Hurricane Ike and Topical Storm Hanna

Hi KATO, I'm all safe up in Oregon.
But I'm so worried about you down there in the thick of it, and want to say to you and all of our WSleuthers down there, GET OUT OF DODGE!~

I don't mean to be melodramatic. I just heard the Anderson Cooper Report on CNN, and he said it is the strongest WARNING NOTICE given by the Weather Service EVER about danger involving a hurricane.

He said get out now while you can or you will die. Actually it is exactly what Anderson said. I read today they raised that island by Galveston Bay up 20', but IKE will have a surge well over that plus an additional 20' which is why once it hits, everything will be under water.

Major Monstor storm it is, and the only salvation is to get out of it's way to safety.

God Bless you all. Let us know how you are until the power goes. xoxoxoxoxo

I just turned on AC. I'll check in tomorrow.

A News Update upcoming soon.

BTW, There has never been a National Weather Bulletin stating 'Certain Death' that these reporters can remember.

23' of water running over the top of your home which is 4' over sea level will do it. They expect that area to be totally wiped out. All those lovely homes gone tomorrow.

Data from both NOAA and air force hurricane hunter aircraft indicate that maximum sustained winds remain near 100 mph...160 km/hr...with higher gusts. Ike is a category two hurricane on the saffir-simpson scale. Some strengthening is forecast during the next 24 hours or so...and ike could become a major hurricane before reaching the coast.

The aircraft data indicate that ike remains a large cyclone.
Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 115 miles...185
km...from the center...and tropical storm force winds extend
outward up to 265 miles...425 km.

The estimated minimum central pressure based on aircraft data is 956 mb...28.23 inches.

Coastal storm surge flooding of up to 20 feet above normal tide levels...along with large and dangerous battering waves...can be expected near and to the east of where the center of ike makes landfall...extending a greater than usual distance from the center due to the large size of the cyclone. Surge flooding of up to 25 feet could occur at the heads of bays. Coastal storm surge flooding of 6 to 8 feet above normal tide levels...along with large and dangerous waves...can be expected within the tropical storm
warning area along the northern gulf coast. Above normal tides in the eastern gulf of mexico should gradually subside over the next day or so.

Ike is expected to produce rainfall amounts of 5 to 10 inches along the middle and upper texas coast and over portions of southwestern louisiana...with isolated maximum amounts of 15 inches possible.

Isolated tornadoes are possible on friday over portions of
southwestern louisiana and southeastern texas.

Repeating the 1000 pm cdt position...26.3 n...90.4 w. Movement
toward...west-northwest near 12 mph. Maximum sustained winds...100 mph. Minimum central pressure...956 mb.

An intermediate advisory will be issued by the national hurricane center at 100 am cdt followed by the next complete advisory at 400 am cdt.

Be safe, Kato and others in the way. Praying for you all. I have friends in Katy, and they're scared to death but won't leave.

I didn't know that about the roots. That's all we have around us is pine trees.
I'm worried about the pine trees in our yard. I never counted just how many we have until tonight. We have 11 in our side yard and 3 in the front yard. They are all more than twice as tall as our 2-story house.

I'm up in Lubbock and not near the coast, but we've had 8 inches of rain today. We're having a Centennial Event. Bad flooding that only happens every hundred years or so. They've declared a state of emergency and there's no school tomorrow. My house is low lying and I have flooding coming under the wall of my garage conversion room. Had to go buy 8 50lb bags of sand, unload it all myself, and wrap in trash bags to put out front and a shop vac to suck up rain water inside. I feel for those down South when they get back home.

Certain Death???????????

Breaking News Email from CNN ----

-- People sheltering at ground level at Galveston Bay when Hurricane Ike hits
face "certain death," the weather service warns.

I'm in San Antonio - evacuees are here already and more coming - lots
of shelters set up in our schools .

we are 10- 12" below normal for rainfall so we need some moisture

but we flood with just regular rains . The grocery stores are packed

and shelves are emptying of some things .

I will be putting out sandbags at the back of my house . The water

drains towards my house and I am in a low lying area - but not worried.

We often get rain from the outer bands of these storms

They have opened the gates on the river and flags outside trash cans

etc are being removed all over .

I have been breaking out in hives since yesterday afternoon

( I do this when the barometric pressure starts bouncing around)

If the elec doesnt go out will post - they keep changing the

eta - its friday night now .

I work for huge university and they are considering letting us

go this afternoon .

Heck, I think they should let you go. Geez. SA is going to get hit hard too with rains and wind.I remember when I lived in Texas how we would get hellacious (sp?) rains and it would flood just from that. Flash flood warnings in certain parts of Texas are embedded on the screen of most television sets (right beside the little tornado symbol).

KATO or anyone from that area please check in with us ----
Txlurker????
Anyone else????

Goodmorning all! Please check in as you can to let us know how its going.
We're still under a coastal flooding and tropical storm warning-and now a tornado watch. The winds are swift-but nothing to be too concerned about yet. I'm more nervous about tornados (thats the Texan in me :) ) We haven't had any rain except a small squal that came through yesterday around 11am.
I'm praying for all of you.

ETA: considering how strong the winds are here-well away from the projected path I'm really worried about how it will be where it hits :(

My kids have early release today. The stores have been a madhouse. We are in Austin. We should get some good storms. My family is all hunkering down....some in Houston, some in College Station. My mom thinks we won't lose contact because she has a cell phone....but I told her the lines are going to be jammed!!!

I doubt anything I could say would persuade anybody to leave Galveston if they're among the ones who are "going to ride it out" but just in case;

I've lived in the coastal South and Southeast my entire life. Experienced the brutal and destructive force of the smaller storms than Ike and I promise you, there is NOTHING money could replace that is more important than your life or those of your family.

If you're still down there (as are some friends of ours) please leave today. It's Friday. Just consider it a weekend getaway away from the coast. You'll be back home before you know it......if there's anything left of your home.

Good luck everybody. Be safe

I think the problem now is that it might be too late to get out - lack of gas, roads blocked up - they said last time they had a mass exodus from that area, more people were killed on the road than they would have been by the storm.

All you folks in Texas stay safe! I have the whole area in my prayers.

We are having flooding, tornado warnings and gusts up to 69 miles an hour. Every time the wind blows I think of y'all.

I'm hoping my power stays on so I can keep in check with friends and family. My cousins son in Baytown is staying, no matter how we beg him. He's about to give his mama a heart attack. They are worried about storm surge and winds I suspect.
