GUILTY CO - Charles, 70, & Shirley Severance, 70, Sterling, 20 May 2014

"A teenage couple accused of killing the man's grandparents told police they planned the slayings so he could get his inheritance: a tiny house and $20,000, according to court documents released Wednesday."

"Rieb said the plan was to hasten Johnson's inheritance, which included the grandparents' low-slung home, valued at just $47,000."

"A judge on Wednesday advised the teens of possible charges, which could include first-degree murder, aggravated robbery, forgery and theft. Both were held without bond."

"Brendan Johnson, 19, and Cassandra Rieb, 18, are both facing first degree murder charges for the deaths of the Sterling couple. Logan County District Court Judge Michael Singer told them the charges carry a possible sentence of death or life without parole."

"The preliminary hearing was set for 1:30 p.m. July 15; a proof evident hearing will be held at the same time."

Death is an option. I am convinced the world has lost its mind. Pretty horrid. I'd be hardpressed, as a juror, to NOT give them death.

"The couple escaped in Charles Severance’ truck after Johnson allegedly wrote out two fake checks and forged his grandfather’s signature. It was not until nine days later that Brendan Johnson called police.
In the meantime, the 19-year-old Walmart employee used the stolen vehicle to go to a concert in Denver and to dispose of his grandmother's corpse."

"Johnson and Rieb are due back in court June 18. If convicted, they could face life without parole or the death penalty."

Anybody of the opinion that Cassandra Reib will try to back out of her original statement and say that Brendan forced her to kill at gunpoint? This case reminds me of Caril Ann Fugate. It does sound like Cassandra Reib was as much to blame as Brendan at this point. Interested to hear if she gets a much less sentence than Brendan. She actually might have been the leader IMO!

The silence in Sterling surrounding this case is deafening. Waiting to see what comes of it to be honest. IMHO....

Not guilty plea planned. Mental exam to be ordered. Well, perhaps not as cut and dried as I thought.

Reib's preliminary hearing:

In lengthy, hard-to-listen-to testimony Monday, detectives testified how 18-year-old Cassandra Rieb and her 19-year-old boyfriend Brendan Johnson murdered his grandparents, as his grandmother begged for her life...

On Monday, prosecution witnesses testified Rieb never showed any emotion, tears or sadness over allegedly murdering the two people. Tammy Lee, an agent with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, told the court Monday that the teen told her she "didn't feel bad about murdering someone"...

Court records and court testimony said Shirley Severance fought and begged for her life. Police said Rieb was "assigned" to kill her, as Johnson "took care" of his grandfather.

A man who, along with his girlfriend, was facing the death penalty in the 2014 Sterling slaying of his grandparents pleaded guilty Thursday, court records show.

In Logan County court, Brendan Johnson, 20, entered the plea to one count of first-degree murder. Records show that all other charges he had faced were dismissed. On April 27, he will be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole...

Prosecutors say Rieb still could face the death penalty. Records show a trial for her is scheduled to begin in late September.

A status conference in the murder trial of Cassandra Rieb turned into a plea agreement and sentencing instead...

After admitting to second degree murder and first degree assault with a deadly weapon on an at-risk victim for the death of 70-year-old Shirley Severance, Rieb was sentenced to consecutive terms of 48 years and 32 years, respectively, followed by 5 years mandatory parole.

One set of my grandparents passed before I was born, the other too soon and I never got enough time with them. What I wouldn't give for just one more day! And these two - ugh. Glad justice is being served, such as it is
