Family still searching for son who was last seen leaving his work in Buckeye

BUCKEYE, Ariz. - A family is desperate to find their 24-year-old son who was last seen in Buckeye just over a week ago.

"Very hard on the family. We're up day and night making phone calls, flyers, doing everything we can to try and find my son," said Daniel Robinson's father, David Robinson.

Daniel works in Buckeye, and Buckeye Police officials say he was last seen driving away from work, in the area of Sun Valley Parkway and Cactus Road.

"He just went to go get lunch or wherever he went to, and he was not seen again," said Robinson.

Robinson lives in South Carolina, and when he got word that his son was missing, he drove to Arizona to help with the search.

"Devastated, especially when not getting answers," said Robinson. "He was missing for hours by the time I got the notice. Didn't have any information on where he might have gone."

Robinson says that Daniel graduated from college back east three years ago, and he's been working in the Phoenix area ever since. Daniel lives in the Tempe area.

"Majored in Geology, so when he got out of college, he landed a job here. He loves it out here because of the rock formations," said Robinson. "Very outspoken guy. Very smart. He loves his family. Really close with his sisters and brothers."

Robinson says he plans on staying out here for as long as it takes.

"I need to find my son," said Robinson.

Anyone with information on Daniel's whereabouts should call Buckeye Police

'I have to find my child, my son': Man searching for missing son
Imagine driving nearly 1,800 miles knowing your son was nowhere to be found. That was DR's reality last week after his 24-year-old son Daniel Robinson went missing on June 23, 2021.

“I have to find my son,” said DR sitting in his Valley hotel room.

He'd just return from searching in the desert with Buckeye investigators, with little sleep and a heavy burden. He drove from his South Carolina home last week after his son disappeared.

"It's very out of character," said DR. "He would never go anywhere without telling family."

DC-R said Daniel had been acting strangely in the weeks before he went missing. He said Daniel wasn't himself and would make sudden trips without telling his sister, who also lives in the Phoenix area.

Search intensifies for field geologist last seen leaving job site in Buckeye, Arizona in June

When David Robinson got the call that his son was missing, the worried father jumped in his car and drove some 2,000 miles from South Carolina to Arizona, hoping for a miracle.

But it’s been nearly three weeks since 24-year-old Daniel Robinson was last seen on June 23, 2021, and his father, along with others, are still in Arizona searching.

According to an updated press release issued by the Buckeye Police Department on Monday, Daniel Robinson was last seen driving a blue 2017 Jeep Renegade with Arizona license plate NLA2CMA away from his job site near Sun Valley Parkway and Cactus Road, heading west, further into the desert area.

His father said they were notified of his disappearance by the company Daniel worked for.

David added that the company Daniel works for has been very supportive of the family throughout the ordeal.

A search for a missing man is spanning nationwide.

Daniel's family is asking for help. While his dad made the trip to se rch on the ground in AZ, his brother David is hoping to reach a broader audience from the Midlands.

“Last we heard he was at his job site June 23rd, behaving a little strangely according to the witnesses there," says David Robinson, Daniel's oldest brother and resident of Ridgeway, "and he drove off from his job site that morning and from that point forward, no one has heard or seen from him.”

“We called his cellphone and at some point his phone was turned off, we tried reaching out to his GPS system and that service wasn’t working, his car has been off, so we haven’t been able to track his car," David explains, "nothing on his bank records suggest where he might have been so we’re just little by little trying to figure out something, trying to get pieces and clues.”

The father said the last person to see his son in the desert was another field worker. That man told police it started raining and Daniel left the site.

According to police, his tire tracks show he went west into the desert -- where there is nothing -- instead of going east to the main road.

Police tried to get information from On-Star technology on Daniel’s blue Jeep Renegade, but there was no power to it, and his cell phone battery is dead.

To Note:

•went missing June 23 after he arrived at his job site in the desert west of Sun Valley Parkway, just north of Cactus Road, in Buckeye
•Daniel had not told anyone where he was going or why he was leaving
•he oversees many sites in remote desert locations, often working in extreme conditions and traveling long distances to work on projects
•Daniel’s Jeep was discovered by a rancher on his property approximately 4 miles southwest of the job site
•Clothing, his cellphone, wallet and keys were found at the scene
•David (his father) said he doesn’t think the investigating is progressing, so he has hired a private investigator and a desert search-and-rescue team and printed missing person fliers
•According to Daniel: LE didn’t do a forensic-type investigation, because they didn’t see any blood in the vehicle
•Due to the father’s concerns, LE then decided to swab the vehicle to look for fingerprints at the police compound where the vehicle is stored
•Once detectives finish processing the vehicle, David’s forensics team will scour it and go back through Daniel’s cellphone and computer
•LE is working with Civil Air Patrol, with plans to review the aerial photos and data to determine if further searches in that area are appropriate

David hired accident reconstructionist and private investigator Jeff McGrath of 3 Laws Recon Investigations to piece together how Daniel's Jeep ended up on the ravine.

