Admitted to police that he broke into Blanton's home and stabbed her multiple times, killing her. The affidavit said after Oberhansley killed Blanton, he removed parts of her skull and brain, heart, and part of a lung. The document said Oberhansley told detectives he cooked and ate the organs. Oberhansley told the judge that police have the wrong guy because his name is Zeus Brown and he doesn't know if he's a U.S. citizen. Police and prosecutors said that's the first time he brought up that name.
In 1998, he pled guilty to shooting this girlfriend Sabrina Elder in West Valley City. He also shot his own mother and then tried to kill himself, but he wasn't convicted of murder. Instead, he got 15 years for manslaughter. Oberhansley was released from prison early in 2012. He moved to Indiana and, while on parole, he was charged with strangling a person. And this past July, he was arrested after a high speed chase and illegally carrying a gun. But none of that information got back to the Utah parole board. Tammy had posted bond for her accused killer on previous charges just over a month earlier. Oberhansley's bond for the car chase charges had originally been set at $25,000 full-cash. Was released for about $500.
6/10/15 Update: Bail denied. 3/8/17 Update: Psych evals requested by defense is granted on 3/29/17. 10/26/17: Found incompetent to stand trial & sent to Logansport State Hospital. 7/24/18: Deemed competent to stand trial by psych doctor at Logansport. 8/9/18: Status hearing held; defense requested 1 month to talk & form opinion on their client’s competency. Next hearing scheduled for 9/21. 9/21/18: Will undergo another new competency evaluation. Competence Hearing scheduled for 11/16. Trial is set for August 19, 2019.

Charged with murder, Oberhansley rejects using insanity defense

"JEFFERSONVILLE — A man who could face the death penalty if convicted of the 2014 murder of his ex-girlfriend says he does not want the insanity defense used at his trial."

Joseph Oberhansley, charged with the murder and mutilation of 46-year-old Jeffersonville woman Tammy Jo Blanton, appeared this morning in Clark County Circuit Court No. 4 where he presented his case to the judge despite his attorneys' disagreement. Oberhansley had also previously sent a letter to Judge Vicki Carmichael detailing his wishes.

"What is the mental illness disorder that I'm...supposed to have?" he asked Carmichael and his attorney. "I don't like being portrayed in the light that [I am]. I don't suffer from any mental illness."

The defendant said he believes it's rare for a jury to find a defendant not guilty by reason of insanity; if they do, it means spending the rest of one's life in a mental hospital, which he's not interested in doing. He also said he feels using the insanity defense would admit guilt."

Judge rules man accused of murderer can bar insanity defense


JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. -- An Indiana judge has ruled man accused of killing his ex-girlfriend and eating parts of her body can reject insanity defense.

Joseph Oberhansley is accused of killing and mutilating 46-year-old Tammy Jo Blanton in Jeffersonville in 2014. He has a jury trial scheduled for Aug. 19.

Death penalty taken off the table for accused cannibal from Southern Indiana

Defense attorneys for a Southern Indiana man accused of killing his estranged girlfriend and consuming parts of her body have negotiated with prosecutors to remove death penalty as a potential punishment, according to the Clark County Circuit Court.

Attorneys for Oberhansley said they reached an agreement with prosecutors in which Oberhansley will withdraw his insanity plea in exchange and not present any mental health evidence in his defense. In exchange, the state will seek a life sentence without parole.

However, defense attorneys agreed to drop an insanity or mental health defense as part of the agreement, according to the News and Tribune.

Jury selection is set to begin in August.

Indiana man accused of killing ex, eating parts of her body proclaims innocence in 10-minute rant


JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. —

A man charged with the brutal 2014 murder of his ex-girlfriend told a judge he was innocent.

With his August trial date looming, Oberhansley appeared in Clark County Court on Monday alongside his lawyers. They argued to suppress evidence, including text messages from Blanton claiming she was scared of Oberhansley. She claimed he had raped her the weekend before her murder.

As proceedings were coming to a close, Oberhansley started talking—and did not stop for nearly 10 minutes.

On his way out of court, Oberhansley attempted to hold a news conference with the media before sheriff's deputies led him away.

Oberhansley told reporters two intruders were responsible for his ex's murder. "Two black male suspects. I told police that from the very beginning," he said.
