GUILTY Canada - Connor, 2, & Jayden McConnell, 10 mos, drowned, Millet, AB, 1 Feb 2010

AUSTRALIAN murder accused Allyson McConnell was "a very good mother" to her young sons, but appeared mad and depressed when her marriage deteriorated into a messy divorce, a Canadian court has heard.

Prosecutors said the case would focus on whether McConnell, who is being held on suicide watch in a mental health ward at an Alberta hospital, had the intent required to be convicted of murder.

The trial continues.

Allyson McConnell claims she was under the influence of alcohol and doesn't remember what happened on the weekend 2 years ago. McConnell testified in Court that she took sleeping pills and drank Bacardi Breezers, an alcoholic soda, on Friday night Jan. 29, 2010 in an attempt to commit suicide. She told the court she remembered waking up vomiting with a metallic taste in her mouth.

She also remembers waking up in the bathtub holding electrical appliances. "It was dark," she said. Previous testimony indicated a breaker had tripped.

She told the court, not only can she not recall drowning her sons, but she is still trying to figure out why she did it.

McConnell attempted suicide for the first time after becoming pregnant by her own father at 15, she told the court, adding she subsequently had a miscarriage at 10 weeks and told no one about it.

The defence hopes to establish that McConnell cannot be held legally responsible because she suffered from mental illness and was unable to form the intent to murder.

Allyson's psychiatrist is expected to testify this week followed by McConnell's sister and mother.

Allyson McConnell, Alberta Mother Who Drowned Sons In Bathtub, Sentenced To Six Years For Manslaughter

WETASKIWIN, Alta. - Jim McConnell thinks the lives of his two young grandsons are worth more than the sentence their mother has received for drowning the boys in a bathtub.

His former daughter-in-law, Allyson McConnell, was sentenced Monday to six years in prison. But she faces 15 months in custody because Justice Michelle Crighton gave McConnell double credit for the time she has already spent in a mental hospital. She'll be eligible for early release in 10 months.

You know, I can't help but think the judge would rather not bear the cost of keeping her imprisoned when deportation is an option.

People get depressed, people get divorced, life happens, there is no excuse for killing two babies.

I can hardly believe she only got something like 18 months for each child she murdered. Why? Because she can't remember doing it? How convenient. :furious:

Body under West Gosford bridge believed to be Allyson McConnell who drowned her young sons in Canada in 2010

Police were alerted to the discovery about 11.15am when a member of the public saw the body lying on rocks beneath the Brian McGowan Bridge on Brisbane Water Drive.

The body was found in water near a rail bridge which crosses the bay where Narara Creek empties into The Broadwater. It's a rocky spot commonly used by fishermen.

A crime scene has been established but the death is not considered suspicious.
