LAWRENCE, Ind. — A 55-year-old man walking his dog discovered a dead body in a wooded area near Fort Harrison State Park on Thursday afternoon, according to authorities.

Lawrence police said the body was discovered at around 2:30 p.m. on Thursday in a wooded area near Trilobi Drive and Lee Road. First responders who arrived on scene stated the body appeared to have been deliberately covered with leaves and likely placed in the wooded area overnight.

He has no criminal history in IN prior to a criminal misdemeanor on 04/30/2021. He was charged with criminal trespass and resisting LE. He was released and then failed to appear at his hearings. They issued a warrant but didn't serve it until 03/22/2022. Court set $150 cash bond and was told to hire his own council. He has a pretrial tomorrow (04/26).

The court records have 2 different name spellings for him and 2 different birth dates. On 04/04/2022 the record was amended to correct his name to Dauwan Lewis. However, it doesn't appear to have been changes yet so we have Dawaun or Dauwan with DoBs of 03/19/1996 and 03/13/1990. In his murder case, a motion was granted to change his date of birth.

He made his initial appearance in his murder case but has nothing else in the near future yet. He has a court-appointed attorney in this one. Since he was resisting LE, giving multiple spellings of his name and different ages, I'm wondering if he's been in another state prior to 2021. He is shown as being homeless in both of his cases. It's a bit unusual to find no other criminal history; I wonder if this was a domestic issue.

I can't find any news about this trial. The only thing I found is an update on an article published in 2022:

Update (04/12/2024): Dawaun Lewis was found not guilty of murder on Friday. The verdict came three days after his jury trial started on Tuesday.
