Breonna Taylor's legacy: Caring, ‘super goofy’ and treasured her job as a paramedic

Before 1 a.m. on March 13, police fired into an apartment on Louisville’s southwest side, not far from the state line.

Attorneys for Taylor’s family say Taylor’s boyfriend, fearing a home invasion, fired a single shot toward noise he heard coming from the front door. Police, attorneys say, responded by firing off more than 20 rounds, some of which traveled into nearby apartments.

Eight of those shots found Taylor in an apartment hallway, ending a life that began June 5, 1993, in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Until 2016, she served as an emergency medical technician for Louisville Metro Emergency Medical Services.

Most recently, she worked at Norton Hospital as a PRN and at Jewish Hospital as an ER technician.

“The investigation remains ongoing, and the specifics will not be discussed,” Cameron said in Frankfort.

Cameron said he knows how sensitive the case is, and that many around the country are closely following it.

“You have my commitment that our office is undertaking a thorough and fair investigation,” he said. “We hear you and are working around the clock.”

The attorney general also said he’s received reports from LMPD’s Public Integrity Unit on its own investigation.

“We have a responsibility to the facts and the law,” he said, adding that the team of six or seven people in his office have a combined 200 years of legal experience. “An investigation of this magnitude, when done correctly, requires time and patience.”

]Breonna Taylor shooting: Louisville police release incident report

"The four-page report lists the time, date, case number, incident location and the victim's name — Breonna Shaquelle Taylor — as well as the fact that she is a 26-year-old black female.

And it lists her injuries as "none," even though she was shot at least eight times and died on her hallway floor in a pool of blood, according to attorneys for her family.

It lists the charges as "death investigation — LMPD involved" but checks the "no" box under "forced entry," even though officers used a battering ram to knock in Taylor's apartment door...."

"....But the most important portion of the report — the "narrative" of events that spells out what happened March 13 — has only two words: "PIU investigation."

"Police have said the officers did not have body cameras on at the time of the shooting, but an attorney for Taylor's family claimed in a new filing Wednesday that those same officers were previously assigned cameras, according to WLKY.

"We've got body camera footage from Brett Hankison in other situations and then we got a citation that shows that Myles Cosgrove just two months before this while serving a search warrant for the Criminal Interdiction Unit was wearing a body camera," attorney Sam Aguiar said....

termination letter sent to Officer Brett Hankison released by the city’s police department said Hankinson violated procedures by showing “extreme indifference to the value of human life” when he “wantonly and blindly” shot 10 rounds of gunfire into Taylor’s apartment in March. The letter also said Hankison, who is white, violated the rule against using deadly force.

The letter said Hankison fired the rounds “without supporting facts” that the deadly force was directed at a person posing an immediate threat.

“I find your conduct a shock to the conscience,” interim Louisville Police Chief Robert Schroeder said in the letter. “Your actions have brought discredit upon yourself and the Department.”

Police officer involved in Breonna Taylor shooting fired

Sam Aguiar, an attorney for Taylor’s family, previously said the move to fire Hankison was long overdue. “It’s about damn time,” he said, adding Hankison was an officer who “plagued our streets and made this city worse for over a dozen years.”

“Let’s hope that this is a start to some good, strong criminal proceedings against Officer Hankison, because he definitely deserves to at least be charged,” Aguiar added.

Newly released audio recordings show that cops involved in the police shooting death of Breonna Taylor realized they screwed up and that investigators later soft-pedaled their interview with the cop who led the deadly raid.

The recordings reveal that a plainclothes officer went up to Taylor’s boyfriend after the fatal March 13 shooting and told him there had been a “misunderstanding,” NBC News reported Thursday.

By the time the NBA plays its first games in Orlando, it will have been nearly five months since police in Louisville shot and killed 26-year-old Breonna Taylor in her home. The cops who shot her remain free, and Sixers forward Tobias Harris doesn’t want people to forget it.

Harris’s message during his time with the media on Monday was brief but crystal clear: Arrest the officers who fired more than 20 shots and hit Taylor eight times.

Harris was asked about the T-shirts with social justice messages that Russell Westbrook and the NBPA are producing and whether players plan to feature them at all during this season.

“Nothing against the T-shirts, but we want to make sure that [Kentucky Attorney General] Daniel Cameron will arrest the cops and officers involved with Breonna Taylor’s death. And that’s all I’ve got to say,” Harris said.

When another reporter tried to ask a question, he continued, “That’s going to be my answer for every question. Daniel Cameron, step up. Do what’s right. That’s the only message I’ve got today. I appreciate everybody. Thanks"

Oprah places billboards around Louisville demanding justice for Breonna Taylor

Winfrey said "we cannot be silent" and "we have to use whatever megaphone we can to cry for justice."

"The last time I spoke to Breonna Taylor's mom, Tamika Palmer, she was having a particularly bad day dealing with the loss of her daughter," the video begins with Winfrey's narration. "She told me: 'I can't stop seeing her face. Her smile. It's what I miss most about her. I'm still waiting for her to come through the door.'

"Everybody who's lost a loved one knows that feeling," she continued. "For every mother and father whose child is out in the world right now, imagine getting a call in the middle of the night that your daughter has been shot in her apartment, and then you find out the people who killed her were police officers who should never have been there in the first place.

"What would you want to happen now? Would you be content to hear five months later there is an investigation and that no one has been held accountable for shooting your innocent daughter multiple times and letting her life bleed out?"

In her video released Monday, Winfrey said the pandemic has prevented her from protesting.

"If not for the coronavirus, I'd be out in the streets, marching with the Black Lives Matter protesters," Winfrey said in narration in the video. "These 26 billboards, one for every year of Breonna's life, are my offering, my form of protest."

Breonna Taylor case: The countdown for justice looms as patience wavers in Louisville

The FBI is investigating whether Taylor's civil rights were violated. Officials have not provided an update on the case's status. Taylor's mother has filed a lawsuit in civil court against the three officers.

None of the officers have been charged with a crime. Two of the officers remain on the force. A third officer was fired and is appealing to get his job back.

Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron dismissed rumors on Sunday night that there would be an imminent announcement on the criminal investigation, tweeting "the investigation remains ongoing...we continue to pursue the facts in this case through an independent and thorough investigation."
