Today is his funeral. 38 years of service. I'll be posting other articles; I wanted this one to stand alone.

JOHN DURM

Deputy Sheriff John Durm succumbed to injuries he sustained at about 11:30 am when he was attacked by a prisoner attempting to escape from the Community Justice Campus at 675 Justice Way in Indianapolis.

He was returning the murder suspect from the hospital when the man violently assaulted him in the detention center's sallyport. The prisoner wrapped the handcuff chain linking around Deputy Sheriff's neck, with both of them falling to the ground during the struggle. As soon as Deputy Durm stopped moving, the prisoner unlocked his handcuffs, then stole one of the sheriff's vans but crashed outside the complex during his escape attempt. The prisoner was taken to the hospital with minor injuries and is facing murder charges.

Deputy Durm was transported to Eskenazi Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Deputy Durm had served with the Marion County Sheriff's Office for 38 years. He is survived by his wife, four children, and parents. His wife and son also serve with the Marion County Sheriff's Office.
*********************
His obituary:

Such a dreadful thing to happen to this deputy. Solely there then doing his job that he had been dedicated to.

Let's hope that evil prisoner never sees the light of day again outside the prison walls.

My heart goes out to his family. Such a devastating loss for them all.

May John Durm Rest in Peace.

The accused prisoner is Orlando Mitchell. The prosecutor has asked for the death penalty; this is one case where I hope he gets it. Mitchell admitted to shooting his wife to death last year.

Here's his case for the death of the Deputy Durm

UPDATE: A judge Wednesday approved the request to move Mitchell to the Indiana Department of Correction. It is unclear when the transfer will happen.

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Marion County Sheriff Kerry Forestal filed a motion Wednesday morning asking to have Orlando Mitchell, the man accused of killing sheriff’s deputy John Durm on Monday, to be moved to the Indiana Department of Correction.

According to court documents obtained by News 8, Forestal believes Mitchell poses a “risk of serious bodily injury or death to others.”

Mitchell was being held on murder charges for the death of 32-year-old Krystal Walton. Police say Mitchell admitted to the shooting Walton, the mother of his child, outside of a day care at Holmes Avenue and 10th Street early on Sept. 16, 2022.

Investigators believe Mitchell approached Walton and shot her as she walked from Charity Church Child Care Center. Multiple people witnessed the shooting.

Walton had called the police Mitchell multiple times before she died on Sept. 16. Walton was four months pregnant when she said her boyfriend had choked her and she was concerned he would find her, according to a probable cause affidavit filed in March 2021.

That same month, the father of Walton’s 6-year-old daughter came to pick her house to pick up the child. He had called to say he was outside in his vehicle. Walton told police Mitchell became enraged saying “I’m gonna *advertiser censored** you up! I’m gonna mess around and kill you!” as she was styling the child’s hair.

There have been quite a few filings in the Durm case but little info as to what they are. There are several subpoenas to Eskenazi Hospital, which is where Drum was taken; as well as a few discovery protection orders.
Hendricks County Superior Court Judge Mark Smith has assumed jurisdiction.

What does realtime mean in court reporting?
Realtime is a value-added service provided by court reporters to their clients. With realtime technology, the court reporter is able to convert his stenographic notes into text, giving the attorneys and the court immediate access to the testimony being given in deposition or court.

What a piece of human trash! My heart goes out to the families of Ms. Walton and Deputy Durm. What is wrong with people like him? It sure seems like the human race is out to destroy everything that is good and decent.

I'm not big on the death penalty but this might be one I would seriously consider. Killing two people almost a year apart tells me he's a very dangerous person.

Caught on camera and in front of witnesses leaves no room for reasonable doubt. imo
