and treat them with compassion and dignity. Yes, it is important for them to show what is happening, but not at the expense of causing the victims and their loved ones significant distress.

I completely understand how Jade’s family feel about the footage of her that was broadcast by the news channel and why they have spoken out about it. News channels need to be aware that everything they broadcast can be posted online on social media etc. in just a few clicks. Any distressing images and videos of victims that they show on air will unfortunately remain online indefinitely, making the heartbreak and devastation of victims and their loved ones even worse. It is horrifying to think of people posting, retweeting and ‘liking’ photos and videos of your loved one who had been murdered on Twitter.

My thoughts and prayers continue to be with all the victims' families who lost a loved one, all the victims who survived, all the people who were in the shopping center during the tragedy and all the law enforcement/medical personnel who attended to the victims and witnessed the crime scene.
