It’s a case that’s over fifty years in the making, explains Cahill, “Alice Marie Reeves went missing from Ville Platte, Louisiana in Evangeline Parish in 1967. She dropped her baby off at the babysitter, never to be seen since.”
However, Alice Marie never intended for it to be the last time she would see her baby.
Adds Cahill, “She loved her baby daughter dearly and she would have not been voluntarily separated from that baby.”
Cazan’s Crimefighters, based in Mamou, were formed (in part) out of a recently renewed public interest in this case. It’s what led them to slowly piece together the details surrounding alice Marie’s life.
“At a certain point in her life, we know Alice Marie was a prostitute and we believe that she was trying to get out of that.”
Alice was training to become a hairdresser. According to Cahill, “She was on the right path. She was trying to do better. She was trying to live a healthy lifestyle and that was cut short.”
Her live-in boyfriend, Joffrey Bertrand, a known pimp during this time, had a history of domestic violence and a proven criminal record.
He was someone who should not be crossed.

“Everyone was afraid of Joffrey Bertrand, including his own family who knew he was a bad apple. (The) Bertrands are a wonderful family. This was just the bad apple that fell out of the barrel.”
It’s believed Joffrey’s violent nature eventually caught up with Alice for good. Explains Cahill, “We strongly believe that Joffrey Bertrand, who is himself now deceased, killed her.”
But this alleged murder is something that was never talked about in Ville Platte.
“It was something that was suppressed, very hush hush,” says Cahill, “It wasn’t even something that was gossipped about.”
