This is one case I can't stand reading about. What mom and boyfriend did to that beautiful child is so outrageous it's beyond comprehension. Add to that a judge with the foresight and curiosity of a snail and you have a recipe for the tragedy that it is. MOO

Just thinking about you today, may you get justice this fall Robert ...

Daniel Ehrlick Jr. wants to fire his public defenders
The man accused of killing Robert Manwill says his lawyers are not doing a good enough job.

Daniel Ehrlick Jr. filed a surprise motion Thursday claiming his public defenders "lied and misguided me on my case."

In a boiler-plate one-page motion, Ehrlick indicated that he "feels badgered by the public defender's office" and that his attorneys have failed to file motions for him and have been hard to communicate with. He wants to get rid of his court-appointed public defenders before his first-degree murder trial begins later this year.

Ehrlick and Jenkins will be tried separately, with Ehrlick scheduled to go first in October. Ehrlick's request to get rid of his attorneys comes at a key time in pre-trial preparation, as both sides have filed motions asking for strict time limits on the exchange of the vast amount of evidence gathered in the case.

Fourth District Judge Darla Williamson told defense attorneys and prosecutors that both trials were going to happen as scheduled this fall and all sides had to meet their discovery deadlines to ensure that happened.

After Myshin told Williamson in January he was given more than 20,000 documents by prosecutors - saying "there is such a huge volume (of documents), it's almost useless" - Williamson gave prosecutors until March 15 to get their forensic testing scheduled and tell Ehrlick's attorneys what experts they intend to call.

Ada County Deputy Prosecutors Jill Longhurst and Daniel Dinger filed a motion last month to require Ehrlick's attorneys to disclose by April 1 the names of any experts they might have testify - if the defense makes any claims that Ehrlick was suffering from mental-health related problems like battered-child syndrome or post traumatic stress disorder.

The next hearing in the case is set for Thursday, where some of these issues should be discussed.

Judge: Daniel Ehrlick's hearing may be kept secret
The judge wants the man charged in Robert Manwill's murder to be able to explain why he wants to fire his attorneys without harming his case.

Allowing the public to hear why Daniel Ehrlick wants to get rid of his public defenders could violate his ability to get a fair trial, 4th District Judge Darla Williamson said Thursday. She delayed a hearing on his motion and is considering sealing it to everyone but Ehrlick and his attorneys.

It appears she wants to make sure Ehrlick has the ability to discuss his issues without a premature public discussion of the evidence or potential defense strategies - both of which could affect his ability to get an unbiased jury, said former Idaho Attorney General David Leroy, a private attorney in Boise who is not involved in the case. "Once that information is revealed, it can't be put back in the bottle," Leroy said.

Williamson delayed Thursday's hearing to give media outlets, including the Statesman, time to respond before she makes a decision.

Ada County Deputy Prosecutors Jill Longhurst and Dan Dinger told Williamson Thursday they met a March 15 deadline to have all their forensic testing evidence (scientific tests on physical evidence gathered in the case) submitted to defense attorneys. That includes a package earlier this week that contained "significant" forensic evidence reports.

Assistant deputy prosecutor Jan Bennetts would not go on camera but said, "it doesn't affect the way we handle the case. We will proceed with the case and handle it in an appropriate fashion, regardless of who is working on the defense."

We did talk with Robert Manwill's aunt Trish Burrill. She says they are anxiously waiting for the trial to start.

Ehrlick's trial is set to start in October. Jury selection will begin in September.

The trial for the Robert Manwill's mother Melissa Jenkins is set to start in November.

Accused child killer opts to keep public defenders

A southwestern Idaho man charged with the first-degree murder of an 8-year-old boy has decided to keep his public defenders after previously filing a motion to get rid them.

Daniel Ehrlick Jr. told 4th District Judge Darla Williamson of his decision at a closed hearing Thursday. The judge later released a redacted transcript to the Idaho Statesman.

Ehrlick said he changed his mind after talking with the attorneys and getting a clearer picture of what was going on with his case.

