GUILTY LA - Lindsay Nichols, 31, fnd slain in burned car, New Orleans, 21 June 2015

More on the arrest in Lindsay's murder on local news today.

"The NOPD said an arrest warrant was issued for Samson for second-degree murder. He was tracked down at a tattoo shop Monday in the 4100 block of Washington Avenue. He was arrested without incident by New Orleans officers."

It's been a vicious summer in NOLA with what seems like a murder a day. Lindsay's murder happened the same week an NOPD officer was gunned down while transporting a criminal. I'm just relieved Det. Barrere and local LE was able to make an arrest in Lindsay's case this soon. There was another murder today in NO East of a 17-year-old and a four-year-old shot in the arm.

There is an epidemic of violence in our city and we can only pray for it to end.

From October:

http://www.theneworleansadvocate.com/news/13833810-123/911-operator-who-never-told

Lindsay Nichols made a desperate call for help to 911 early in the morning of June 21. A man was outside her car threatening her. The operator could hear Nichols screaming while a man in the background demanded that she open her mouth so he could place a gun inside of it. Then the line went dead...

Not only did it take eight minutes to dispatch an officer, but the 911 operator made what could have been a fatal omission: She never told responding officers about the gun. Two officers, unaware of the urgency involved, spent about 15 minutes looking for Nichols in a New Orleans East parking lot, then marked the call as “unfounded”...

Gamble said that after Nichols was found dead, the Police Department launched an investigation into how the call was mishandled. [Treva] Sip resigned while under investigation on Sept. 23.

From November:

http://theadvocate.com/news/neworle...123/exclusive-letter-intercepted-from-orleans

Over the summer, deputies intercepted a suspicious letter penned under a fictitious name and inmate number. The correspondence was addressed to a local tattoo artist whose older brother, Thayon Sansom, is in the Orleans Parish jail awaiting trial on kidnapping and murder charges in the gruesome slaying of Lindsay Nichols, a 31-year-old mother.

The letter, described by police as part of a murder-for-hire plot, ordered its intended recipient to “have a known witness executed,” according to court documents, and contained “instructions on how and where to find the known witness.”

It seems like calling 911 there is just an exercise in futility. You'd think that if someone had a gun that little tidbit would be something good to know..

Just discussing the preview of “The First 48” episode about her daughter’s 2015 murder brought Jolene Dufrene to tears, but she watched the television show because she supports any effort to tell her story.

“Just the clip I saw was pretty disturbing,” Dufrene said. “To see and hear it validates it. The detective said she died such a horrible death. I knew that, but they also showed a clip with her hard hat from work and it was hard.”

From last month:

Second man arrested in 2015 killing of woman in New Orleans East

http://www.theadvocate.com/new_orleans/news/courts/article_6d07718a-3c24-11e7-b8b5-9ba940e19c9a.html#tncms-source=infinity-scroll-summary-siderail-latest

In another twist in a case full of them, an Orleans Parish grand jury has indicted a second man in connection with the grisly killing of a Des Allemands woman in New Orleans East in June 2015. The man was arrested Monday.

Troy "Ville" Varnado, 29, was indicted Thursday on charges of second-degree murder, second-degree kidnapping, acting as an accessory after the fact and obstruction of justice in the death of Lindsay Nichols.

Sansom now is also charged with trying to have Varnado murdered to keep him from testifying, sending a letter with that request from his jail cell to an unknown contact.

Sansom’s trial date had been set for June 12, but the new indictment will likely delay it.

I hadn't been familiar with this case, but saw a repeat of The First 48 episode a day or two ago.

What a horrifying tragedy. From the murder itself, to burning the car, to the 911 call, to TS ordering a hit on TV to keep him from testifying... Absolutely horrific.

I look forward to following this trial.

Just watched the Last 48 hour episode on the case. Hope her son never watches. <modsnip>

Super scary. I can't even imagine. As you can see from the new orleans first 48 episodes, our criminals are extra brazen and violent. Too bad the city refused to renew the contract. Our episodes have good cases, but more importantly, you get to.see the good humor that runs through our culture. Even our police are just down to earth and funny. And Rob Barrere makes me swoon a bit :)

Troy Varnado found guilty in death of Lindsay Nichols

The jury deliberated just more than three hours before finding Varnado, 30, guilty of second-degree murder, second-degree kidnapping and obstruction of justice in Nichols' death.

Varnado will receive a mandatory lifetime prison term when Orleans Criminal District Judge Robin Pittman imposes sentence Oct. 30.

The mother of a young woman who was strangled, shot and burned to death confronted her daughter’s convicted killer in a Louisiana courtroom on Thursday, telling him: “I hope you burn in hell.”

“I hope that it will haunt you too, but I doubt it will,” Dufresne said, referring to the disturbing 911 call that Nichols, 31, made moments before her death, frantically pleading with an operator for help.

A judge sentenced Varnado to life in prison, as well as 40 years each on the kidnapping and obstruction of justice counts, the Times-Picayune reports. Samson pleaded guilty earlier this month to manslaughter, kidnapping and other charges and was sentenced to 40 years in prison.
