Several Olga's Kitchen locations in metro Detroit are taking part in a memorial fund set up in honor of Nevaeh Buchanan.

The 5-year old Monroe County girl was abducted from her home in late May. Her body was found near the River Raisin about two weeks later. Nevaeh's killer has yet to be identified.

Nevaeh's family waits for justice, hopes for healing
Article published July 12, 2009

MONROE - Five weeks later, and Sherry Buchanan still doesn't know what to do with her hands during the time of night when her granddaughter, Nevaeh Buchanan, would be going to bed if she were still alive.

They're waiting for autopsy results.

They're waiting for an arrest.

They're waiting for a conviction.

They're waiting for justice.

Nevaeh slept in a toddler bed next to her grandmother's. Her bedtime routine consisted of having Grandma roll on her side, reach down, and lovingly brush away her hair.

Since the kidnapping, Ms. Buchanan has slept on her couch. She said she cannot bear to re-enter her bedroom, save for a few minutes now and then to retrieve clothes from her closet.

She told a detective that her 53-year-old body aches from mourning.

And waiting.

2nd Headline:
Relatives in mourning
"That baby touched a lot of peoples' lives," Mr. DeWilde, Nevaeh's great-uncle, said.

The DeWildes and the Buchanans have quietly started a campaign to have a permanent marker placed at the site where Nevaeh's body was found.

Ms. DeWilde said a tribute beside the river is important "so that parents don't lie back and stop watching their kids when they're outside."

Trees and tall grasses fill a riverbank so steep that it is a challenge for those unfamiliar with it to navigate their way to the bottom.

The site has become an unofficial memorial, with dozens of newly donated toys and stuffed animals dropped off by anonymous donors.

Family members said they would be touched if the community would come together with a permanent display, although they haven't settled on the details.

Mr. DeWilde said he would like to have it remain accessible to fishermen without installing steps.

One of Ms. Buchanan's sisters, Diana Lawson, 57, said she wants steps installed so that more people with mobility limits, including herself, can go down to the riverbank and pray.

3rd Headline
A growing collection
The makeshift burial site along the riverbank where Nevaeh's body was concealed is a recessed cavity that silt can reach when the river crests, a mere step or two from the water.

As the memorial grows, results of Nevaeh's autopsy, including the cause of her death, still have not been released.

Kerry McCafferty, a spokesman for the FBI in Detroit, said the agency continues to work the case with its law enforcement partners in Monroe County.

Several people were identified as persons of interest after Nevaeh disappeared, but no one new has been named in the case, he said.

4th Headine:
Shattered lives
Family members are at a loss to know how they will pull their lives back together.

But the Buchanans said they are hoping to produce a compact disc of music in Nevaeh's memory, including a song written for her funeral by a local artist, John Voss.

Ms. Buchanan said her son, Michael, 26, is producing the CD.

Proceeds from it would be split between the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis and a Monroe County fund dedicated to victims of child abuse, she said.

Nine bags of stuffed animals and other trinkets were donated to the agency that provides protective services to Monroe County children, the Buchanans said.

Ms. Buchanan said her daughter, Jennifer Buchanan, 24, Nevaeh's mother, is now living with a friend.

Family members said she was too upset to comment.

Jennifer had lived with her mother and Nevaeh sporadically since being released from jail for her involvement in a break-in.

Nevaeh's grandmother returned to her job as a cashier at a local Food Town supermarket 2 1/2 weeks ago after taking a month off because of the tragedy.

At the DeWilde home is a palm-sized remembrance that Mr. DeWilde made. It has a little toy car about the size of a thumbnail, a plastic figurine of a gorilla, a cross, and one of his favorite pictures of Nevaeh.

Its base is a chunk of concrete from the site where her body was found. Mr. DeWilde said he retrieved it from what authorities left behind.

As Shaun Lawson, Ms. Buchanan's nephew and Nevaeh's second cousin, put it: "We fear for the ones who forget. The minute they do so, they're the ones who are going to have this happen to them."

Norman DeWilde, Nevaeh's great-uncle, surveys the items of tribute left on the riverbank where her body was found.

Tomorrow will mark one month since the body of 5-year-old Nevaeh Buchanan was found along the River Raisin. Still, authorities have yet to release the results of an autopsy and no suspects have been named. In an article in this morning's Toledo Blade, the girl's grandmother says she still has many questions about what exactly happened to her granddaughter. Nevaeh went missing May 24th from the Charlotte Arms Apartment complex where she lived. Fishermen found her body nearly 2 weeks later in the River Raisin.

5-year-old Nevaeh may have been buried alive, autopsy results reveal
Dirt in lungs reveals clues to girl's death
BY AMBER HUNT • FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER • July 14, 2009

Nevaeh Buchanan – the 5-year-old Monroe girl who was kidnapped, killed and buried on the banks of the River Raisin under a layer of concrete – might have been buried alive, results from an autopsy indicate.

