As children, Dane and Erin would spend one weekend a year at an uncle's trailer near Huntsville.

"She absolutely loved it up there … I had to always bring a friend to chum around with, but Erin had friends that she made up there, which was incredible. You're only there for one long weekend every year and …"

His mother finished the sentence: "She had a ton of friends."

Erin attended Elmira District Secondary School and worked at the Sip & Bite restaurant in Elmira for seven or eight years.

"She loved the interaction with the people," Dane said. "Erin was there for the social part of it — it just happened to be her job to also bring food."

Dane, a volunteer firefighter with the Township of Wellesley and a fleet maintenance manager with a grain company, said many Sip & Bite customers were devastated by Erin's death.

What happens next is up to the Crown attorney’s office if they decide to reprosecute Ball.

He’ll be sentenced Friday March 11, on the charge of committing an indignity to a dead body.

I'm still shaking my head at this dumb jury. If they don't think Ball killed Erin, then why find him guilty of committing an indignity? Since they believe he committed an indignity, then why wouldn't they follow the logic that he killed her? This makes no sense to me.

I hope they prosecute him again, and I hope a smarter jury is chosen.

Michael Ball will spend one day in prison after being convicted of indignity to a body in relation to the death of Erin Howlett.

Including time served, the 24-year-old will only spend 24 hours behind bars.

Ball’s lawyer had asked for 18 months, while the Crown was asking for a three-five year sentence. He has already served nearly two years.

Michael Ball will try a third time to compel taxpayers to defend him on a murder charge, after two failed requests for public funding...

He's facing a second trial after the jury in his first murder trial didn't reach a murder verdict last March, resulting in a mistrial. The jury convicted him of committing an indignity to her dead body...

Court has banned the publication of evidence heard in Ball's plea for public funding. It lasts until the jury begins deliberations in the second murder trial. No date has been set for that trial.

Ball’s second murder trial set to start next spring

In a Kitchener courtroom on Friday, April 3 was set as the start date and the Crown prosecutor and Ball's defence lawyer suggested the trial could last 12 weeks.

The Crown prosecutor's office said an application for a change of venue has been filed by the defence. It will be heard in October. It could mean the trial will not be held in Kitchener.
