Law enforcement officials say they have new locations to comb for clues in the search for Erin Corwin, a pregnant Marine wife who vanished three weeks ago near the southern California desert Marine base of Twentynine Palms.

San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department deputies already have searched broad swathes of open desert, several homes, a Yucca Valley horse farm and at least four cars in the ongoing investigation.

Warrant: Evidence of murder in disappearance of Marine wife

Homicide investigators believe a pregnant, missing Marine wife may have been shot while on a hunting trip in the desert, according to a search warrant affidavit obtained from the Joshua Tree court on Monday by CBS News 8.

The records lay out a criminal investigation in the case of Erin Corwin, 20, who disappeared June 28 after telling her husband she was going to Joshua Tree National Park.

Neighbor allegedly said body of Marine's missing wife won't be found

The wife of a man who is suspected of having an affair with the missing pregnant wife of a U.S. Marine allegedly told a witness "detectives would never find her body," according to a search warrant made public this week.

The wife of Christopher Lee told the witness, Isabella Megli of Yucca Valley, who was subsequently interviewed by detectives, that without 19-year-old Erin Corwin's body, investigators "did not have a case against them," according to a search warrant issued July 8 in San Bernardino County Superior Court.

The family and friends of missing Marine wife Erin Corwin have launched an online fundraising campaign in an effort to assist the ongoing search by raising enough money for a cash reward.

Over the past two weeks, this campaign has raised about $2,800, mostly through small donations.

Erin Corwin friend: Police 'put a spin' on her remarks

A High Desert woman who was questioned as part of the search for a missing Marine wife has insisted that detectives exaggerated her statements in court documents, twisting her words to shift suspicion onto the neighbors of the missing woman.

Isabel Megli, owner of the White Rock Horse Rescue Ranch in Yucca Valley, said Friday that she never told detectives that Nichole Lee said police had "missed something" when they searched her garage. Megli said several other statements attributed to her by detectives were taken out of context.

Body found, arrest made in case of missing Marine wife
August 18, 2014, 3:44 PM

TWENTYNINE PALMS, Calif. - The body of Erin Corwin, the missing wife of a U.S. Marine, was found in a mine shaft in California over the weekend and a recently discharged marine whom she was said to be having an affair with was arrested on suspicion of homicide, authorities say.

Christopher Brandon Lee, 24, was arrested in Alaska at 9 p.m. Sunday on an extradition warrant out of California, where San Bernardino County authorities want him for homicide, said Jennifer Castro, a spokesman for the Anchorage Police Department.

Corwin, 20, was reportedly about three weeks pregnant when she disappeared June 28 from her Twentynine Palms, California, home. Her husband, Marine Cpl. Jonathan Corwin, reported her missing the next day.
The 20-year-old's body was found Saturday in a mine shaft several miles away from her home, authorities said Monday.

Body of Erin Corwin found; suspected lover arrested

Corwin's family released a statement to 10News, saying:

The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department confirmed to us early Monday, August 18th that Erin's body has been found. While we were praying for a different outcome, we cannot begin to express the gratitude we have for every person that has been involved in the search for Erin. The countless hours that have been spent by volunteer search crews and multiple branches of law enforcement, especially the Specialized Investigations Division Homicide Detail, are more than we could have asked for and are ultimately what have led to finding her. While we are relieved to have closure, we ask that our privacy be respected over the next few weeks so that we can properly grieve and mourn the loss of our sweet girl. Please continue to pray for our family and for justice for Erin. Thank you all for your continued support, the families of Erin and Jonathan Corwin

Erin Corwin body found; Christopher Lee arrested

Authorities have also said that Lee's wife, Nichole Lee, is a "person of interest" in the death.

Corwin's body was located Saturday afternoon by specialized mine search teams, who used cameras to explore more than 100 mine shafts and bodies of water in the remote desert. An urban search and rescue team recovered the body on Sunday, and dental records were used to ensure it was Corwin.

During the seven-week search that followed, law enforcement officials and volunteers inspected more than 300 squares miles of desert and several bodies of water.

During a press conference on Monday, sheriff's Sgt. Travis Newport said volunteers were critical in the massive search. Nearly 5,000 volunteer hours were dedicated to the search.

On the day Corwin was found, search teams were focused on the areas of the Rose of Peru Mining District, Brooklyn Mining District and Los Angeles Mining District. Authorities said the area was remote, rough terrain — difficult for even a four-wheel vehicle to traverse — speckled with dangerous mine shafts.