For the third consecutive year, Peak Broadcasting Top 40 KSAS (103.3 KISS-FM)/BOISE PD/afternoon air talent KeKe Luv will put it all on the line to coincide with April as Child Abuse Prevention Month while bringing attention to this significant local cause.

Last year KeKe ran and completed a huge marathon -- and this year he's going to broadcast for 175 consecutive hours -- seven days without sleep. Luv will add one sleepless day dedicating the 8th to Robert Manwill and the children hurt this year due to child abuse.

KeKe Luv comes thru for Child abuse: awake for 8 days

Peak Broadcasting Boise’s KISS-FM DJ KeKe Luv has once again completed a grueling marathon for child abuse awareness and advocacy: this time he stayed awake for eight straight days—192 hours. It's a record for KeKe, and his marathon stint on the radio ended at 5 p.m. Friday.

In the past, KeKe ran seven marathons in seven days and stayed awake for seven days to raise awareness about child abuse prevention. The extra 24 hours this time was dedicated to Robert Manwill, the eight-year-old boy who disappeared last summer and was later found dead in a local canal.

His well rested supporters came out to share all of their energy with Keke during his final hour. Only Keke wasn't counting down to his bedtime. He was making the most of every moment he had left for child abuse awareness.

"Time to make a change, a difference, you know if we have five hours left, counting it down is not like, it's over with, but counting is like time that we have before we leave here to try and make a difference, and get some people to try and make some changes in their lives," said Keke.

Gruesome New Details on the Robert Manwill Case

There are dramatic new details coming out in the Robert Manwill's case showing what investigators say the abuse the eight year old endured lead up to his death.

[snip]

The court documents show witnesses describing rough discipline, pinning the boy to the ground, pushing his face against a wall, and hitting Robert.

"There's an allegation that Daniel Ehrlick committed the use of wooden molding to hit Robert," said Idaho Statesman reporter Patrick Orr.

[snip]

Ehrlick is accused of forcing Robert to lie motionless on the ground after "dropping a knee" onto his chest. The couple would also make the little boy eat food "he did not like" until he vomited. And when Health and Welfare workers would come to the mother's home court records reported Robert's mom hid him in a closet so they wouldn't see his bruises.

:furious: :furious: :furious: Who are these "witnesses", and how in the hell did they witness these things without doing something?!?!?! And the social workers who didn't DEMAND to see Robert after hearing allegations of abuse....wow.

How much more could one little boy have been failed. :(

Rest in peace, Robert. May justice come soon.

Melissa Jenkins attorneys say she may perjure herself if forced to testify against boyfriend in Manwill murder trial

The lawyers for Melissa Jenkins say she is too untrustworthy to be forced to testify against former boyfriend and co-defendant Daniel Ehrlick in his upcoming murder trial for the beating death of Robert Manwill last summer.

Jenkins’ lawyers told 4th District Judge Darla Williamson Thursday that Jenkins is a “self-admitted and diagnosed compulsive liar” and will be setting herself up for a perjury charge if she doesn’t corroborate some statements she made to Boise police and others during the Robert Manwill murder investigation.

i just read the released docs and i just can't believe the torture this poor boy went though. i am just so disgusted and angry. i didn't really have much doubt before, but reading that confirms that mom not only knew about what was going on, she was an active participant and he even complained to her that Ehrlick had hurt him badly and she did nothing!! we have been waiting a long time for the ball to get rolling in putting these two idiots away and here's to hoping they get the max possible. i'm so glad they had the you know what's to charge them BOTH with murder and not something else because they just didn't know who inflicted the final blow or some lame excuse.

justice is coming for you sweet Robert, although it kind of seems useless since you are no longer with us. i guess the only good thing is they won't be able to hurt anyone else. i think of you often.

An Idaho judge has ordered a woman accused of killing her young son to testify in her former boyfriend's trial.

Melissa Jenkins would be granted immunity for testimony in Daniel Ehrlick's trial, meaning it could not be used against her in her trial...
