ME ME - Reeves Kemp Johnson III, 31, Kittery, 3 Feb 1983

(I work on this case w/PD) Here's some new information we haven't released until today's article in the above post from Portland Press: We are looking to identify (and hopefully connect with) a woman named Cheryl who dated Reeves in 1978. She had a young child during that time and lived in either York or Kittery, Maine. That's all we know about her at the moment.

She's not a suspect in any way and probably doesn't know anything about his disappearance. We just want to talk to her about his life in Kittery during that time and see what she remembers. I think it could help us fill in some gaps.

Police in Kittery, Maine, have uncovered new information regarding a missing persons case from 1983 with the help of a true crime podcast host, according to a press release from the Kittery police department.

Kittery resident Reeves K. Johnson, 31, went missing on Feb. 3, 1983, sometime after leaving his welding job in Exeter, New Hampshire. Over the next several days, Reeves' home and bank accounts were emptied, prompting his family to file a missing persons report.

After 38 years with little movement, Kittery Detective Brian *advertiser censored* reopened the case in 2021, partnering with Reeves' siblings and Kristen Seavey, host of the New England-based true crime podcast "Murder, She Told," in an attempt to dig up new information about Reeves' disappearance.

As a result, two new pieces of information have been discovered.

The first came in a letter Reeves wrote in 1978 in which he referred to a girlfriend named Cheryl. Though no other identifying information is mentioned in the letter, Reeves' siblings recalled that she may have had a young child at the time, and that she lived somewhere in Maine or New Hampshire.

Seavey also discovered that prior to his job as a welder, Reeves worked as a dishwasher at a Kittery restaurant in 1981. Borderline restaurant, which was located across from the Kittery Trading Post, went under foreclosure the following year.

''Police recently uncovered new information that could help crack the case.
The new information that has surfaced in this 41-year-old cold case is that Johnson worked as a dishwasher at the Borderline Restaurant on Route 1 in Kittery and police want to talk with anybody who may have worked there in 1981.

Johnson was 31 years old when he disappeared. He was last seen Feb. 3, 1983, leaving his job as welder for Donnelly Manufacturing in Exeter, New Hampshire. He lived in a cabin at Jewett Court near the Kittery rotary circle.''

There is a $6,000 reward leading to the recovery or whereabouts of Reeves Johnson. If you have any information, you're asked to call the Kittery Police Department at (207) 439-1638.''

Reeves Johnson, 31, went missing after returning to his Kittery home from his job as a welder for Donnelly Manufacturing in Exeter, New Hampshire, on Feb. 3, 1983. His family didn't report him missing for 12 days.

Police say Johnson's bank account was drained and an unknown person claimed his paycheck out of his post office box.

Detective Brian *advertiser censored* says a letter from Johnson to his family in 1978 mentioned a girlfriend named Cheryl, and he wants to find her.

"Cheryl is not a suspect. We don't think she was involved. This was in 1978. He went missing in 1983. All we're looking for is someone who knew Reeves and might know his pattern of life," he says.

*advertiser censored* says Johnson's checks were used to purchase an expensive car stereo and a lot of groceries.

The family is offering $6,000 for information leading to Johnson's remains or whereabouts.

The information about Johnson’s job as a dishwasher is the first break in the case since last year when investigators digitized the case file and uncovered a letter Johnson wrote in 1978 that referenced a girlfriend named Cheryl.

Cheryl, whose last name is unknown, was in her 20s or early 30s when she dated Johnson and would be between 60 and 80 years old today, *advertiser censored* said. She was not dating Johnson went he disappeared and is not a suspect, but he believes she could answer some questions about Johnson.

“We just need more eyes on the story. Someone has to remember Reeves, and they might know something and not even realize it’s part of this puzzle,” said *advertiser censored*, who does not believe Johnson is alive.

I'm wondering how certain the mechanic at Exxon was that he was meeting with the genuine Reeves. That's very important to know.

''The 31-year-old had recently moved to Kittery, New Hampshire, where he got a welding job and rented a cabin. An art lover with long brown hair who enjoyed reading and playing his guitar, Johnson was known in his family as someone who didn’t waste his words, especially about his private life. But he rarely missed a Sunday phone call to his family and wrote short letters every two weeks.

“My parents tried Reeves after they got home from their Bermuda trip in February of 1983,” his sister Sally Swartz told The Daily Beast this week. “But we couldn’t get a hold of him. He was not the type of person to just go off and vanish. He wouldn’t go off the grid.”

''It recounted how after Johnson left work around 3:30 p.m. on Feb. 3, he purchased guitar strings that were later found in his cabin. A neighbor told police he saw a mustachioed man in a black leather jacket make a brief visit to the cabin a few days later.''

''The letter from Reeves Johnson that mentions the mysterious Cheryl.''

Circumstances of Disappearance

Reeves was last seen at his job as a welder at Donnelly Manufacturing in Exeter, New Hampshire. At the end of the workday, he left to drive home. He didn't return to work or call in sick the following day. Furthermore, he didn't make his customary weekly phone call to his family the following Sunday.

Case notes indicate Reeves' boss said he quit, but the notes don't specify if Reeves actually said this to his boss, either by phone or in person, or if his not showing up was simply interpreted as quitting. Reeves' family had no knowledge of him quitting his job.

Within a 10-day period following Reeves' disappearance, his bank account was emptied, groceries were bought at a store in Stratham, New Hampshire, along with expensive thermal underwear at an outdoors supply store in that same area, and car stereo equipment at a local Radio Shack, all with checks written on the empty bank account. Reeves' family have described him as financially responsible. These purchases and behavior are not characteristic of him. Nor would he have bought groceries from a supermarket miles from his home.

Shortly after February 15, 1983, someone claiming to be Reeves called Donnelly Manufacturing to ask that his final paycheck be mailed to the Kittery-based post office box where Reeves got his mail. The police couldn't spare the manpower at the time to stake out the post office, so Reeves' parents volunteered, sitting in the post office's lobby in shifts. One day, Reeves' mother saw a man walk right up to her son's post office box, open it with a key, and throw away all the mail inside except for the envelope with the check. His mother confronted the man and asked where her son was. The man, who did not give his name, said Reeves was staying with him in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and took off running. She snapped a photo of him, but he held up his hand in front of the lens (see photo). She described him as a white male, young, wearing green coveralls and a red hat. He stood about 5'10" and had long reddish-blond hair and a neat clean appearance.

Reeves had picked up a hitchhiker on December 26, 1982, while he was on the way home from visiting family. The hitchhiker said his name was Richard and was headed for Detroit or Ontario, the opposite direction Reeves was driving. Richard rode with Reeves anyway and Reeves took Richard all the way back to his cabin in Kittery. He let the man stay there for more than a week, even giving him food and money for cigarettes, until Richard arranged to have someone he knew from Massachusetts come pick him up during the day, while Reeves was at work, on January 7, 1983. Unfortunately, a description of Richard was never given.

Johnson went missing from Kittery sometime between February 4, 1983 and February 21, 1983. The exact details of his case are hard to pin down as witnesses reported seeing him but often could not say for sure what the dates were. Reeves car was towed into the Elwin Park Exxon in Portsmouth, NH for repairs, the mechanic on duty identified Reeves from a photo and said that Reeves wanted “quick” repairs because he was heading south.''
