The article states the science isn't good enough to positively identify who. That was never the dogs job. The dogs did their job.

Perhaps now the science has improved to the point of positive identification? Maybe they should try again.

low copy number (LCN) dna testing IS the cutting edge technology in dna analysis. It is only used in the UK and New Zealand; the United States does not consider it reliable because of the manipulation of the dna components and extreme probability of contamination.

The dogs were not wrong, they alerted where dna was found. The human interpretation of what those alerts represented was the problem.

Even if there WAS a more recent scientific test available, LCN dna testing is a destructive test, meaning that the testing destroys the sample, and since there was only miniscule cells to identify in the first place, none can be saved for confirmation later--another reason the U.S. doesn't use it. The results can not be verified to a standard or reproduced.
