James Eagan Holmes, the suspect in the Colorado shooting rampage, is described as a quiet, standoffish, graduate student from San Diego who recently dropped out of a doctoral program at the University of Colorado medical school, where he had done research.

He graduated with honors from the University of California-Riverside two years ago.

The Denver Post, citing "information provided" to the newspaper, reports that the suspect described himself last year in an apartment rental application as a student who was "quiet and easygoing."

Two interesting snippets:

It also emerged a neighbor of Holmes said he remembers seeing him leave his apartment carrying his rifle bag and target most mornings starting from around mid-June, adding merit to the speculation he had been meticulously planning the massacre for weeks.

James Holmes' name was written in the return address box. The package was turned up after an extensive search of the campus' mail room. It is not known why it was not delivered to its intended recipient.

Authorities then obtained a warrant from a district judge to open the package, which is when its chilling contents were discovered.

3 snippets (I was mindful of copyright issues)

Previously, CBS News senior correspondent John Miller reported that U.S. postal inspectors had been searching through the mailboxes near Holmes' home looking for letters and packages he might have sent out. They didn't find any, but that's because the package had already been sent before the shooting.

Before opening it, the sheriff's bomb squad handled it with a robot and took an X-ray, just in case there were explosives inside.

Meanwhile, authorities also are investigating whether Holmes practiced shooting in the remote mountains northwest of Denver.

Here's an article that explains what the school's program is all about.

Interviews with top directors of the university's graduate program, and others outside the school, provide a glimpse into the lives of those who choose such a rigorous course of study. The Colorado program has been largely shuttered to public view since Holmes' arrest July 20, a month after he announced plans to abandon his graduate studies there.

The interviews on that campus were conducted on the basis that Holmes not be discussed, but what emerges is a vivid portrait of the intense world in which the 24-year-old student lived over the last year.

James Holmes, the suspect responsible for the worst mass shooting in U.S. history, has begun a legal journey that will include an extensive psychiatric evaluation and may include a plea that he is not criminally responsible for his acts--an "insanity" plea. As a forensic psychiatrist, I have participated in many such evaluations and then rendered expert testimony about killers in court.

Here's how they work:

DENVER -- The Colorado movie theater complex that was the scene of a gunman's massacre this month didn't have any uniformed security guards on duty the night of the shooting, even though other theaters operated by the same company did provide such protection for the busy premiere of the Batman film "The Dark Knight Rises."

Aurora theater suspect in court Monday morning

Robinson expects 12, first-degree murder charges. He expects 12 charges of extreme indifference homicide, for shooting into a crowded theater. Robinson also said he expects at least 58 charges of attempted murder. He added that several charges of first and second degree assault are also likely.

First degree murder convictions aside, Robinson says if convicted of all 58 attempted murder charges and first degree assault charges, the suspect could be sentenced to more than 4,600 years in prison.

Before he allegedly shot 12 people dead at a cinema in Aurora, Colorado, on Friday, James Holmes was considered a quiet young man, introverted but pleasant.

The 24-year-old had been studying for a PhD in neuroscience at the University of Colorado at Denver, although he was about to quit.

"He basically was socially awkward, but not to the degree that would warrant suspicion of mass murder or any atrocity of this magnitude," said Billy Kromka, a research assistant at a lab where he spent several months last summer.

James Eagan Holmes charged with murder, attempted murder from Colo. rampage

For each victim who died in the rampage, Holmes, 24, was charged with two counts of first-degree murder, one for allegedly intending to cause harm and another for allegedly acting with extreme indifference to human life, according to court documents.

A conviction under extreme indifference means that any life sentences would have to be served consecutively, not concurrently, said Craig Silverman, a former chief deputy district attorney in Denver.

Prosecutors also filed 116 counts of attempted murder against Holmes, who Aurora police said booby trapped his apartment with the intent to kill any officers responding there the night of the theater attack. Among the charges Monday was one count of possession of explosives and one count of a crime of violence.

Holmes charged with 142 felony counts in Aurora theater massacre case
In addition to the first-degree murder charges, Holmes was charged with 116 counts of attempted first-degree murder, and 1 count of felony possession of an explosive device. He was also charged with two violent-crime sentencing enhancers, creating an extensive potential prison sentence

Legal experts say it isn’t unusual for prosecutor to file two murder charges for one victim.

“It’s very common for prosecutors to charge cases in all of the various ways that they believe they can prove a case,” said Karen Steinhauser, a former Denver prosecutor now in private practice.

The extreme indifference charge is often used in cases where a suspect fired a weapon into a crowd, knowing someone could be killed but not targeting a particular individual in that crowd, Steinhauser said.

Jurors can return guilty verdicts on both murder charges, just one, or acquit, she said.
