GUILTY IN - Nicole Gland, 24, murdered, Chesterton, 19 April 2017 *Arrest*

Records: Man charged in Chesterton slaying had past arrests in California, Indiana

In Lake County, Dillard also was sentenced to 30 days probation in a 2014 incident in which he was charged with disorderly conduct, records show.

In November 1999, Riverside County Sheriff's Department received a report from a woman who said she had been receiving sexually explicit phone calls from an unknown man since May of that year, who "would describe sex acts he wanted to perform on her and her daughter," the complaint in the case states. The daughter was 5 years old at the time, according to the complaint. Such calls persisted and the woman lived in "constant fear that the caller would make good on his threats," according to the complaint.

Sheriff's Department police there interviewed Dillard in December 1999 after employees at a Payless Shoe Store in Riverside County reported that they had been receiving "annoying phone calls" that were "sexual in nature," records show.

Christopher Mark Dillard—in a recorded interview room at the Chesterton Police Department, with full knowledge that he was being taped—admitted to his girlfriend that he killed Nicole Gland, a bartender at the Upper Deck Lounge.

That, from the probable cause affidavit filed today against Dillard, 50, of Hobart, who was arrested shortly after 12 p.m. Thursday and charged with Gland’s murder.

At some point, while still detained at the CPD station, Dilllard asked whether his girlfriend might be allowed to speak to him in the interview room, Cincoski stated. Arrangements were made for her to be transported to the CPD, and while the two were in the room together—both of them understanding that they were being recorded—Dillard told his girlfriend that “I killed that girl, I didn’t mean to,” Cincoski stated.

Dillard “indicated to her that the drug had a hold of him,” Cincoski stated. “The remaining conversation centered around whether (the girlfriend) would wait for him and stay by his side. At one point, he asked her to marry him and then laughed. He also told her that he owed a drug dealer $400 for some cocaine.”

I think he made up the drugs story so he would have an excuse for his DNA and/or fingerprints inside her vehicle when the cops were questioning him.
I think that the truth is he knew she didn't lock her doors and he decided to climb into her car and wait for her to get off work so he could attack her. JMO.

He lied when he said he got Nicole's keys from her and unlocked her car door, later he said he returned the keys to her while she was bartending. Her friends had said that her car door lock was broken and did not lock. Wonder why he made this lie up? So he could lie about putting cocaine under her seat?

As a Hobart man was called Monday before a judge in Porter County court, there was a collective deep breath from the friends and family of the woman he's accused of killing last week in an SUV behind a Chesterton bar.

Christopher Mark Dillard, 50, had his first court hearing Monday after being charged with murder in connection with Nicole Gland's death. Dressed in an orange jumpsuit with handcuffs connected to his waist, Dillard stared at the ground or at his hands as he waited to be called by the judge.

About a dozen friends and family of Gland filled a bench and half of another row in the courtroom, passing a box of tissues between them as they waited for the hearing to begin. As the prosecutor read the charges against Dillard, the group put their arms around each other and stifled tears.

A not guilty plea was entered on his behalf to the single count of murder, which carries a potential penalty of 45 to 65 years behind bars.

Dillard had no questions during Monday's court hearing, but was granted the services of the county's public defender's office and was assigned defense attorney Bob Harper. Dillard told Porter Superior Court Judge Bill Alexa he owns no property, vehicle or bank account and had been working in food preparation.

Prosecutors were granted a motion ordering Dillard to submit to fingerprints and handprints, in addition to the more usual blood, urine and DNA samples.

A trial was scheduled for Aug. 28, with preliminary hearings June 9 and July 21.

Cincoski did say that investigators to date have interviewed “dozens” of persons. Anyone with information on Dillard’s movements late Tuesday, April 18, or early Wednesday, April 19--or who saw or heard anything unusual in the parking lot behind the Upper Deck Lounge on Lois Lane--is urged to contact the CPD at (219) 926-1136.

The Tribune is able to report that, sometime over the weekend, the sofa against which Gland’s SUV came to rest was taken by persons unknown from behind the Tribune building. Cincoski confirmed that the CPD did not place it into evidence.

When the judge reaffirmed that Dillard is being held without bond, a couple of the friends and family there for Gland let out sighs.
Porter County Deputy Prosecutor Cheryl Polarek requested that Dillard provide a full fingerprint and handprint as the investigation continues, which Alexa granted, saying it needed to be done in the next 10 days.

After the emotional hearing, those there on Gland's behalf were ushered into a room by the prosecutor's victims assistance office to be told how the court process works and to ask questions.

Born in Valparaiso, Gland "was a lifelong area resident," graduating from Portage High School in 2012, according to her obituary published Sunday. She "liked the simple things in life and enjoyed spending time with her family," and her friends looked to her for advice because "she was a very uplifting inspirational, sweet, kind and would do anything for anyone," according to the obituary. She had a love for chocolate, elephants, fall, the beach and watching sports, and she was a fan of the Chicago White Sox and Blackhawks, the obituary said.

Police previously reported that Gland was 24, but her obituary says she was 23 years old.

Folks who live along the South Calumet Road/100E corridor between Porter Ave. and 1050N--and who have residential surveillance cameras installed on their property--are being asked to contact the Chesterton Police Department at (219) 926-1136.

CPD Chief Dave Cincoski told the Chesterton Tribune late on Monday that investigators working to establish Christopher Mark Dillard’s movements in the hours before and after Nicole Gland’s slaying--sometime between 2:53 and 3:45 a.m. Wednesday, April 19--believe surveillance footage shot along the South Calumet Road/100E corridor could be of assistance.

Police continue to investigate several aspects of Nicole Gland's homicide, including locating the knife that was used to stab her to death, police said.

"It's still under investigation," Chesterton Police Chief David Cincoski said Tuesday. "At this point there are no new identified suspects other than Mr. Dillard and nothing has developed that would lead to additional charges."

Police are still searching for the knife used to stab Gland, which officials said last week might have come from the kitchen of the residence Dillard shared with his longtime girlfriend.

Police are also still looking for Gland's purse and cellphone, Cincoski said. The Northwest Indiana Major Crimes Task Force is assisting Chesterton police with the investigation.

Also "still under investigation" is surveillance video from the 100 block of Lois Lane, which backs South Calumet Avenue, Cincoski said.

Police have not released a motive.

Oh no. I can’t read the article. I hope his confession to his girlfriend remains.
