On Monday Stephen Neil White came before the WA Supreme Court, where it was determined he could be released after nearly 22 years behind bars.

White had been subject to a continuing detention order due to his extensive history of violence, including a harrowing attack on a five-year-old girl during a family camping trip in 2001.

The state did not ask the court to impose a continuing detention order and contended that a supervision order with strict conditions would be adequate.

Little girl lost: Surviving the WA crime that barely made the news

The young girl was bleeding and on the brink of death when she was dumped on the doorstep of a Kununurra hospital in 2001.The story of her heinous rape and attempted murder at the hands of a blow-in to the town was largely untold, save for a few lines in the local paper. Until now.

This article is an excellent deep coverage of the crimes he went to prison for. (It's not new, but it is fairly recent - it was published in 2019.) They don't shy away from the brutality of the crimes, but don't relay them with any breathless relish, either. The victims are shielded by pseudonyms.