  • “Immediately when I saw the vehicle, I noticed something wasn’t right with it,” said McGrath. “The damage didn’t match with the terrain and where it was laying.”

  • McGrath downloaded the vehicle's information from the airbag control module (ACM) and found the Jeep was started more than 40 times after the airbags were deployed.

  • “There’s an additional 11 miles on the car since the airbags deployed. So that tells me the car was driven around after it was crashed,” said McGrath.

  • McGrath says the system shows the Jeep was involved in a collision around 1 p.m. nearly four hours after he was last seen.

The Disappearance of Daniel Robinson

DISAPPEARANCE:
•Daniel was last seen around 9:15am on June 23, 2021.
•He’d been working at a site near Sun Valley Parkway and Cactus Road, near the Hassayampa River and west of the White Tank Mountains, testing groundwater.

SEARCH:
•Investigators with the Buckeye Police Department spoke with Daniel’s friends and family to gather information about him and where he may have gone.
•Some time before his disappearance, LE learned Daniel was acting a little withdrawn, but friends and family shared that he’d seemed back to normal by the time he went missing.
•Searches were conducted and local hospitals were checked
•LE obtained cellphone and financial information
•Family created a website dedicated to the search, and have organized their own searches.
•Daniel’s Jeep was discovered by a cattle rancher on July 20, 2021.
•It was approximately four miles southwest of where he was last seen, and appeared to have rolled 20 feet down into a ravine.
•The airbags had been deployed, and it was determined via the vehicle’s “black box” type recorder that he’d been wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.
•The driver’s side window was smashed and the front windshield cracked.
•His personal belongings were found at the scene, including his clothes, cellphone, wallet and keys.
•The clothes were found three feet from the vehicle, including his boots and safety vest.
•The investigators didn’t conduct any forensic work on the Jeep, so the family hired a team to analyze it. After they are finished, they will then look at his computer and cellphone.
•The family has announced their personal investigation has moved from a missing persons to a criminal investigation.
•However, the Buckeye Police Department do not suspect foul play in Daniel’s disappearance, based on the information found in his Jeep.
•His father disagrees and has shared that he feels investigators are just looking to wrap the case up.
•There is currently a $10,000 reward being offered by the family for information leading to Daniel’s return.

Who is Daniel Robinson? After Gabby Petito, calls for missing geologist to be found

After human remains believed to be of missing travel vlogger Gabby Petito were found in the Wyoming park where search for her was ongoing, many on Twitter are now drawing attention toward another missing person's case - that of geologist Daniel Roboinson, who disappeared on June 23 in an Arizona desert and has not been found since.

After a body, possibly belonging to Petito, was found by authorities, the internet wanted the same importance paid to finding Robinson. "I'm shaking reading about the discovery of Gabby Petito's body in Wyoming. While we're watching this case unfold, please take 5 seconds to read about Daniel Robinson, a geologist who went missing in the desert outside Buckeye three months ago. His father is still looking for him," one of them said, while another noted, "#DanielRobinson been missing since June. He’s disappearance is as suspicious as Petito’s. Some evil force must be residing on those hiking trails."

With A Spotlight On Gabby Petito, The Parents Of 2 Missing Black Men Call For Action

The families of two Black men who have gone missing in recent months — Jelani Day and Daniel Robinson — are drawing attention to this disparity, and pleading for the public's help in finding answers

Robinson, 24, was last seen leaving a job site in Buckeye, Ariz., on June 23, and was reported missing later that day.

A landowner found Robinson's Jeep in a ravine on July 19, Buckeye police said, adding that it had "significant damage" and had not been clearly visible to search crews because of the rough terrain.

The vehicle appeared to have rolled and landed on its side, AZ Central reported, citing police. Its airbags were deployed, and evidence suggests Robinson was wearing a seatbelt at the time.

Police also said his clothes, cellphone, wallet and keys were found at the scene, and that foul play was not suspected given the state of the car.

Robinson's father, however, has publicly alleged that he is doing more to find his son than law enforcement is.

In an online petition, Robinson writes that Buckeye police are "unwilling to move beyond their theory which leads to non-action on their part," and urges signatories to hold the department accountable for continuing to pursue answers.

He also calls for the missing person investigation to be changed to that of a criminal investigation, which he says would allow police to seek warrants based on any evidence obtained.

Robinson has created a separate online fundraising page to raise money for other efforts to locate his son, like printing flyers, hiring a private investigator, enlisting a desert search and rescue team and covering the cost of his Arizona hotel stay.

Witness: Missing geologist was acting erratically before disappearance

Within a matter of minutes, however, Mr Robinson’s demeanour changed from “normal” to distracted, Mr Elliott said.

