I was a Sherlock Holmes fan as a kid, I think the dog question is legit:

Gregory (Scotland Yard detective): "Is there any other point to which you would wish to draw my attention?"
Holmes: "To the curious incident of the dog in the night-time."
Gregory: "The dog did nothing in the night-time."
Holmes: "That was the curious incident."

Is it de rigueur for members of the media to be privy to conversations between inmates and their visitors?

Who would typically provide them with this information? Other inmates? Prison guards? The visitors themselves?
