"As Canada announces a co-ordinated plan to confront human trafficking, the RCMP says the biggest deterrent against modern slavery may be your own eyes.

On Wednesday, the Canadian government -- led by Minister of Public Safety Vic Toews -- committed $25-million over four years to a national strategy to deal with the thousands of people who are trafficked in criminal labour conditions and sexual enslavement annually in this country"

OTTAWA — Two 15-year-old girls accused of leading a prostitution ring could be tried as adults.

The unusual case announced by police on Monday, where the minors face charges of human trafficking, robbery, forcible confinement, sexual assault, assault, abduction and uttering threats, is believed to be the first of its kind in the country.

"TORONTO - On the heels of shocking human trafficking allegations against teenage girls in the nation’s capital, a 21-year-old Mississauga woman now stands accused of forcing a fellow female into the sex trade.

And York Regional Police say their case, like the one revealed by Ottawa cops earlier this week, also involves social media.

This latest human trafficking case — the third this week in Ontario involving female perpetrators"

In the continuing effort to address the national problem of child sex trafficking, the FBI and our partners today announced the results of a three-day law enforcement action in which 79 child victims of prostitution were recovered and more than 100 pimps were arrested.

Operation Cross Country VI, part of the Bureau’s Innocence Lost National Initiative, was conducted over the past 72 hours in 57 cities around the country with the help of state and local law enforcement and the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC).
This is wonderful news. I hope that some of the missing that we have here are ones that have been recovered.

Police and prosecutors have arrested four alleged pimps as part of an ongoing investigation into a ring of human traffickers who preyed on abused and neglected children in foster care.

The men, police say, were part of an organized conspiracy to lure underage girls into prostitution. The four were charged Monday with conspiracy, racketeering and unlawful sexual activity with a minor.

The human trafficking investigation also involves a now-suspended child abuse investigator for the agency that oversees child welfare efforts in Florida. Jean LaCroix, a child protective investigator employed by the Department of Children & Families, was placed on paid administrative leave while police and prosecutors investigate allegations he repeatedly had sex with a teenaged foster child whose safety he was assigned to protect.

Is that all?? The sweep involved ~8500 LE officers and resulted in them finding 79 minors, that is a ratio of over a hundred LE to one minor recovered. That doesn't sound very efficient to me, in fact it suggests that the problem with child prostitution is vastly overstated. How hard can it be to find these kids, if the issue is as big as they claim it is? do they even look?

Epic fail!!

The fact that this is a state run facility and there was such a lack of supervision, that this continued on for a year and a half is :cursing:

Sounds like some :sweep: house is in order.

I suspect that human trafficking is going to overtake drug trafficking because thugs like the easy way. jmo.

TORONTO – When Timea Nagy answered an ad in a Budapest newspaper, she thought she was coming to Toronto to work as a nanny for the summer.

Instead, when the 19-year-old was picked up by three burly men awaiting her at Pearson Airport, she was told she now owed $3,000 for her travel expenses and would have to pay them back by working as a stripper and sex worker. "I freaked out. I wanted to go home," she said.

But that wasn't an option. The men told her that if she didn't pay off her debt to them, they'd kill her family back in Hungary"

We need a blanket ban on ALL sex offenders from ALL Internet and smartphone usage, no matter the constitutionality. RSO's should have to pay for special cellphone or landline phones that have no texting capabilities and all numbers automatically recorded and provided to the registration officers of each RSO in real time.

If RSO's need to use the Internet for official reasons, then perhaps a station can be set up at the police or sheriff station where they can pay $10 an hour for usage of a limited, highly filtered Internet, with the understanding that every usage will be recorded.

I have reason to believe that such a ban would most probably be approved 5-4 by the Supreme Court as current membership lasts, despite lower court rulings. This ruling ALONE would significantly reduce any trafficking of children by RSO's near 100%.

"SUN - Three people were captured in Toronto on Tuesday are the latest arrests in the largest human trafficking case in Canadian history, the RCMP said Wednesday.

The RCMP and the Canada Border Services Agency worked together to arrest the trio, who were wanted on nationwide warrants for human trafficking"

"When asked about the investigation’s future, he said it was difficult to say because new information keeps appearing.

“It seems like the more you dig into these investigations, there’s more you learn about the parties involved,” he said."

I'm thrilled to see these recent arrests and rescued victims (minor or otherwise) of human trafficking. If it takes 100 cops to rescue 1 victim, I'm OK with my tax dollars being spent that way (reference to post #188). I look at is as cooperation between forces to crack down on these poor excuses for human beings and a message that it needs to stop.

I hope sentencing will catch up with the severity of the crime - seems judges may have assumed the victims did not mind being caught in this type of situation. Preposterous, but what else can it be?

Very good article, blunt and with graphic language- Not for everyone.

"According to the United Nations, 2.5 million people worldwide have been trafficked at some point in their lives, 80 per cent of them for the purposes of sexual exploitation. The global sex trade is the fastest growing commerce and is worth $32 billion a year – second in value only to drugs, though unlike a kilo of cocaine, a girl can be sold over and over again.

But while the popular imagination may conjure the faces of women and girls found in containers at the Old Port, or tied to a bed in a sleazy motel in Belgrade, Monchamp and his fellow officers at the vice squad in Montreal are concerned about victims much closer to home, possibly the girl next door, and the economic forces that keep them in bondage"

Canada is a major destination for sex tourism? I want to hear more about that and what is being done about it.

Pete Seeger- "where have all the young girls gone?" Maybe this is the answer....

"Covering 175 countries, the report released Tuesday is available at http://www.state.gov/g/tip/rls/tiprpt/2009/index.htm.

The report says Canada is a source and destination country for men, women, and children trafficked for the purposes of commercial sexual exploitation and forced labour.

Many trafficking victims are from Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, Vietnam, China, South Korea, the Philippines, Russia, and Ukraine. Asian victims tend to be trafficked more frequently to Vancouver and Western Canada, while Eastern European and Latin American victims are trafficked to Toronto, Montreal, and Eastern Canada, the report states.

It also says Canadian women and girls, many of whom are aboriginal, are trafficked internally for commercial sexual exploitation.

Despite its failings, Canada is among the best in combating what the report refers to as “a modern-day form of slavery.”

"The US is a leading destination for human trafficking, with an estimated 17,500 people brought to the country against their will. Others, like Minh, are citizens trafficked within the country's borders."

Snip.

"As the fight against human trafficking progresses, however, so too does the strategy used by the traffickers.

"Actions of modern day slavers include seizing travel documents, creating hidden fees that become impossible debts to pay off, and threatening police retribution or violence against family members at home if the victim tries to leave."

"Other challenges remain, especially for US citizens who have been trafficked since childhood. Pinkett Smith told the story of two more American women sex slaves. In each case, the police did not protect the girls - they prosecuted them.

One girl, Jamm, was sold for sex by her aunt over 100 times. "Trying to escape, Jamm stole her aunt's cell phone to try and call for help. Her aunt called the police to report the phone stolen and at age 15, Jamm was arrested and treated like a criminal," said Pinkett Smith.

Another girl was processed through the juvenile justice system 16 times over two years - and over the same period of time was being consistently beaten and sold for sex"

BBM

The trafficking of First Nation women has been known for a long time, the Canadian government turns a blind eye to it because they are aboriginal.

So Canada now has the Nigerian scammers and sex trafficking. hhhmm