“He was just looking off into the desert; he had a very, very distant look in his eyes,” Mr Elliott told The Independent. “Whenever he’d turn around again, I would look at him and look into his eyes – the first thing I thought was maybe it was drugs or something ... [but] his pupils were not dilated.

“From that standpoint, everything appeared to be normal,” Mr Elliott said. “Then I thought this was a medical condition or something. I wasn’t too sure. I kept watching him, but he just kept turning around and looking off into the desert.

“Then he just turned around and walked back over to his Jeep
, and I just assumed he was going to get something out of his vehicle. And he opened the door, got in, sat down, put on his seatbelt, then he looked at me and just waved at me and backed up and took off.”

BUCKEYE, AZ — On Thursday, Buckeye Police released its report about the ongoing investigation into the disappearance of geologist Daniel Robinson.

In the days prior to his disappearance, the report said he was behaving oddly with a woman he'd met while working a side job for a food delivery service. During a delivery on June 12, a patron invited him to hang out at her home with her friend. In the days that followed texts revealed Robinson repeatedly showed up at the woman's home unannounced, after she asked him not to. The report said he'd told family "that he was in love with her." Text messages showed the feelings were not reciprocated. Robinson's state of mind regarding the woman he'd met was a recurring theme throughout the report.

The report also shows that family believes photos on his Instagram account had been removed since he'd gone missing.

While Tempe Police were dispatched to check Robinson's apartment on June 24 they did not go inside until July 7. Civil Air Patrol, which is comprised of volunteers who do air searches, was not contacted by police until July 7.

''After Daniel Robinson went missing June 23, his father uprooted his life and drove from his home in Columbia, South Carolina, to Arizona where Buckeye police were investigating.

Once in Arizona, David Robinson reached out to nonprofit groups for help networking. Since then, dozens of volunteers have participated in searches and two websites have been launched to bolster his son’s case. One website includes a petition, which has more than 43,000 signatures, that is meant to keep police accountable because the case is stagnant, he said.''

''Daniel Robinson was last seen leaving his geology job, police said. Police have “worked with outside agencies to search more than 70 square miles in an effort to locate Daniel,” officials said.

On July 19, his Jeep Renegade was found by a rancher four miles from his job site, according to police.

Authorities said the Jeep was in a ravine and appeared to have rolled on its side. The airbags in the SUV deployed, police said. Daniel Robinson's clothes, cellphone, wallet and keys were found near the Jeep.

The next day, Buckeye detectives were assisted in a ground search by a helicopter and rescue dogs with the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, police said.

“Since then, they have not put boots on the ground,” David Robinson said. “We are the ones with the boots on the ground.”

Missing geologist’s family flies to Arizona to demand police action

Sept 26
Missing geologist Daniel Robinson’s mother and siblings flew to Arizona to hold a press conference on Sunday outside the Buckeye Police Department in an attempt to keep pressure on authorities to find the 24-year-old, who hasn’t been seen in months

Daniel’s father told The Independent that the family would start organising their own searches again for his son in the coming week.

The family’s hired private investigator, former police officer Jeff McGrath, has uncovered confusing data from the geologist’s Jeep – which was spotted by a rancher, lying on its side in a ravine with the airbag deployed, on 20 July.

Evidence from the vehicle showed that it crashed and then drove another 11 miles before ending up in the ravine with a last known speed of 30mph, Mr McGrath told The Independenteven though he couldn’t recreate those speed conditions in the terrain.

“Maybe he did just take off, but he’s got nothing,” Mr McGrath told The Independentthis week. “There’s no evidence that he built an account somewhere to have money; he didn’t have much money to begin with. He didn’t have a phone, his ID ... we didn’t see any of that pre-planning that you would see if somebody just wanted to just go be someone else.”

The detective added that “nothing makes sense about the vehicle and where it was and his clothes being just out there”.

….

A spokeswoman for the Buckeye Police Department told The Independent Sunday that a “meeting with the outside expert to analyse the vehicle data is set to happen in the coming days.”

Robinson hired Jeff McGrath, who said he downloaded the Jeep's so-called black box and allegedly found things that concerned him.

"So [Daniel] went missing anywhere from 9:15 to 9:45 in the morning, and the Uconnect tells us that the airbags blew at about 1:00 p.m. So there's a time gap there," said McGrath.

"I don't know if somebody is joyriding in this car; found it and decided they wanted to crash it. If somebody was trying to make it look like somebody was injured or died in this vehicle. I just don't know what happened," McGrath added.

McGrath said he reached out to the Buckeye Police Department to share his findings, but said he's been met with difficulty.

"I have relayed all my information to them. I don't think they want to hear what I have to say," said McGrath.

Authorities have maintained an "open line of communication" with the Robinson family and their private investigator, the Buckeye Police Department told ABC News.
