Major Announcement Expected In Anthony Case

Sources close to the investigation told Eyewitness News early Friday afternoon that the tipster meter reader is Roy Kronk, an ex-military man who lost his wife to cancer a year ago. He's expected to appear at a 3:30pm news conference. The meter reader kept persevering about seeing something important in the woods close to the Anthonys' home (map from location to Anthonys' home), which has now been the focus of investigators for nine days now.

Meter reader who found Caylee Anthony's remains speaks for 1st time

Reading from a prepared statement, Roy Marvin Kronk said that he was the person who found the remains in woods off Suburban Drive on Dec. 11, and that he had reported a suspicious bag in the same area on three days in August.

He offered no further details, however, and said he would have nothing more to say at this time.

Lawyer David Evans said Kronk's role in the case was that of a "good citizen" and nothing more. He said his client has no connection to the Anthony family or anyone else involved in the investigation.

George and Cindy Anthony are mourning in private following the news that their granddaughter, Caylee Anthony, is officially dead.

Close to a dozen news cameras are stationed on Hopespring Drive and pointed at the Anthonys' house.

The poster featuring a wide-eyed Caylee leaning on her arm with the message, "Have you seen me?" remains posted on the Anthony's front door. Another is in the window.

Although the house is quiet, Lee Anthony's Ford Mustang and three trucks, including one that belongs to the family's pastor Shane Stutzman, are parked in the driveway.

It took authorities several days to analyze the remains, and some tests are still being completed. Some of the bones were as small as a pebble and had been scattered, and the fragments were hard to find by excavators who searched on their hands and knees, authorities said. The bone fragments did not reveal any trauma before death, Garavaglia said, but exactly what happened to the girl remains a mystery.

DNA tests conducted on remains found by a utility worker last week less than a half-mile from where the child lived matched Caylee's genetic profile, a county medical examiner said. But the only clue they give about her death is that her bones didn't suffer trauma, said Orange County Medical Examiner Dr. Jan Garavaglia .
"Bottom line is, folks, no child should have to go through this," Orange County Sheriff Kevin Beary said.

A jail chaplain told the girl's mother that the remains were Caylee's before the news conference began. Her attorney, Jose Baez, was with her at the jail shortly after.

"This is her private moment," Baez said. "This is her life she's trying to battle through right now."

The case captivated the Orlando community where the little girl's family lived, and Caylee has been a staple on national news as her grandparents pleaded for tips, promising that the girl was still alive.

"Sometimes you don't find evidence of homicidal acts," said Jeffrey Jentzen, president of the National Association of Medical Examiners. "The fact that the child died under suspicious circumstances of an abduction, that would be enough. And the method of secretive disposal would be consistent with a homicide."

We talked to ITT Criminal Justice Chair, Shelly Shaffer, about what is and isn't out there.

First, why toxicology reports will yield nothing:

&#8220;Any kind of drug or any kind of substance that perhaps Caylee was given would go into the flesh and the lungs or into the organs,&#8221; says Shaffer. &#8221;We don't have any of that flesh, no organs. We just have pure skeletal remains. Just bones.&#8221;

And about those bones, that's where the mystery lies.

On Friday, Dr. Jan Garavaglia confirmed "with regret" that the skeletal remains found Dec. 11 in woods just blocks from the home Caylee shared with her family belong to the 2-year-old who disappeared in June.

Garavaglia said the FBI forensic lab in Virginia matched DNA from the bones to Caylee's known DNA, but none of the skeleton showed any sign of injury that might indicate what killed her.

Toxicology testing still needs to be completed on bone and hair, but Garavaglia held out little hope that the chemical analysis would prove to be helpful. She saw no reason to delay a death certificate.

But experts said bones can reveal only so much. If a victim is beaten, stabbed or shot, bones likely would bear the evidence, they said. Chronic abuse and healed wounds also would show up. Toxic chemicals are another story. They aren't always obvious if organs and other soft tissue are no longer present. And trauma such as drowning and smothering would not be detectable from bones only, said Arni Masibay, an expert in forensic DNA.

Four crime scene investigation vans just pulled up at the Anthony house. The property has been taped off as a crime scene. Deputies have entered the house, and crime-scene investigators are waiting outside.

Investigators have several empty boxes.

Capt. Angelo Nieves said deputies found evidence at the site where Caylee Marie Anthony's remains were found last week and needed additional items from the household she shared with her mother, Casey Anthony, and her grandparents, George and Cindy Anthony.

"After reviewing the crime-scene site, our investigators saw fit to obtain an additional search warrant for the Anthony residence to obtain additional items of evidence."

There were some tense moments on Saturday at the memorial for Caylee at the crime scene that's filled with stuffed animals.

People became furious after a freelance producer said he was going to remove all the toys and gifts from the scene.
"This is so wrong and we will not let you take it," said a person at the memorial.
Skip Davis said he would take the toys to a home for underprivileged children in Orlando. He said the Anthony family asked him to do it.

The case's lead investigators and crime-scene technicians stayed inside George and Cindy Anthony's Hopespring Drive house for about an hour and 45 minutes before emerging with two large boxes and two bags. Orange County sheriff's Capt. Angelo Nieves would not identify what items were removed from the home, but said that "items of evidentiary value were found."

George and Cindy Anthony were at home when investigators arrived with the warrant, and a visibly upset George Anthony could be seen as they made their way inside.

"It's never a good time for anyone who's lost a granddaughter -- obviously we're going to treat them with respect," Nieves said. "But, we have an investigation to conduct."

On Saturday, a steady stream of people continued to visit a makeshift memorial for Caylee, where mourners left balloons, notes, pictures and hundreds of stuffed animals.

Kitty Bowersock of Winter Park placed three roses at the memorial Saturday morning. She has a 3-year-old granddaughter, Cate, and said Caylee's story has affected her because she can't understand how someone could hurt a child.
