Police believe Thrasher was strangled and possibly sexually assaulted between 8 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. Sunday. Detectives said they believed the suspect entered Thrasher’s apartment through a ground floor window which was unlocked.

“The Detective Division is coordinating with the Major Case Assistance Team (MCAT) to further ensure all resources are being utilized in this investigation,” a statement from police said.

Police said after killing Thrasher, Mejia-Maya fled the state. Authorities contacted the U.S. Marshal Service and he was taken into custody in Florida Wednesday night.

Thrasher was supposed to sing in the choir at Living Hope Church in nearby Elk Grove on Easter Sunday. She was reported missing when she did not show.

Metzger said Mejia-Maya lived in a neighboring building in the same apartment complex, but investigators are unaware of any previous relationship with Thrasher. Police earlier said investigators believe Thrasher’s killer got in through an unlocked window.

Investigators tied Mejia-Maya to the murder after conducting multiple interviews, and learned he might have fled to Florida after killing Thrasher. U.S. Marshals arrested him Wednesday night in Jacksonville. Schaumburg detectives have questioned Mejia-Maya, who allegedly made “incriminating statements” after his arrest, according to Metzger.

Metzger said police believe the rape and murder was random.

“Right now we don’t have anything to believe that it was anything other” he said.

An extradition hearing has been scheduled for Thursday afternoon.

"We don't know if she had any (earlier) contact with him," Schaumburg police Sgt. Christy Lindhurst said at a news conference Thursday morning. "It's possible their paths may have crossed with the proximity of the buildings."

According to police, Mejia-Maya, a construction laborer, had lived in a building directly north of Thrasher's building for the last six months.

"He has made incriminating statements," Schaumburg Detective Commander Kurt Metzger said of Mejia-Maya.

Metzger said Mejia-Maya allegedly entered the apartment through an unlocked window but declined to share details of the crime.

"I wouldn't want to say what it was. It's horrible," he said.

"There is no reason to believe it was anything other than random," Metzger added.
