Source: Cops move to dump Drew Peterson's son

August 28, 2010 (OAK BROOK, IL) (WLS) -- The Oak Brook Police Dept. has taken a first step toward firing the son of accused wife killer Drew Peterson, according to a high-ranking law enforcement source.

Department officials placed Stephen Peterson on paid administrative leave Friday. No reason was provided for the suspension of Peterson, a 6-year veteran Oak Brook policeman.

However, the ABC7 I-Team has learned that Peterson's suspension was a result of hiding weapons for his father Drew, including an illegal AR-15 assault rifle.

A source familiar with details of the Peterson case told the I-Team on Saturday that it was Stephen Peterson's testimony about accepting the weapons from his father that prompted the first move toward termination. "We believe he was obligated to turn them in" to authorities the law enforcement source said.

...............................snip................................................

This is not the first time Drew Peterson's police officer son has been in trouble. Stephen Peterson has been suspended on at least five occasions in his short career. His resume of punishment includes a suspension in April, 2008 for violating Oak Brook Police Dept. rules. He wore his police uniform and used a village squad car to drive to Joliet for his appearance in front of a Will County grand jury that was investigating his father.

That suspension followed an I-Team report in Dec. 2007 that Illinois state investigators had subpoenaed the personnel files of three men with connections to the village of Oakbrook Police Department. Among them was Steve Peterson.State authorities removed Steve Peterson's police personnel file and other records of his patrol activities during key period of his step-mothers' disappearances. In 2007 the I-Team was by investigators that state police seized the Oakbrook department personnel files of two of Peterson's closest friends on the force. One had resigned while under investigation for professional misconduct. The other was terminated for lying and unauthorized access of criminal files.

Chicago Sun Times Gives Coward A Platform: Ignoring Stacy Peterson and Kathleen Savio

http://murphymilanojournal.blogspot.com/2010/08/chicago-sun-times-gives-coward-platform.html

"If you are outraged by the Chicago Sun Times and their disregard for the families of Kathleen Savio and Stacy Peterson by making headlines of Drew Peterson's jailhouse letters, do your part and let them know by calling, emailing or faxing. Nothing will change unless action is taken. The columnist, Micheal Sneed and her editor, should know that by making decisions based on headlines and readership instead of integrity and ethics is one of the reasons the public fuels people like Drew Peterson."

The Drew Peterson letter: My life in jail

BY MICHAEL SNEED Sun-Times Columnist

"He says he sleeps on a lawn-chair mattress in a cold cell, where he is being housed in isolation and is frequently strip searched.
Besides his lawyers, the only human contacts for Drew Peterson -- who is awaiting trial in the death of his third wife, Kathleen Savio -- are prison guards and an inmate who brings him meals, clean clothes and linen "passed through a chuckhole," Peterson says in a handwritten letter to Chicago Sun-Times columnist Michael Sneed."

Regarding Drew's letter to the Chicago Sun Times
The Chicago Sun-Times "Slapping the Face of Justice"

The first headline ran on August 15th titled “The Drew Peterson Letter My Life in Jail.” I was outraged when Michael Sneed, an award winning journalist for whom I have great respect, decided to publish this letter without any regard for the families of Stacy Peterson and Kathleen Savio. Granted the newspaper provided a disclaimer similar to taking a Kleenex and blowing ones nose and then saying excuse me while I go and wash my hands the editor before running Peterson’s words included “ Sun-Times is aware of the pain the Savio family has endured while waiting for justice in the murder of their loved one.” Interesting to note how the word "aware" is used as it refers to pain. Was the Sun-Times "aware" that if the crime scene investigation had been conducted properly, by law enforcement, Stacy Peterson would in my opinion not have vanished from the planet? Is the Chicago Sun-Times also "aware" the pain and suffering they have caused by giving so much ink in the form of printed lip service to someone facing murder charges for an ex-spouse and the only suspect in a current wife's disappearance?" Headline: Stacy Peterson is Missing

