LA LA - Alice Reeves, 20, Calcasieu Parish, 1967

Her disappearance wasn’t officially documented with a missing persons report until decades later. Actual date of disappearance not known.

CajunFBI Welcome to Websleuths. I assume you are from her investigation team, glad that you have joined us x

Do you by any chance know which year is correct when Alice was last seen? I see some news articles stating 1967 and another 1968.

It’s a case that’s over fifty years in the making, explains Cahill, “Alice Marie Reeves went missing from Ville Platte, Louisiana in Evangeline Parish in 1967. She dropped her baby off at the babysitter, never to be seen since.”

However, Alice Marie never intended for it to be the last time she would see her baby.

Adds Cahill, “She loved her baby daughter dearly and she would have not been voluntarily separated from that baby.”

Cazan’s Crimefighters, based in Mamou, were formed (in part) out of a recently renewed public interest in this case. It’s what led them to slowly piece together the details surrounding alice Marie’s life.

“At a certain point in her life, we know Alice Marie was a prostitute and we believe that she was trying to get out of that.”

Alice was training to become a hairdresser. According to Cahill, “She was on the right path. She was trying to do better. She was trying to live a healthy lifestyle and that was cut short.”

Her live-in boyfriend, Joffrey Bertrand, a known pimp during this time, had a history of domestic violence and a proven criminal record.

He was someone who should not be crossed.
---
“Everyone was afraid of Joffrey Bertrand, including his own family who knew he was a bad apple. (The) Bertrands are a wonderful family. This was just the bad apple that fell out of the barrel.”

It’s believed Joffrey’s violent nature eventually caught up with Alice for good. Explains Cahill, “We strongly believe that Joffrey Bertrand, who is himself now deceased, killed her.”

But this alleged murder is something that was never talked about in Ville Platte.

“It was something that was suppressed, very hush hush,” says Cahill, “It wasn’t even something that was gossipped about.”

Reeves, circa 1967; Joffrey Bertrand

Details of Disappearance
Reeves was last seen in Mamou, Louisiana on May 25, 1967. She took her infant daughter to a babysitter in Mamou, never came to pick the baby up and has never been heard from again.

Reeves had previously been involved in prostitution, but by the time she disappeared she was trying to get out of sex work and was training to become a hairdresser. Her last known address was on New Street in Ville Platte, Louisiana. She reportedly adored her daughter and it would be uncharacteristic of her to abandon the girl.

Her live-in boyfriend, Joffrey Bertrand, was a pimp with a criminal record and a history of of domestic violence, and Bertrand is the prime suspect in Reeves's disappearance. Authorities believe he probably murdered Reeves, but he was never charged and is now deceased. A photo of him is posted with this case summary.

Authorities hope to recover Reeves's body for the sake of her family.

The case has been officially handed off from Calcasieu Parish to Evangeline Parish, following the recent Cold Case Conference at the Hotel Cazan. AMR lived in Ville Platte on New Street with her boyfriend at the time of her disappearance. It was shown that Alice Marie was on her way to a specific hair salon in Ville Platte, when she dropped the baby off at the babysitter in Mamou. Babysitter was aunt by marriage of her boyfriend. While she did have a cosmetology license, she was also a prostitute. The boyfriend, Joyfre Bertrand (first name spelled several ways on various documents) was on the birth certificate of the baby, as father. He was also Alice Marie’s pimp. Known domestic violence between them.
Do you know anything else about him? When did he die? Did he ever mention Alice to other people? Thanks in advance.

I did find an article indicating that Bertrand is now deceased due to a fire in a hotel room in Tennessee. And another article clearing up who the two other women in the room were.

Bumping, yesterday was Alice’s birthday. She has been missing for about 56 years this year.

March 30, 2019 - article from the The Advocate archived

Alice Marie Reeves, just 19 years old, had already lived a lifetime. Residing in Ville Platte, Louisiana, she had gotten pregnant at 14 years old, and the son was placed for adoption. She began dancing at men's clubs to support herself, and it soon escalated into prostitution when she met Joffrey Bertrand, a local pimp. They were living together in Calcasieu Parish, and she found herself pregnant with his child. After giving birth to a baby girl, she was so smitten with her baby that she tried to turn her life around. She began training as a hairdresser, and on May 25, 1967, she dropped the four month old off at a babysitter's on her way to the salon. The babysitter was a relative of Joffrey's. She never returned. She wasn't even reported missing until decades later, when her baby girl, who had been raised by Alice's cousin, grew up to be an Investigator Assistant in the same Parish her mother was last seen. Joffrey had a criminal record, and a domestic assault history against Alice. Authorities believe he killed her, but there's always the slight chance she left her baby in a safe place after realizing she couldn't start a new life with Joffrey in her life. He has since passed away. The son she gave up for adoption, has also recently passed away, and his obituary states his lifelong search for her. Alice was born on June 10, 1947, 5'7", 140 pounds, with short brown hair and brown eyes.

:( Reading the comments on this Facebook page is SO SAD. Alice's son died recently and searched his life looking for her. And there is another daughter (Alice's first) who was give up for adoption. The three children found each other in 2015.
