Early Sunday morning, acting on the alert from Modesto police that Martin "Marty" Martinez was headed for a relative's East San Jose home, police discovered his red SUV near Reid-Hillview Airport and began searching for the 30-year-old suspect. About 1 a.m., the tense manhunt ended quietly in the Westfield-Oakridge mall parking lot as Martinez was confronted by police and quickly surrendered.

I wonder if his being eminently charged with the tots murder was motive for the other slayings? Pp

Wait. MM kills Dr. Crews 2 yr old & then she has a child with him. The stories keep getting crazier & crazier. I have a hard time understanding why some women hook up with these creeps, but this is beyond strange.

She was already pregnant with the baby girl when her little son died.

What's the matter with Martinez's ears? Cauliflowered? I wonder if he's a boxer? That certainly could be lethal if used against a 2-year-old.

The other victims were identified as Anna Brown Romero, 57, Elizabeth Ripley, 6, and Elizabeth's 5-year-old friend -- a distant family member -- who was dropped off at Crews' home earlier in the day.

Police said Romero was Martinez's mother.

An arrest warrant was issued early Sunday morning for Martinez, who was then arrested while coming out of a movie with his father in San Jose.

"A forensic analyst looked into the death, and it was determined Christopher died from blunt force trauma, and his death was a homicide. Police investigators were informed Thursday."

"Officers said there was no indication Martinez may do something like this. They said they do not believe Martinez knew the report came out Thursday, very few people knew."

Modesto Police Chief Galen Carroll said Martinez, Crews, Elizabeth and Christopher were living together in a Pasadena Lane home in October and that Martinez was alone with Christopher when the boy was injured. Carroll said Martinez told police he had been wrestling with the boy, who died two days later in a Madera hospital. Child Protective Services at the time ordered him away from Crews' other children.

Where did/do the other two siblings (listed in 2-year-old's obituary) live?

Woodrow: "Chief Carroll, with all due respect, did the police department drop the ball on this one? Mr. Martinez was a suspect in this 2-year-old's death and for nine months he was allowed to still have continued contact with this family and these children. Could all of these individuals' deaths have been prevented?"
Carroll: "Absolutely not. The Modesto Police Department did not drop the ball on this. At that time, there were no indications there would be any violence in that family. There had been no calls for service at that location."

The police chief says Child Protective Services was involved and Martinez wasn't living in house the last two months.

I was sitting on the expected presser site but got only a portion of it LIVE.

You can find the entire press conference here:

From SophieRose's post just above, with my bolding for emphasis:

Carroll: "Absolutely not. The Modesto Police Department did not drop the ball on this. At that time, there were no indications there would be any violence in that family. There had been no calls for service at that location."

IMO, a terribly weak excuse! I could have bolded the entire quote. How pathetic!

RIP to all of the victims...sending condolences and comfort to all of the victim survivors.
