ID ID - Stephanie Crane, 9, Challis, 11 Oct 1993

Although they operated in mostly California, I know they are being looked into for other cases in surrounding states. Nevada is one for sure it sounds like they hit. I know they are also suspected in Gayle Marks' disappearance as well. I do not think they have been looked at for Stephanie Crane's disappearance, but I think it would not hurt anything.
Somewhere, on the SFK thread, there is a long list of possible victims:

Any confirmation on the alarm? If she was carrying one, I think that would be unusual.

Was there something about her that made her especially vulnerable (perhaps a disability or even an illness?) and therefore she carried the alarm? Or maybe someone had threatened her or stalked her in the past?

Does anyone know if the Speed Freak Killers were in Idaho at all? These creeps went EVERYWHERE to kill on the west side, and if they did take Michaela Garect, I wouldn't put it past them to have taken Stephanie, if they were around Challis in this time frame. Just a thought,

I don't think so. Nor do I think it was Duncan. The investigation stalled, IMOO, when they focused a a guy who they suspected as the man who may have abducted Amber Hoopes. I think some things were seriously missed or overlooked. :-(

I highly doubt she had an alarm. I grew up in a fairly well off town near there and we didn't have things like that. They were very costly and the technology was not there for it. I doubt she had one.

I think as kids growing up in small towns in Idaho, we were really sheltered from the world and lived very protected lives. It was a blessing but also that in itself is a "disability"...The trust of the world, lack of streetwise, etc. But, she was a normal kid.

You're thinking electronics, I'm an older person and I'm thinking more like modified wrist watch that would set off an alarm and just make noise to get attention. It does say that 2 boys found it and couldn't turn it off so they buried it and later told the police/sheriff. Also I noted in one of the earlier posts that the suspect in the Hoopes case, and who commit suicide after abducting the 14 year old, had been hunting in Challis when this child went missing, so i wouldn't discount him at all. Rugged country out there, a hunter would have no problem disposing of a body without a trace. The 14 year old was very very fortunate to be able to get away.

I understand everyone's doubts about the alarm but...

If that is not true, where were her parents when this was being published in the news? I can see the police possibly jumping to the false conclusion that it belonged to Stephanie when the two boys came forward about it. However, Stephanie was only 9 and would not have such an item without her parent's knowledge. Therefore, if the alarm was not Stephanie's I cannot figure out why her parents would not come forward and say so or why the police would have any reason not to believe them.

I would imagine or hope that Stephanie's parents confirmed that the alarm belonged to her. Nothing else makes sense (to me).

BBM...Thanks for the information. So she had a wrist watch that beeped? I am confused. Can you provide links to this and the information about the boys finding it? I am from Idaho and lived 20 miles from where SC disappeared and I was in HS at the time. I know the area VERY well. I am pretty sure she had nothing that fancy as the family was very, very poor and the entire area is resource poor. I recall raising money via bake sales and penny drives to help the family feed themselves and so people could afford to take time off work to search for her...

What 14 year old got away? Amber Hoopes is still missing. The perp in that case was known to that family, worked for the grandparents doing odd jobs. Amber is presumed dead...?

Challis Idaho is a town of about 1,900 people in the middle of several wilderness areas. If I recall correctly, in the 1990's we didn't even have reliable internet in my town near there...I can not imagine Stephanie's parents having access to any of the media stuff around the nation. I don't think Challis had a lot of resources in the police department at the time either. I know people who grew up there...

The suspect in Amber's disappearance, Hescock, kidnapped a 14-year-old girl in 2002. She was able to escape. The ensuing police chase ended with his suicide.

Hescock was also reportedly in Challis when Stephanie disappeared.

All I really meant is that it is my hope that the police would have confirmed with Stephanie's parents whether the item belonged to her or not. That is very basic police work. Doing so would not require a large amount of police resources, her parents to have access to the media, or anything of the like. It would just be a simple phone call.

In my personal opinion, the existence of this little alarm pendant and the notion that it was Stephanie's had to come from somewhere. Could it have come from police error? Possibly.

I know others disagree with me, I am just putting my POV out there :seeya:

Hey y'all just to see how much a little noise alarm pendant would cost I did a quick search..

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Personal-Sa...590?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_2&hash=item257c3524e6

both of the above alarms are little keychain type pendants that make constant loud noise when you press the button. One of the above is sold at WalMart, it is two alarms for only $8. The other is a different brand I happened to find on ebay for only $7.

These devices can be bought for less than $10, they are really not very high-tech. Perhaps in 1993 such a device may be more expensive? Even at twice the cost, that would put you at under $20. I don't think the reason it is unlikely Stephanie had a device is because of money. My question would be, why would her family feel it was necessary in such a small town? Maybe because Stephanie walked around town alone at only 9-years-old, I don't know.

If the device did not belong to Stephanie it seems strange that no one else in the town would come forward to the police, claim the device, and dispel the rumor. It sounds as though the whole town was very aware of Stephanie's disappearance.

If this is true, then I wonder if we can figure out where he might have taken Stephanie. When he kidnapped the other girl, he tied her to a bed in his home. Is there anything on the net that says were this lived?

I agree with what MN lady posted about the alarm. Seems like I vaguely remember something like this being sold in the past. I'm sure it gave her family a false sense of security.

I just noticed, those aerosal alarms seem to last around three to five minutes. It would be very interesting to know if that was the type of alarm Stephanie was carrying. Because if it was, and still emitting noise when the boys found it, they must have been very, very close to Stephanie and her abductor that day.
