ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. -- Jailhouse surveillance video released Wednesday by the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office shows a tearful Misty Cummings talking with her mother via video conferencing.


"Mom, I want out of here. I want out so bad," Misty said while crying. "Man, I miss you guys. I'm stuck in this one little cell the whole time. They won't let me do anything."

As the new charges were being handed down and the amounts increased for Ronald Cummings and Misty Croslin Wednesday, Frebruary 3, 2010, I spoke on the telephone with Putnam County Sheriff Jeff Hardy and asked him about the drug trafficking case involving Ron and Misty, the Haleigh Cummings case, some jail escapes and matters of safety pertaining to the jail.

TJ: Good afternoon, Sheriff Hardy. Thank you for taking time out of your day to speak with me.

JH: Not a problem.

TJ: First year as a Sheriff...a lot of challenges including the disapperance of Haleigh Cummings. Any light at the end of the tunnel as far as a resolution in this investigation.

JH: This is an ongoing investigation.

TJ: Are we still looking for a live child? Some have stated that the Putnam County Sheriff's Office is looking for either a live child or possibly a dead child, but prefers to think the child is alive.

JH: Don't you want us to find a live child?

TJ: Yes! Who wouldn't?

JH: I believe we are looking for a live child, but we--like the families--are prepared to for a real possibility that she might not be alive.

TJ: Where is Ronald Cummings being held in the Putnam County Jail?

JH: He is in solitary confinement.

TJ: What is it like? All I know about solitary is what I've seen in those old prison movies from the 1940's.

JH: He has a small cot and a toilet.

TJ: A cot and a pot?

JH: You could say that.

TJ: How has this case affected your detectives and other deputies working the case?

JH: It has been very intense. Some of our officers have had to be pulled off the case from time-to-time due to exhaustion. Losing this child has been like losing one of our own children.

TJ: I want to ask you a few things about your jail....

JH: Excellent questions...

TJ: It is common knowledge around here that the jail is overcrowded. It's a facility built to house about 236 inmates and at last count, you have 360 behind bars there!

JH: I knew about this problem coming into office. It's been talked about for nearly a decade and now it's time for some meaningful action. Just this past year we've had a jail break where two escapees killed an innocent woman. Later, we had an inmate shot and killed trying to escape. Our inmate to officer ratio is too high--officers get hurt... We need about 29 more jail personnel.

TJ: How much worse does it need to get?

JH: We have the lowest bond schedules in the state. We are backed up on warrants served due to the over crowding at the jail.

TJ: Isn't the jail facing the very real possibility of being shut down by the feds due to overcrowding? It has happened before in other places, correct?

JH: I think it could happen. It's frustrating....my job is to catch bad guys and get them off the street and housed safely away from our citizens--that's what I was elected to do!

TJ: What action steps are you taking to remedy this problem?

JH: I plan on meeting with the County Manager and the County Commission shortly. We need to take actions to expedite the judicial process. This ISN'T a catch a release program!

Officials at the Putnam County Jail released the latest recorded audio from Ronald Cummings, another one of the suspects in that drug bust and the father of 6-year-old HaLeigh Cummings who was taken from her Satsuma, FL home one year ago and to date has not been found.

February 10, 2009 was the last time anyone saw Haleigh Cummings. She was taken from her home where she and her younger brother were being watched by Misty Croslin.



The original incident report stated that deputies Nelson and Bridges arrived at the home of HaLeigh's father , Ronald Cummings, at approximately 3:40 a.m. February 10, 2009. Deputy Nelson wrote in the report that Ronald was standing in the driveway and was visibly upset.

Ronald stated that he had just come home from work and his "dumb b*tch girlfriend" had told him that Haleigh was missing.

Ronald told LE he did not know what she was wearing, all he knew was that the back door was open. Ronald repeatedly said someone had taken his child and that "when I find him, I will kill him."

Some have to questioned if Ronald actually knew the gender of HaLeigh's abductor or was just saying "him" referring to anyone.

Misty Croslin had taken the children out of the home in the past while sitting with them. Misty stated that sometimes she took them for a walk to see her family.

Who might have taken her remains unanswered. LE believe this to be a non-stranger abduction.

Sheriff Lieutenant J. Greenwood says police are still trying to figure out what happened to Haleigh.


PCSO, FDLE and the FBI have been investigating potential leads and are still receiving reported sightings. LE has received over 600 reported Haleigh sightings so far.

Here are some of the facts:



•We have received 5,768 leads, all of which have been followed up on by investigators.

•Approximately 600 of the leads received have come from psychics or individuals claiming to have special abilities. All of these leads have been reviewed by investigators, and leads containing specific information that can be verified have been followed up on.

•The majority of the leads received are suggestions or opinions from citizens stating who they believe is responsible for Haleigh's disappearance, and/or how the investigation should be conducted. These types of leads are reviewed by the investigative team, but many of these require little or no follow up investigation.

•We have conducted formal interviews with 76 different individuals who were identified as having possible information in the Haleigh investigation. DNA samples were collected from many of those interviewed and compared to evidence collected in the case.

•218 separate interviews have been either audio or video recorded by investigators.

•When situations have dictated, investigators have traveled out of state to conduct these interviews.

•We have received 644 reported Haleigh sightings from various cities and locations throughout the United States. Investigators have either personally determined that these were false sightings, or asked for assistance from local law enforcement agencies where the alleged sightings took place to follow up on the information. To date, none of the reported sightings have been determined to be credible.

•FDLE processed the crime scene. Many items of potential evidentiary value were collected and sent to FDLE's crime lab for analysis (i.e. for fingerprints and DNA). All of evidence has been examined and/or processed, but none of it has identified any suspect or additional leads as to who the suspect(s) may be.

•We have searched thousands of acres, including all property south of Highway 17 near the Cummings residence.

•We have had numerous underwater recovery and search teams search all of the water near the area of the disappearance.

•Aviation assets have conducted several airborne searches.

•K9 assets have searched the area on several occasions.

•Volunteer civilian searchers on foot and horseback searched the wooded areas near the residence.


As previously released, it is very unlikely that Haleigh's disappearance is the work of a stranger. Evidence and information obtained during this investigation indicate a strong likelihood that Haleigh's disappearance is the result of foul play by someone known to Misty Croslin and/or Ronald Cummings.

Haleigh Update: More Jail Video and Audio Coming!

On January 10, 2010, Haleigh's father, Ronald Cummings, and former babysitter/stepmom, Misty Croslin Cummings, were arrested on drug trafficking charges along with Ron's cousin, Hope Sykes, Misty's brother, Tommy Croslin, and Misty's friend, Donna Brock.

Recently, some audio and video recordings from the jails where the suspects are housed was released.

The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office contacted News Talk 97.3 The SKY to inform us they have two new redacted DVD video recordings of more jail visits with inmates Misty Croslin Cummings and her brother Tommy Croslin along with an audio CD with redacted phone calls from inmate Donna Brock. The audio and video files were too big to be transferred electronically and the notification came to us too late to get a courier to the St Johns County Sheriff's Office before it closed.

The SKY's TJ Hart will drive to St. Augustine at daybreak to get the DVD's and CD's as soon as the doors at the sheriff's office opens. Hopefully, we will be able to load the electronic information on to our laptop computer and have it up and online before 9am ET Thursday.
