''VICTORIA - Police in Victoria say they are worried about the welfare of a new mother whose baby was found dead.

Officers and an ambulance were called Wednesday night to a report of a baby found in a parking lot in the city.

Police said Thursday that it’s believed the baby had been recently born, possibly in the area.

A news release from the department said investigators are concerned for the welfare of the mother, who may need medical care and support.

B.C. Children’s Minister Mitzi Dean said the discovery of the deceased child was “a terrible tragedy.”

“It’s a very sad story for a local family. We want all children and youth to be cared for safely and their family, so this is terribly heartbreaking news. My heart goes out to anybody involved with the family,” Dean said in the legislature.

The Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit has taken over the investigation.''

''Officers and an ambulance were called just before 10 p.m. on Wednesday to a report of a baby found in the parking lot of the Blanshard Centre in the 700-block of Bay Street. Police say it’s believed the baby had been recently born, possibly in the area.''

''On Thursday, investigators could be seen outside the shopping plaza’s Subway restaurant, taking photographs around the property. Officers in white coveralls, masks and purple gloves were examining large garbage bins across the parking lot.''

''The Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit has taken over the investigation. No further details were immediately available from police.

A Subway staff member who did not want be named said a passerby found the baby in a shopping bag, and the restaurant was quickly closed down. The spot where the baby was found was cleaned by firefighters Thursday morning.''

''The extent of the police activity was a surprise for Bork.

“I’ve seen police in here, but typically they’re just talking to a single business if something happened there, an altercation,” he said.

“It’s like a ghost town in here. It’s kind of wild.”

Police ask anyone with information to call the Major Crime Unit at 250-380-6211.''
