Two Multnomah County commissioners Thursday morning said they were surprised to learn through The Oregonian of the added involvement by the FBI in the ongoing criminal investigation into the disappearance of Kyron Horman.

"As a mother, I can only imagine the horror this family is feeling at this point," Commissioner Loretta Smith said. "But as a commissioner -- and this is directed to the DA's office -- are we on the right track?"

"The short answer is yes," responded Rod Underhill, a chief deputy district attorney, who addressed the county board Thursday with Sheriff Dan Staton.

Underhill said any case must be proven "beyond a reasonable doubt."

"As such, it requires a tremendous amount of work to bring to justice an individual, or individuals, responsible," Underhill said. The role of the district attorney's office is to advise and provide investigative support to the ongoing investigation, he said.

"It's a duty that we will work and work and work until this matter is resolved," Underhill said.

Horman divorce hearing scheduled for Thursday cancelled, set over for another three months

http://www.oregonlive.com/portland/index.ssf/2011/03/horman_divorce_hearing_schedul.html

The Multnomah County judge handling the pending divorce case between Kaine Horman and Terri Moulton Horman has cancelled a scheduled Thursday hearing and will delay it for another three months.

Multnomah County Judge Keith Meisenheimer ruled in October that there's "substantial overlap of evidence" between the divorce case and the criminal inquiry and parallel proceedings could create a discovery nightmare. But he said he also had to balance Terri Horman's constitutional rights with Kaine Horman's right to a prompt resolution of custody, parenting, property and financial matters.

Kyron is on the cover of the March 21, 2011 issue of the National Examiner under the headline, "Did evil stepmom get away with murder?" The issue is no longer in stores, but it's on Ebay. I'm not sure if I can post a link but if you just search for "March 21, 2011 National Examiner," it will come up.

Just looking at a data base of murders and solved rates since 1980; Multnomah County has has a 53% solved rate overall in that period but only 38% since 2000. Overall about 1/3 of all homicides nationwide remain unsolved. Very sad, over 185,000 murders since 1980 remain unsolved.

Report from KATU on Kaine's weekend activity. The following caught my eye:

"Multnomah County Sheriff Dan Staton stopped by the booth to talk about the investigation. He said investigators are now getting help from the Oregon Attorney General’s office."

Just saw this on the local news.. (Fox 12 is out by the courthouse reporting live)

PORTLAND, Ore. -- A hearing is scheduled for Wednesday in the case involving Kyron Horman’s father and stepmother.
Their hearing is planned in the judge’s chambers starting at 9 a.m. It’s unknown if Kaine Horman and his estranged wife, Terri Horman, will be there in person or if it will just involve their attorneys.

Saturday, Kyron's father, Kaine Horman, and some family friends put together a big Easter picnic at Shute Park in Hillsboro.
"We just wanted to thank everyone for their hard work and support over the past year," said Kaine Horman.
Kids wore Kyron T-shirts and buttons as they scrambled across the green grass with big smiles, picking up Easter eggs.
Every candy-filled egg had a sticker with the missing boy's face on it.
