" SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY, Calif. — The San Joaquin County sheriff is fulfilling a campaign promise with the announcement of a new, dedicated cold case unit aimed at solving crimes dating as far back as 1964.
"If it was my husband or wife or child, I would want to know there was someone working and would not rest until I had closure," said San Joaquin County Sheriff Patrick Withrow at a Wednesday morning news conference.
The new unit, which includes a detective sergeant and a detective, has already cataloged 1,100 pieces of evidence linked to approximately 200 unsolved homicides and another 150 missing persons and sexual assault cases.
Some of that evidence could potentially be linked to Wesley Shermantine, Withrow said.
Shermantine and Loren Herzog, dubbed the "Speed Freak Killers," were jointly convicted in three murders.
They are suspected of killing many others during the 1980s and 1990s.
"We know Wesley Shermantine has bragged about killing hundreds and over state lines," Withrow said.
The new unit is currently working on an enhanced website to work more closely with victims' loved ones and to accept tips.
"We are also focused on using rapid DNA to more quickly work these cases," Withrow said.
The San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office said detectives will begin reaching out to victims' families to determine if they are still willing to work with investigators toward solving cold cases.
A cold case is considered an unsolved case that is 5 years old or older, explained the sheriff. "
