Cases from 1990-1999

The families of the girls and young women later would learn the fate of their loved ones. Three had been sexually assaulted and all were strangled. On Monday, police charged Anthony Allen Shore with four counts of capital murder in connection with the deaths, the mysteries apparently solved by a Dallas lab the Houston Police Department contracts for evidence testing.

Shore, who has held several jobs over the years, including as a musician playing guitar and keyboard with a band, has had a number of addresses, but has remained in Houston most of his life, Swaim said.

The caller said, correctly, that the dead girl's birthday was May 11 and, incorrectly, that her name was Ruby. However, police said, Sanchez had a friend named Ruby and may have given her abductor that name.

Swaim said police believe Shore made that call.

Sanchez had been sexually assaulted.

The manner of Rebollar's strangulation was identical to that of Estrada, and uncommon enough that police were certain the two were victims of the same killer.

"I wish I could share with you ... what he told us, but it's unspeakable," Swaim said. "What he did is unspeakable.

"The tug of evil and good in this city is alive. Finally, good triumphed."

CHAMBERS COUNTY SHERIFF: LOUISIANA MAN CONFESSES TO KILLING 13-YEAR-OLD TEXAS CITY GIRL 14 YEARS AGO

By SCOTT REESE WILLEY

Hometown Press

A Louisiana man has confessed to killing a 13-year-old Texas City girl 14 years ago, Chambers County Sheriff Joe LaRive announced Thursday.

Kevin Edison Smith, 45, confessed on Oct. 19 to the slaying of Krystal Jean Baker in June 1996, LaRive told the media via email.

A state medical lab has confirmed earlier this month that Smith's DNA matched the DNA found on the dress of Baker, whose body was found beneath a Chambers County bridge in 1996, LaRive reported Friday.

On March 5, 1996, Krystal Jean Baker left her grandmother's house at approximately 1:20 p.m. With no word from her by that evening, her grandmother reported her missing. Two weeks later her body was found under the I-10 bridge over the Trinity River is Texas City. She had been strangled.

DNA linked a Louisiana man, Kevin Edison Smith, 45, to Krystal's murder. He was arrested and charged in September, 2010.

TEXAS CITY — The mother of a girl found slain under a Chambers County bridge in 1996 said Friday a suspect’s arrest and murder charge in the cold case was a miracle.

Kevin Edison Smith, 45, of Louisiana, was arrested Wednesday at his refinery job in Groves on a Chambers County Sheriff’s Office warrant, charging him with murder in the killing of Krystal Jean Baker, Texas City Police Chief Robert Burby said.

DNA gathered from the case and processed through the Texas Department of Public Safety led to an arrest, Burby said.

http://galvestondailynews.com/story/178886/

She said, "I wish I could wake up out of this nightmare and hold my little girl in my arms."
Adding to her grief was the fact that her daughter's killer was never brought to justice. On the run all these years -- until now. DNA evidence led authorities to arrest 45-year-old Kevin Edison Smith of Louisiana. He was taken into custody at a job site in Chambers County where he'd been working as a welder.

Laura's Legacy

By Alex Tresniowski

Heartbroken by Their Daughter's Kidnapping, Bob and Gay Smither Found a Way to Help Other Parents Caught in a Crisis

Twelve-year-old Laura Smither was only a little late for breakfast, but she wasn't the type of girl to be late at all, much less for pancakes, her favorite meal. Everybody always remarked how Laura was so mature for her age, and if she said she was going to take a quick run and be back in time for pancakes, well, then, something had to be wrong. "We were out in the fields screaming her name," says her mother, Gay, now 42, of that awful April morning five years ago. "We thought maybe she had been run over and couldn't get up."

A young woman named Jessica Cain, just days away from her high school graduation, had spent the evening performing in a musical gala. A few of her drama club friends celebrated their performance at a Bennigan’s restaurant in the Clear Lake area. Then, she drove away in her pickup truck and simply vanished.

“You know all the time that she’s out there somewhere, and that the right person coming forward, the right person being brave even after all this time, and just giving us the information we need,” O’Neill said. “All we want to do is just know where she is.”

This woman is my sister. I reported her missing on March 21, 1990. Her remains were actually found 18 months after she disappeared by hunters. Montgomery County had her listed as a Jane Doe until we came across her in 2001. This should never happen to a family, I mean THEY had her as a Jane Doe but didn't let other agency's know about her. For 11 years I searched and searched for her. We had a funereal in 2001, we never got a death certificate for Beverly, and here we are another 12 years later and nobody will give us one. She came up missing from Harris Co, but was found in Montgomery Co. Anybody got any ideas how to get a death certificate?

Welcome, KKsRoost. I'm so sorry about Beverly. It's awful to think she was right there in MC all that time and her family didn't know. Such a shame!

In Montgomery County, you can apply online to receive a certified copy of a death certificate. The fee is $20 for the first copy, and $3 for each additional copy. You, and you must be a relative, and I believe you have to submit a copy of a driver's license. Here is the link with the information you need. I hope this will help you.