Body of Marine's missing wife found in mine shaft
August 19, 2014

The search finally ended Saturday when a body was spotted with a video camera 140 feet down a mine shaft on federal land near Twentynine Palms, where she had been living.

In a little more than 24 hours, authorities had recovered and identified the remains of Erin Corwin and arrested her former neighbor and alleged lover, 24-year-old former Marine Christopher Brandon Lee, in Anchorage, Alaska, on suspicion of homicide.

"The manner of death has been determined to be homicide," San Bernardino County Sheriff John McMahon said Monday, adding that deputies searched many of the 100 mine shafts in a 300 square mile area before zeroing in on the one that contained Corwin.

snip

Other evidence was found in the shaft — one of more than 100 in the area — but sheriff's officials declined to give details.

Authorities also declined to release the exact manner of death and said they could not confirm Corwin's pregnancy until an autopsy was completed.

Corwin would have been 20 if alive, but authorities say she likely died before her birthday.

"Let's just wait until the facts come out before jumping to conclusions," Bob Lee, Christopher's father, told an Associated Press reporter during a brief interview outside the family's home in a working class neighborhood in Anchorage. He said the arrest came as his son and daughter-in-law, Nichole Lee, were returning home.

CBS News 8 has learned has learned Lee may have had an incriminating internet search history on his computer, which is what may have led investigators to zero in on the hundreds of mine shafts around Joshua Tree National Park.
"We were able to determine a potential location of Erin Corwin's body," Newport said.

Prosecutor: Former Marine Murdered Comrade's Wife
POSTED: 03:36 PM AKDT Aug 19, 2014

Christopher Brandon Lee was arraigned in Anchorage Jail Court Tuesday afternoon, after being arrested by Anchorage police on a California homicide warrant Sunday night. He did not waive his right to an extradition hearing, a move hoped for by law enforcement officers in California.

In another point of contention with prosecutors, Lee asked to speak with his attorney, despite the prosecution's claim that he didn't have one. A discussion in court revealed that the attorney is based in California and can't practice law in Alaska, leading to the scheduling of an Alaska representation hearing for Lee.

Suspect in murder of Marine wife in California appears in Anchorage court
August 19, 2014

The state has charged Christopher Brandon Lee, 24, for being a fugitive from justice. Assistant District Attorney Heather Nobrega requested bail be set at $2 million “cash only,” which the court granted.

snip

A California Superior Court issued two arrest warrants for Lee. One set Lee’s bail at $2 million; the other had a no bail condition. Alaska requires setting bail and adheres to the amount decided by the Outside court, Nobrega said.

snip

Lee appeared for his hearing wearing red prison clothing, instead of the yellow that most Anchorage jail inmates wear. The difference typically indicates that inmate is segregated from the general population.

A look at the mine shaft where Marine wife's body was dumped

YouTube video posted by the Southern California Off Road Explorers shows the Rose of Peru Mine in 2012 near Joshua Tree National Park. Even with a closer look down, all you see is a black hole. At the bottom, 140 down under the ground, is where investigators found Corwin's body along with .22 caliber cartridge casings and rebar that detectives say match what was found in her alleged ex-lover Christopher Lee's Jeep Cherokee and home.

Desert mines made for tough Erin Corwin search

roseofperumine.jpg

Erin Corwin's body was found 140 feet down an old gold mine shaft in the remote creosote-dotted wilderness just north of the Joshua Tree National Park boundary. But the spot where her body landed — equivalent to about a 14-floor fall — was far from the very bottom of the Rose of Peru mine, which is estimated to be at least 250 feet deep.

snip

Martinez said Corwin's body was discovered on a "false floor" in the mine shaft, where debris collects in one area and blocks the rest of the passage to the bottom of the mine.

"Miss Corwin's body landed on that debris field," she said, adding that Corwin's body could have fallen much further. "We couldn't even see how deep it went."

Erin Corwin: Christopher Lee's legal tangle
August 22, 2014

But several readers have questioned who actually has jurisdiction in the case because of a couple of complicating factors: Corwin's body was found in a mine shaft on federal land owned by the Bureau of Land Management and, if Corwin was killed shortly after her disappearance the crime would have been committed while Lee was still an active duty Marine. He didn't receive his honorable discharge until July 7.
