A very quick map, can add more details later. (just watching the footy)

Just studying the map. I thought Ragged Point would be closer to Big Sur. So who saw them at Ragged point? Now I'm wondering if they even made it to Big Sur.

Can you add North Hollywood as where they are from? and I also found this:
Back in Los Angeles, Guzman says a tip came in that a couple matching the descriptions of the couple was spotted at a Rite Aid in North Hollywood, but so far there have been no leads on that.
http://www.ksby.com/story/34157507/...-on-central-coast-in-search-of-missing-couple
Unfortunately, there are multiple North Hollywood Rite Aids and it is not confirmed it was them.

Here are some random thoughts from me... I used to live in the Santa Cruz Mountains and know a little bit about Monterey County. Not a lot, a little. There are many unknowns including where were they going and did they ever get there. Big Sur is a place but it also refers to the Big Sur Section of the Coast of California. This section includes several State Parks and a National Forest. His mom said he took a backpack, blanket, and a tent. Did she take camping gear? Where does he eat when he camps? Did they take groceries? Camping options are somewhat limited and I think the two large dogs would make them memorable where ever they went. Maybe they traveled through Big Sur and continued up the coast to do some sight seeing. I hope so...

Fernandez’s mother, Rosa Fernandez, 66, said on Friday her son lives with her in her North Hollywood home. She said her last conversation with Fernandez was at 7 a.m. Dec. 23, and he told her he was going camping, which was not unusual.

“He loves to do that,” his mother said, adding he took with him a backpack, blanket and a tent for the trip.

I was shocked at the driving time estimates from Google. Much faster that I expected. The driving time estimates below are for ideal traffic conditions... no traffic.

It's a 1 hour and 48 minute drive from Cambria to Big Sur.

Thank you for this info. When I looked up Ragged Point I saw that it is considered part of "Big Sur" and it seems to be a popular tourist destination all on it's own.
Example, Trip Advisor calls it a "thing to do in Big Sur" (lots of gorgeous pictures at link): https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attract...-Reviews-Ragged_Point-Big_Sur_California.html
The Ragged Point Inn also calls itself "The Gateway to Big Sur": http://www.raggedpointinn.com/

It helps tremendously to know that people call that whole area of the California coast "Big Sur"--I'm not from California so I had no idea.

I wonder if they could have ONLY gone as far as Ragged Point, since that is where they were seen?
I wonder if we can we find any previous trips to Big Sur in their social media photos and figure out where they liked to camp or hike on previous trips? Has anyone found Instagram accounts or other social media besides fb?

Gonzalez’s sister Vanessa Guzman told KTLA-TV that her husband had received a text from the missing woman the day the couple left saying they were two hours away from Big Sur. Their phones were turned off or went dead soon after.

“She’s never without her phone,” Guzman told KEYT-TV. “The most she’s not contacted me is one or two hours sometimes, but not to totally turn off her phone and totally disregard anyone’s calls or messages, so this is definitely out of the ordinary for her.”

Bolded for focus.
I just noticed the last text was to her sister's husband. Does that strike anyone else as odd? The sister was concerned because Olivia left for this trip the day after Olivia told her sister she was planning on breaking up with Brian. I wonder if the brother-in-law did not know this info and that is why the text was sent to him instead of directly to her sister?

Im thinking tht is what happened :(

I'm from the Los Angeles area, and it rained hard that day all along the California coast, 12/23. I go camping alot and have a Subaru Crosstrek with AWD and all season tires. I really doubt they were prepared for rain in a honda civic and probably summer tires on that windy road to Big Sur with cliff drops into the rock outcrops in certain areas. I'm a cautious driver, but would not consider going on that drive in my subaru in the rain. I hope they're okay and not stuck in a car wreck.

When I got my new car last year the dealer told me to take it for a drive with lots of hills during the first 300 miles. We took a drive out to big sur. Lots of hills and twists and turns!! Definitely did not have cell service much of the drive - could be why they aren't reachable.

here are some 'virtual tours' of the windy roads in the Big Sur area.

"You May Find the Road Frightening
Highway 1 is a narrow, twisty, two-lane road, which in places has huge drop offs on the ocean side of the road..."

"
Yep. When you're driving on the 1, you'll encounter twisty roads for an hour or more. It could be quite treacherous as it's right on the cliffs..."

Been on that road. It's beautiful but hair raising to drive. Particularly the long narrow bridges.

It's confusing. Were they in Cambria before or after Big Sur?

Where do they actually live?

They live in North Hollywood. Apparently, they stopped at Cambria General Store on the way to Big Sur.

If I remember correctly, when you're driving down Hwy 1, you're on the road, 2 way, with the mountain on one side
of you and the guard rail on the other, and then there's that DROP down to the sand/rocks/ocean.

So I can imagine it may have been a bit treacherous if the rain was falling, and windey wet roads.
Check the cliffs,guard rails.

They had a rocky relationship and she was going to break it off with him?Well that may change things a bit, maybe not a car accident.

Welcome to Websleuths ecomango!

This part of article bothers me too.

“Her phone went off around 4 p.m.,” Guzman explained.

Does that mean her phone was shutoff at around 4pm?

It doesn't sound good :(

Below are some specific times:
Guzman told KTLA that her husband, Brian, received a text from her sister 'saying they were two hours away from Big Sur at 1pm'.

'And then after that her phone went off at 4pm... and we haven't been able to reach them since,' she added.

I'm trying to find what time the cc transaction at Cambria took place and when they were seen at Ragged Point.

Possibly and I first thought they have had an accident but if her phone was shutoff on the day they went missing makes me worry that it may be something more sinister.

He has to know by now the families are worried sick about them both yet supposedly he logged into FB but has not directly contacted anyone. I sure hope and pray it is an accident and they will be found save soon but something tells me he may be on the lam and she has met with foul play.

IMO

I just found where the Ragged Point info came from:
Guzman traveled from Los Angeles to Cambria Friday-- handing out flyers. A lady in Cambria reported seeing them at Ragged Point.
http://www.ksby.com/story/34160491/plane-searches-for-missing-couples-car-off-the-central-coast

So it's a possible sighting but probably not confirmed. The Cambria stop is the last confirmed location for them since they used a debit card there. Hopefully there is video to back up that it was them at the store...

Have they sent helicopters out to search for wreckage?

This info conflicts with the 1 PM report:
Guzman, 32, said the last time she heard from her sister Olivia was at 10:30 a.m. on Dec. 23.

“I asked her if she was going with me to our family for the Christmas holiday,” said Guzman, who added her sister lives with her. “She informed me she was going to Big Sur.”
The last text message anyone received from Gonzalez was a message she sent to Guzman’s husband at 11:40 a.m. saying she was two hours away from Big Sur.

“Her phone went off around 4 p.m.,” Guzman explained.

I'm guessing the 11:40 AM is the correct time since it is more specific.
