Saretzky, who is wearing a blue prison jumpsuit and now has a beard, hasn't reacted.

Tilleman hopes Saretzky gains some insight and an understanding of the value of human life. He says sentence is not about vengeance.

Was hoping we heard the last of this monster but he is now trying to get an acquittal in Hanne Meketech's murder. Poor thing, thinks his rights were violated.

I don't think the appeal is based on Sarezky's feelings, except of course he and his family wanting to get him out of jail. It's routine after a guilty verdict for a lawyer to appeal if they can find any potential for alleged violations of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The success of some appeals has made big differences in how police must ensure they don't violate an accused rights in any circumstances. Ultimately, I think it creates a better justice system, less likelihood of wrongful convictions or 'making of a murderer' type scenarios, etc.

Cumulative sentencing beyond 25 years was passed by Parliament in 2011 but it’s never been tested by the SCC. I dearly hope that DS’s 75 sentence will stand when his appeal is eventually heard.

“Derek Saretzky was found guilty of first-degree murder in the 2015 deaths of Terry Blachette, the man's two-year-old daughter, Hailey Dunbar-Blanchette, and Hanne Meketech.

He was sentenced to life with no chance at parole for 75 years.

His lawyer, Balfour Der, asked the Alberta Court of Appeal for permission to challenge the constitutionality of consecutive parole ineligibility periods.

The Appeal Court says it will hear the appeal, but only after the Supreme Court decides on the case of Alexandre Bissonnette.

Bissonnette killed six people at a Quebec City mosque in 2017 and was sentenced to life without parole for 40 years but it was later changed on appeal to 25 years.

The Quebec Court of Appeal ruled that the cumulative sentencing provision is unconstitutional….”
