Allen urged the jury to find Carla Torres and Alberto Garcia guilty of first-degree murder. She said while only one of them may have inflicted the fatal injuries, the other stood by and allowed it to happen...

Allen said there was one brief moment during Torres’ testimony last week where she displayed honesty. It was after Allen asked Torres if it was true she didn’t like Serenity. Torres didn’t respond by claiming to love the child, or to have even a modicum of affection for her. She said, ”I didn’t dislike her either“...

Defense lawyers will present their closing arguments this afternoon.

A couple who beat a 3-year-old foster child to death and left her body in their southwest Bakersfield home as they fled to Mexico were sentenced Wednesday to life terms in prison.

Judge John R. Brownlee sentenced Carla Torres to 25 years to life in prison plus four years, and Alberto Garcia to 15 years to life plus four years. Neither showed emotion during the proceedings.
