Well said and I agree 100%!

You gave some great examples of how the money could be used. I would also feel more comfortable donating if the family made clear their intentions!

Just something that crossed my mind... maybe they are just to involved in their grief to even think about things like this... I guess time will tell. They may still do something like this with the money in the future, but I do agree the whole money part of this case is very strange and brings up a lot of questions.

You forgot the $100,000 reward they were going to offer as well.

That is another weird thing for this case. The fact that they were going to do the huge reward but LE stopped it. I wonder if LE was feeling unsure of the family's sketchy financial situation. Or why else would they not let them offer an award? I mean Tamra Keepness' reward went up from $25000 to $50000 10 years later.

How many fundraisers are currently in the works for the L and O families?

Some of this seems kinda fishy. I don't know much about bankruptcy but I do know that, with poor choices when we were younger, credit can effect being able to buy houses and such. I have kinda been wondering (since I read the timeline) how they have their Calgary home (which seems to give the air of being well off), a new house in Edmonton, and the property in Mexico (I know that hasn't been confirmed as theirs) but even just to afford to go to Mexico for a short holiday let alone an extended period of time would cost as well. I mean no disrespect to the family but in DG's eyes, this could very well make them seem like they should be able to of compensated for this help on the patent. Even if it was acknowledgement that he was after, he could see them as not giving him what he thinks his help was worth... and fueled the anger.

Also in regards to DG's parents. I was under the impression they were in their 80's. I don't know many, if any, 80 year olds that go camping, especially for any extended amount of time. No matter how fit, involved in the community they may be I think it is strange that they would be camping. (maybe just me but if the RCMP don't even know if they have returned home do they even know where they are?) We have heard nothing about his parents. Does anyone know their names? And as far as comments on them knowing about his criminal activities, such as the meth lab, I believe they were either afraid of him or else they truly didn't know what was going on. I think most parents can be very easily deceived by only seeing what they want to in their children. He sounds like a very smooth talker and would be able to convince them that nothing is wrong, or he is doing nothing wrong and maybe they just believed him. That they were away the last few weeks, they very well could of not had a clue as to what he was up to. I just really find it odd that if they really are camping, why wouldn't they of ended their camping trip early when they heard this was all happening and come home. Would they really just go on with their holidays if they knew the police were raiding their home (a home they have owned for a lot of their life???) It just seems strange in my opinion...

They might be in their 70s - we don't know. Douglas is 54 and he has a sister that is about 8-10 years younger.

In any case, it seems that they were on vacation at the time of the arrest, and they are alive and well being supported by people in their community.

Interesting, something I didn't even think about that was mentioned in the CTV article was that the perp walk could have generated more tips. It was really the first time we saw an accurate image of DG. The trial drawings certainly looked much different IMO and even the one from after we had all seen him. I can imagine that a more accurate depiction would garner more tips. I am fairly certain that a triple murder arrest would be sufficient to sully someone's reputation and the perp walk wouldn't make much of a difference in that regard.

I would gladly support a fundraiser in his name.. .I just don't agree with bankrolling (yes that sounds harsh but I have no other word for it) a family.

Noelle Paquette's family has done a wonderful job of fundraising in her name and creating a legacy for her. Not a dime has gone to the family publicly.

Noelle's gift is her charity.

I wholeheartedly agree with this complaint. I've never seen anything like it before. The suspect is presumed innocent and his rights should be protected. I think it is the media, rather than police, that overstepped the boundaries, but police should have taken additional measures to prevent the media circus that happened in the middle of the night.

I know of two online fundraisers (the main one with ~$40,000 and a newer one for the vacation fund.)

There are also two trust funds that have been set up at banks that I have heard of. There is one trust fund with Alberta Treasury Branch (this was started very early on, maybe three or four days into the disappearance.) There is a second trust fund at CIBC which I believe was set up by KL's friend from Canmore.

I thought that it was disgusting and humiliating. What if they have the wrong guy?

No better than a public execution in my mind. Try and find a jury that did not see that and automatically think he was guilty. I believe it was a miscarriage of justice for what was initially a tight lipped and air tight case being built.

The police chief was very clear in his request. Investigators hadn't even begun the investigation when the family announced that they were going to provide a $100,000 reward for information leading that would help locate their son. They wanted time to do their jobs before they were inundated with tips that could be motivated by money rather than useful information.

There's the online donation site, an Airdrie group is holding a silent auction, and donations can be made at one of the banks.

The only part that I had a problem with was the reporter, otherwise this is what occurs in every other case in Calgary. I'm curious if is was part of a plan to attempt to rattle DG a bit. I think it looked more dramatic due to the walk occurring at night. JMO

Where did you read about a vacation fund?

My thoughts too.
