MASSIVE HIGH-TECH EFFORT BY `FRIENDS OF JIM' REVEALS NO FRESH CLUES

By Truong Phuoc Khánh

Mercury News

Three weeks after Jim Gray, a renowned and beloved computer scientist, sailed out of San Francisco and vanished, a happy ending would have been miraculous.
But Friday, the Friends of Jim -- a group of computer gurus who marshaled their high-tech know-how to conduct a vast hunt for Gray's red-hulled yacht -- conceded there was nowhere left to search.

``We have no evidence as to what has happened to Tenacious or to Jim Gray,'' Mike Olson, a spokesman for the search team, posted on the Friends of Jim blog. ``Based on our knowledge of the boat and weather conditions, we do not believe that Tenacious could have out-sailed our search. . . . We have covered an enormous area.''

body found????

SAN FRANCISCO -- After an exhaustive search involving the U.S. Coast Guard and the Mexican Navy and an online effort to view hundreds of satellite photos, friends of a missing San Francisco sailor have called off their search.

Meanwhile, the Marin County coroner confirmed on Saturday that an unidentified body had been found off Point Bonita. Authorities released little information about the recovered body only that it was found off the Marin Coast at 1 p.m. Friday.

Does anyone think Mr. Gray may have wanted to retreat from society on his own? Seems strange he just disappeared off the face of the earth. No signs of his boat anywhere.

Greta Van Susteran's "On The Record" program mentioned him tonight. New information. She's a big tease though, so we'll see what that info is....

Hull in boat might have been weakened by previous leak 10 yrs ago in boat. Or container boat might have hit Gray's boat.

A reporter from Wired magazine is saying this. He has written a comprehensive article (s?) about the missing man.

I looked for gray on mechanical turk for hours.

I'm certain he's lost at sea. Simplest explanation usually correct.

Wonder if he's on an island somewhere...I realize this is a long shot..but currents can be wicked. Have they checked any?
