"Meanwhile, crime stats show that sexual offences are on the rise in Vancouver.

Sexual offences have risen from 412 in 2008 to 526 last year.

“The majority of these offences are stranger gropings, and we believe more used to go unreported,” Vancouver police Chief Jim Chu said in a news release"

Looks like alleged perp's hat helped give him away, wonder what and if he was planning on getting up to during his time in Ontario?

" Vancouver police say they were led to 30-year-old Kyle David Grantmyre after an appeal last June for information that could lead to the man involved in two assaults on women in the city's downtown core.

The appeal included information about a baseball hat allegedly dropped by the suspect during the second assault -- which occurred early last May, just hours after the first one -- although both victims fought back and neither was seriously hurt."

"Crime statistics point to an alarming increase in sexual assaults in Vancouver in the past 14 months.

Vancouver police are puzzled by the surge in reported sex offences, Const. Brian Montague said, and unsure if more assaults are occurring or women are increasingly reporting assaults.

In 2003 there were 449 reported sex assaults, according to VPD crime stats, with those figures remaining stable until 2008. Reported sex assaults surged to 511 in 2009, and rose again to 560 in 2010. Reports fell back to about 500 per year for two years, before spiking again at 572 in 2013 — a 16.6-per-cent increase.

And in the first two months of 2014, assault reports have exploded, with 53 in January and 88 in February. If this average increase continued all year, there would be 846 assaults by Dec. 31, 2014.

In an interview, Montague said police speculate that an increase in the reporting of “stranger groping” assaults across the city could account for the rising trend. But often multiple assaults can be connected to prolific offenders, he said, which means actual assaults could be increasing".

Not directed at you but the report. American accent? Unless he's from the south then I honestly don't understand how the accent can be distinguished. In other words I don't believe my accent is any different than someone from Let's say Vermont or New York

With the latest info they've changed it to olive skin, dark skin or tanned. Maybe he's Latin American.

When I go across the border to NY I notice the accent right away. It's subtle but certain words are pronounced differently. Different parts of words are emphasized etc. It's something I pick up every time.

This is how a sex assault at school was handled in Paris.

PARIS -- Male students and staff at a high school in western France -- 527 people in total -- were asked to give DNA samples beginning Monday as police search for the assailant who raped a teenage girl.

The La Rochelle prosecutor's office said tests were expected to last from Monday through Wednesday at Fenelon-Notre Dame high school, where the 16-year-old was sexually assaulted Sept. 30 in a dark bathroom. Police recovered genetic material from the girl's clothing, but it had no matches in the national DNA database".

Yes! When I listen to people from Minnesota or ND speak, I can hear a definite accent. I'm sure it is the same for people in BC when they hear people from Washington or other nearby states talk.

I don't know why, but I had not read about these assaults before. Will have to do some background reading.

Bumping...

"“It’s an investigation that encompasses a large area,” said Thiessen. “There is quite a long list of potential persons of interest. We’ve put every piece of resource that we possible can — and if we need more, we will do that to find this individual. Unfortunately these things take time.”

He would not comment on whether any of the persons of interest attended or worked at UBC. “We’re not making any assumptions on where this individual may live or be every day.”
"
Anyone with information on the suspect or any of the attacks is asked to contact the RCMP's tipline at 778-290-5291 or 1-877-543-4822.

No attacks between May and September suggests that he could be a student who lives somewhere else in the summer.

Keeping that in mind, if indeed poi does have an American accent, perhaps he might be recognized if he returns there during the summer.

This sex assault on a UBC student last month, is not necessarily linked to prior attacks, however, it might have a link to a recent, alleged assault on a train.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/woman-grabbed-from-behind-assaulted-at-ubc-1.2968837

"An 18-year-old woman was assaulted on the UBC campus on Sunday.

University RCMP said she was grabbed from behind by a male stranger around 10:10 p.m. PT while walking near Mundell Park at the south campus.

She struggled and managed to break free. Police were called but they were unable to locate the suspect.

He is described as:

18 to 20 years old.
Olive-coloured skin.
Short, spiky, black hair.
Approximately 5'4" to 5’6”.
Medium build.
Wearing a puffy army green vest, dark long-sleeved shirt, and dark pants".

This is the recent ( and controversial ) details of the alleged assault, which prompted yet another person to report a s. assault..

"Release of alleged B.C. sex assault victim description sparks outrage"

“To put out a description is an indicator to both her and perhaps someone who might know who we're talking about to say to her, perhaps she should go and talk to the police,” she said.

Yu followed the suspect off the train at Bridgeport Station in Richmond after the alleged incident on Thursday morning. She pointed him out to transit police, who stopped him and asked for identification.

But because the victim had not been identified, the suspect was allowed to go.

Shortly after, Transit Police began investigating whether the incident was connected to a sex assault that occurred two weeks ago on the University of British Columbia campus.

Then, after the force's public plea, a victim of a separate but similar assault on Friday morning on the Canada Line came forward. A link has not been proven but officers continue to investigate, Drennan said."

Not necessarily connected, but an arrest made in one alleged train s. assault.

"A German tourist has been charged with sexual assault after allegedly groping a woman on Canada Line during the morning commute yesterday, according to Metro Vancouver Transit Police.

Wolfgang Goffing, 44, was arrested after a woman reported him to a Canada Line attendant at around 9 a.m. PT Monday."
