10/31/22 Update: Attorneys finished off the final preliminary hearing Monday morning, bringing forward two people for testimony before making their final arguments. Monday’s early morning hearing began with Eric Vanatta, one of Parker’s attorneys, finishing his cross-examination of Lt. Donald Robbins with the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office, who was a member of the Northern Colorado Shooting Task Force that was formed to investigate this incident & other shootings around the same time & spoke last week. Following this, Assistant District Attorney Matt Maillaro called LCSO Capt. Robert Coleman, who served as the task force commander. Erin Crowgey, Parker’s other attorney, argued that the prosecution had not met the burden of probable cause, saying they had not brought forth any motive or evidence that either alleged shooting was planned. She added that Parker has consistently denied any involvement in either incident, despite consistent questioning from investigators. 8th Judicial District Chief Judge Susan Blanco overseeing the felony murder case against Parker will make her oral order ruling on if probable cause exists for the charges against him Wednesday, 11/2/22 @ 10am.

Nov. 2, 2022

An 8th Judicial District Court judge found probable cause in both felony charges against Christopher Parker Wednesday morning, capping off a preliminary hearing that stretched across several days of testimony.

Parker, 39, appeared before Chief Judge Susan Blanco Wednesday morning to hear the ruling on his preliminary hearing, coming two days after testimony completed.

Blanco, in a roughly 30-minute oral ruling, said that the prosecution had met the burden for probable cause on both charges and bound them over for trial.
[.....]
Blanco also ruled that the proof was evident and the presumption great in the first-degree murder charge, meaning that Parker will continue to remain in custody at the Larimer County Jail in Fort Collins without bond.

She scheduled Parker to appear for his next hearing at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 4, 2023; Eric Vanatta, one of Parker’s attorneys, requested a lengthy amount of time before the next hearing to keep sorting through evidence and continuing to look into Parker’s mental health.

Feb. 3, 2023
The case against Christopher Parker, the man accused of shooting and killing William Connole and firing at a motorcyclist in 2015, has taken its next major step nearly eight years after the shooting and nearly five years after Parker’s arrest, when he pleaded not guilty Friday morning. His trial, which is expected to span several weeks, will begin in late October.

Parker, 40, appeared before 8th Judicial District Court Chief Judge Susan Blanco Friday morning where he pleaded not guilty to the two charges against him: first-degree murder after deliberation, a class 1 felony; and attempted first-degree murder after deliberation, a class 2 felony.
[.....]
While Maillaro said he believes the trial will take a total of four weeks, Eric Vanatta, one of Parker’s attorneys, requested that the trial be set for a total of five weeks at the end of the year.

After tolling Parker’s right to a speedy trial until early May — meaning the six-month deadline to begin Parker’s trial won’t start until then — Blanco scheduled Parker to face a jury trial beginning Oct. 23 and concluding Dec. 1. She noted that the trial will not be held on Thursdays when she has specialty docket days or on Thanksgiving or the day after Thanksgiving, making the trial a total five weeks long despite spanning six weeks.
[......]
Blanco also scheduled a number of other hearings to be held throughout 2023 up until the trial, including:

• A status conference at 4 p.m. March 22.

• A status conference at 2 p.m. May 9.

• A four-day motions hearing lasting entire days beginning at 8:30 a.m. June 26, June 27, June 28 and June 30.

• A pre-trial readiness hearing at 2 p.m. Sept. 25.
[.....]
The delay in his case came from questions regarding his mental competency to stand trial, though court records show he was ruled competent to proceed in the summer of 2021.

Parker remains in custody at the Larimer County Jail in Fort Collins, and court records show there is no bond set for his charges.

A man has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of William Connole in Loveland in 2015.

Christopher Parker, now 40, pleaded guilty Tuesday to second-degree murder, a Class 2 felony, for killing 65-year-old Connole on June 3, 2015. Connole was fatally shot while he was walking at the intersection of First Street and St. Louis Avenue in Loveland just before 11 p.m.

Parker was originally charged with first-degree murder after deliberation for Connole's death, but that charge was dismissed by the 8th Judicial District Attorney's Office as part of this plea agreement, according to online court records.

Parker was also initially charged with attempted murder for allegedly shooting at a motorcyclist who was not injured near Allendale Park in Loveland the same day Connole was killed, but that charge was also dismissed as part of this agreement, according to online court records.

Parker had previously pleaded not guilty to the original charges in the case in February, and a six-week trial had been set for later this year.

Parker will next appear in court for sentencing June 26. He remains in custody without bond at the Larimer County Jail.

5/9/23 Update: Parker plead guilty Tuesday to 2nd degree murder, a Class 2 felony, for killing Connole on 6/3/15. Sentencing hearing 6/26/23 @9am.

3 hours ago - June 27, 2023

Eight years ago, William Connole was shot and killed on the corner of First Street and St. Louis Avenue in Loveland. Three years after that, Christopher Parker was arrested and accused of the murder as well as another shooting that same night. On Monday morning the 8-year case came to a close when a Larimer County Judge sentenced Parker, now 40 years old, to 39 years in prison.

Parker appeared before 8th Judicial Court Chief Judge Susan Blanco for a multi-hour sentencing hearing Monday, coming around a month-and-a-half after he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, a class 2 felony; he was originally charged with first-degree murder after deliberation, a class 1 felony; and attempted first-degree murder after deliberation, a class 2 felony. He originally pleaded not guilty in February and was scheduled to undergo a 5-week trial starting in October and ending in December.
[.....]
He said that while mental illness almost certainly played a role in Parker’s actions that night, the true reason why he did this will never really be known.

“It is unbelievable, it is devastating, it is catastrophic,” he said. “The defendant, on that night, was engaged in a spree and tried to kill two people and succeeded in killing one.”

He added that while nothing the court could do could bring Connole back, he believed that sentencing Parker to the maximum penalty of 40 years in the Department of Corrections was something that Parker and the family deserve.

“Most importantly, Mr. Connole deserves that,” he said.