The girl’s cause of death has been ruled asphyxiation; the manner, homicide, a source told the Free Press.

Testing on the girl’s body, including her lungs, show that she died after inhaling dirt. Nevaeh’s body was discovered June 4 by fishermen 10 days after she disappeared from outside of her Monroe apartment complex.

The disappearance prompted a region-wide search that turned up empty. It wasn’t until a father and son felt recently poured concrete crumbling beneath them as they fished on the riverbank that the girl was discovered.

Officials said her cause of death wasn’t immediately apparent as she had no outward signs of trauma. Nevaeh was either held down in dirt until she quit breathing or she was buried alive, the source told the Free Press

"I am still in an emotional shock that she was taken. Hearing that she was buried alive makes the crime even more heinous," said Shaun Lawson, Nevaeh Buchanan's cousin.

The Wayne County Medical Examiner's office said dirt was found in the girl's lungs, meaning she was either held down to the ground or buried alive.

Investigators said early examinations did not identify a cause of death because no outward signs of trauma were found on Buchanan's body.

Authorities plan to search again the Monroe apartment complex where Nevaeh lived.

Investigators said they plan to question a woman who has ties to George Kennedy and Roy Smith. Both Kenney and Smith are convicted sex offenders and have been named people of interest in the case.

The Monroe County sheriff will hold a news conference Wednesday to release more details.

Autopsy results indicate a 5-year-old girl whose body was found buried near a Michigan river suffocated after inhaling dirt.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Department said Tuesday that Nevaeh Buchanan either was buried alive or had her face forcibly pressed into dirt by another person. The autopsy could not determine the exact manner of death.

No one has been arrested in the girl's death.

UPDATED: 5-year-old Nevaeh may have been buried alive, authorities say
Article published July 14, 2009

Sheriff Crutchfield said last night in an interview that the girl may have been buried alive — or held down in the dirt, causing her to suffocate. The autopsy showed there was no trauma such as broken bones or bruises to the body, he said.

The sheriff said the exact day or time of the girl’s death couldn’t be determined, but the autopsy indicated she died shortly after she was abducted.

“I can’t give you a day or time. But it would have been soon after she disappeared. Within a window of a day or so, if not on that very same evening,” he said.

Shaun Lawson, Ms. Lawson’s son and Nevaeh’s cousin, said she was found face down in the shallow grave and naked, with her clothes tucked underneath her.

Sheriff Crutchfield said he wouldn’t comment on whether the victim was found naked or sexually assaulted. “We aren’t discussing those types of details,” he said.

The sheriff said toxicology testing conducted by the medical examiner’s office on the victim showed that she wasn’t drugged.

“We continue to interview people daily. We are working to tips and they lead us to other tips. We have to clarify those tips and move on,” the sheriff said.

Sheriff Crutchfield said testing being conducted at the Michigan State Police Crime Laboratory on evidence recovered at the gravesite was still ongoing. He refused to comment on what was found at the scene.

Sheriff Crutchfield said investigators are working on the theory that Nevaeh was taken from the apartment complex.

Autopsy: Nevaeh may have been buried alive
last modified July 14. 2009 7:23PM
<snipped>
An autopsy showed that Nevaeh Buchanan died of choking on dirt and perhaps even was buried alive, officials confirmed tonight.

Monroe County Sheriff Tilman Crutchfield said he received the autopsy results today.

"The autopsy results have revealed that Nevaeh’s death was caused by aspiration of fine particulate material (dirt)," the sheriff said in a statement. "This means that Nevaeh’s face was forcibly maintained or embedded into a dirt surface. Whether this resulted from another person forcibly pressing her face into dirt or whether she was buried alive could not be determined."

The Rev. Dale Hayford, who has provided spiritual support for the family throughout the ordeal, said they knew for some time that the 5-year-old could have been buried alive but the police confirmed that possibility today.
"They’re just stunned," Pastor Hayford said. "Everybody’s stunned."

Sheriff Crutchfield said investigators still are working on the case daily, following tips and conducting interviews.

The Free Press is now reporting that the autopsy results indicate that Nevaeh may have been buried alive. The 5-year-old’s cause of death has been ruled asphyxiation and the manner of death a homicide.

Tests done on the body show she died by inhaling dirt. There were no signs of trauma to the body.

No arrests have been made in the case, but two sex offenders who were friends of the Nevaeh’s mother, Jennifer Buchanan have been jailed for violating their paroles.

Roy Smith, 48, and George Kennedy, 39, both admitted they violated their paroles by being in contact with Buchanan, since neither was supposed to have contact with anyone who has children.

Authorities named the men persons of interest early on in the case when Nevaeh disappeared.

