AZ - Yarnell Hill fire: 19 Firefighters killed

Half the town of Yarnell has been wiped out.

This is the hottest week of the year so far.
The last tragedy like this in Arizona was 6 firefighters on the hottest week of the year in the 90's.
14 firefighters were killed in Colorado last year.

They were killed in a back burn... they deployed their emergency shelters.
Likely either they were surrounded or trapped.

These emergency shelters will protect you if a fire flashes over you...
But not if a fire sits on top of you.

The feds are taking over tomorrow.

@NewsCarolyn thanks. man its not easy to report this news.

Local Sheriff is devastated... believes he knows some of the firefighters killed.
Sheriff's department has completed evacuations... and will continue road blocks through the night.
Yarnell Fire Dept has an excellent website with 24 hour information.

Oh my dear Holy Sweet Lord. I have no words. None.

Lots of wordless prayers for peace, for succor, for the help that is promised us in this time of horror.

The 20th firefighter was taken out by another ground crew... they don't know how he survived to escape.
It sounds like all 19 were from the Prescott area.
2 Type 1 teams are en route.... probably another 400 firefighters.

250 structures lost in Yarnell but none so far in Peeples Valley, firefighters saved those homes.

Troy Hayden ‏@troyhaydenfox10 7m Average age of hot shot crew killed in Yarnell wildfire just 22. Many the children of Prescott firefighters trying to get experience. #fox10
(that's what I heard, all young college age, 8 to ten were employed ff)

Live news. I have to go see how the local fire is. I have a friend very close to there. We are emailing.

You wouldn't believe how fast this fire happened. Next you know, these brave men died. The surviving ff was said to have burns on 75% of his body. My thoughts are with him & prayers. 250 homes out of 500 gone in no time. Next I know, there's tweets about Mt. Lemmon with possible fire, and sure enough, we could see smoke.

Timber box here.

I was going to ask if you were okay Dr Know... and if all our other members are okay. :seeya:
75% of his body doesn't give him a lot of chance of survival.
But it does happen!

Stephanie Nielson was burned over 80% of her body and survived.

It was a 15 acre fire, 24 hours ago. Now more than 2,000 acres.
Reporters earlier today drove through Yarnell (which is now half gone) to get there to cover it.

Gotta go. Wish someone would bring all the info over. It's being repeated.

Sorry Dr Know... the mods for this forum are not online right now.

RIP Christopher Mackenzie. His father called newsroom to tell us about his son's death w/ Granite Mountain Hotshots

They are en route to the location to deliver "19 line of duty death checks for $15,000 each."

It appears that these firefighters were holding the line when this occurred.
They were trying to protect houses... and likely the winds just changed too fast.

Local Mt. Lemmon Fire. I'll start a new thread if this fire isn't out soon. Sorry to cross this horrible loss of good people and lives with my local news but heard about both about the same time. It happens often when the weather is so hot and dry. We had about ten drops of rain as this storm blew through Tucson. Then the sad news of the Yarnell Firefighters. The storm was moving through to Tucson from Vail at 25 mph, with gusts up to 60 mph. After it gets out of Tucson, it's a free flowing wind all the way up north. Haboobs (dust storms) are common. This packed lightening.

No worry Mrs. F, I am just watching too many fires and these 19 people who died so quickly have thrown me.

These fires can grow terribly huge and last so long. We've been through watching our mountain burn quite a few times over the years. Nothing like the Aspen Fire though. I won't live to see it replenish itself to what it once was. Bummer.
