A Community Remembers Maple Batalia

This Friday, September 28, 2012, will mark the one year anniversary of the tragic death of Maple Batalia.

Maple was 19 and studying at the SFU Campus in Surrey when she was shot to death.

“This heinous killing shocked the community and forced a loving family to forever deal with this tragic and unnecessary loss,” says Sgt. Jennifer Pound.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) continues to push forward with this investigation and process information received through the community and various tips that come in.

The community is outraged by the senseless murder of Maple Batalia and those who knew and loved her miss her greatly.

“We know there are people within the community that have not come forward to the police. We want to reach those individuals and ask them to look at the devastation this murder has caused. We want to ask those individuals to do the noble thing and come forward, “ says Sgt. Jennifer Pound.

“Maple’s family, the public and the police want to see justice for this young girl who was beautiful inside and out,” says Sgt. Jennifer Pound.

The family will be holding a vigil in Surrey on September 28, 2012 at Holland Park located at 13428 Old Yale Road.

This vigil is open to the media and will start at 7:00 pm

Twenty-year-old Gurjinder Dhaliwal, known as Gary, was charged with first-degree murder and his 22-year-old associate Gursimar Bedi was charged with manslaughter, using a firearm and being an accessory after the fact.

Fantastic news!
It will not bring lovely Maple back, but this arrest should bring some measure of satisfaction to her friends and family.

Two men have been charged in Batalia’s death. Her ex-boyfriend Gurjinder “Gary” Dhaliwal was charged with first-degree murder, while Gursimar Singh Bedi was charged with manslaughter with a firearm and accessory after the fact.

Dhaliwal remains in custody; Bedi was granted bail in January 2013. The men are expected to stand trial in B.C. Supreme Court in April.

“The family wants closure and justice to be served,” said family friend Rina Gill. “The wounds cannot heal. For them it’s fresh, it doesn’t seem like three years ago.”