According to the Free Press, Smith and Kennedy could spend 35 and 13 years behind bars for being associated with Nevaeh’s mother.

Autopsy shows Nevaeh may have been buried alive

Nevaeh Buchanan was alive but unconscious when she was buried in a shallow grave near the River Raisin police told family members, say Diana Lawson, a great-aunt of the little girl.

Lawson said police informed them that Nevaeh died of asphyxiation and may have been buried alive. The family was notified about the autopsy finding about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The child was buried face down with dirt in her throat, Lawson said.

"(Detectives said) she did not suffer any trauma," Lawson said. "They said she was buried face down."

Lawson, 57, said she was present when Sherry Buchanan was told by detectives at her job at a Monroe grocery store. Lawson said the news hit the family hard.

She had a warning for who is responsible for Nevaeh's death: "We got this close and we'll get closer. Eventually you'll get caught."

Nevaeh's father, Shane Hinojosa, blasted the Monroe County Sheriff's Department for not telling him about the autopsy findings first hand.

"I just cussed out the detective," Hinojosa said. "None of this should have been leaked out without telling the family first."

Hinojosa refused to comment further, saying he's "on a gag order" not to talk about his daughter's murder.

Nevaeh was laid to rest a month ago Monday after a funeral attended by hundreds. Nevaeh’s mother and grandmother, Jennifer and Sherry Buchanan, are heartbroken, Lawson said.

“Sherry’s at work and she’s not ready even to come home,” said Lawson at about 6 p.m., as media people began swarming the apartment complex parking lot where the women live. “They can’t face this.”

Autopsy: Nevaeh possibly buried alive
Autopsy report says Monroe girl died after inhaling dirt

The office received the autopsy results from the Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office on Tuesday.

"The autopsy results have revealed that Nevaeh's death was caused by aspiration of (dirt)," according to a press release from the Monroe County Sheriff's Office. "This means that Nevaeh's face was forcibly maintained or embedded into a dirt surface. Whether this resulted from another person forcibly pressing her face into dirt or whether she was buried alive could not be determined."

Mike Buchanan, Nevaeh's uncle, said the family has been in rare contact with authorities since Nevaeh's funeral. He said he last spoke with Monroe County Sheriff's Office officials the day after the funeral.

"I haven't heard nothing from any of them. I don't know how to take it," said Buchanan who spoke to The News before he found out about the results of the autopsy report. "There's a lot of stuff swirling around, but we're only waiting for the truth. It's difficult to talk about it."

Two men, both sex offenders, were arrested. One of the men questioned by the Monroe County Sheriff's Office is George Kennedy, who had served time for having sex with a 15-year-old girl. Nevaeh's mother and Kennedy had dated before they became close friends. Kennedy, who remains a person of interest in the case, is in custody on a parole violation. Roy Lee Smith, another person of interest in the case, also is in custody for violating parole because of his contact with Nevaeh.

Girl, 5, died of asphyxiation, inhaled dirt, autopsy shows

Diana Lawson, Nevaeh's great-aunt, said detectives went yesterday to the Food Town in Monroe where her sister Sherry Buchanan works to discuss the autopsy findings. "They said to her Nevaeh was buried alive," Ms. Lawson said. "She had a little dirt in her throat. She didn't suffer anything."

Mr. Lawson said that state taxpayers will end up footing the bill if the killer or killers are arrested and convicted.

"This guy, if they catch him, will end up getting three meals a day and watching cable TV," he said. "The person needs to be caught. That is the main thing. Until the person is caught, every child in this community is in danger."

When asked if there was any solace to autopsy findings that Nevaeh may have died unconscious and didn't suffer trauma, Mr. Lawson said: "It makes it worse. She was buried alive. That's got to be the cruelest way to go - to have all that fear in you when you are dying."

Sheriff Crutchfield said "We continue to interview people daily. We are working on tips and they lead us to other tips. We have to clarify those tips and move on," the sheriff said.

Sheriff Crutchfield said testing being conducted at the Michigan State Police Crime Laboratory on evidence recovered at the gravesite is ongoing. He refused to comment on what was found at the scene.

This means that Nevaeh's face was forcibly maintained or embedded into a dirt surface. Whether this resulted from another person forcibly pressing her face into dirt or whether she was buried alive could not be determined. Toxicology was noncontributory."

Tuesday night some of her family and friends gathered at the Charlotte Arms apartments where Nevaeh was last seen.

"I really don't feel relieved yet, I want to know who the killers are, if they're still out there. The only thing I can say to them is that we've gotten this far, a step closer and before we know it we will see you in court and we will ask you why you did what you did," said Nevaeh's great aunt Diana Lawson.

"Now knowing that they've found more information, they need to just go find some more and hopefully catch whoever did it and if they're watching, they need to tell them what they did," said Buchanan family friend Dorothy Morse.