When the Chicago Sun-Times printed the letters last week from the incarcerated former Bolingbrook police Sergeant Drew Peterson, the two columns I wrote in response to the blood dripping words was for two women, Kathleen Savio and Stacy Peterson, each silenced, in my opinion, because of one man’s rage.
Stacy Peterson and Kathleen Savio are not here to speak for themselves. As a matter of fact, no one protected them while they were alive, not law enforcement, State’s Attorney’s or State Investigators.
The carefully orchestrated letters authored by Inmate Drew Peterson should be reviewed more carefully. This, by the way, is a hell of a lot more than I can say was ever done when Kathleen’s beaten body, in a dry bathtub no less, was ruled “accidental ” by a bunch of blue light special investigators who by all accounts should either be assigned to desk duty or be given mandatory retirement.

Much much more at link above!! Thank you Susan Murphy Milano!!

The state's Third District Appellate Court shot down Peterson's effort to be released and alerted his attorneys to the decision Monday.

"This means we have to go to step two," said Joseph "Shark" Lopez, one of the half-dozen lawyers defending Peterson against charges he murdered his third wife, Kathleen Savio, in March 2004.

Step two, Lopez explained, was to take Peterson's case to the state Supreme Court. And if Peterson does not find satisfaction there, Lopez said, he would "be going to the Federal Building" for step three.

Is Stacy Peterson dead?

Published: Oct. 28, 2010 at 5:53 PM

BOLINGBROOK, Ill., Oct. 28 (UPI) -- The disappearance of Stacy Peterson, the fourth wife of a former Bolingbrook, Ill., police sergeant, remains a potential homicide three years later, police say.
................
Peterson has been in near-solitary confinement for a year and a half while an appellate court decides what hearsay evidence can be used against him at trial.

His lawyer, Joel Brodsky, told The (Joliet, Ill.) Herald-News he doubted the state would charge Peterson with Stacy's death.

"If (prosecutors) can't convict Drew Peterson on the stronger case, they won't charge him with the weak one," Brodsky said.

Police Chief: Peterson's Actions Obstructed Official Investigation
Hinsdale-Clarendon Hills, IL Patch

Peterson's son did not disclose he was in possession of his father's weapons while State Police executed a search warrant on Drew Peterson's home following the disappearance of Stacy Peterson.

"Oak Brook Police Chief Thomas Sheahan testified Thursday night that he believed Officer Stephen Peterson held back crucial evidence while the Illinois State Police were trying to find his missing stepmother, Stacy Peterson. Stephen Peterson is the son of Drew Peterson, currently in prison on charges that he murdered his wife Kathleen Savio in 2004.

The hearing was held to determine whether Stephen Peterson, 31, should be dismissed from the department. Prosecutors are accusing Stephen Peterson of deliberately hiding three of his father's firearms while state police searched Drew Peterson's home in October of 2007.

"[Stephen Peterson] understands that a weapon could have been used in a crime against his young mother. He also understands that within the three weapons there could be fingerprints, DNA, fiber," said Sheahan."

Drew Peterson's son Thomas takes a stand

---snipped---

Chicago Sun-Times
Jan 15, 2011 08:53PM

" Sneed has learned Thomas Peterson, son of accused wife-murderer Drew Peterson — and of Kathleen Savio, the woman Peterson is accused of killing — is taking a legal stand in defense of his father.

In an impassioned letter sent to Sneed, Thomas Peterson wrote:

“My name is Thomas Peterson and I am now 18 years old, I am an adult, I can now make my own decisions, and nobody has the right to speak for me anymore.”

† Translation: Now that he is no longer a minor, Thomas, an honor student at Bolingbrook High School, has signed a document releasing his father from all financial claims arising from the death of his mother: specifically the wrongful death suit filed on his behalf by his aunt and grandfather."

Peterson’s hearsay appeal set for Feb. 16

--snipped--

"OTTAWA — An appeal of hearsay evidence rulings in the Drew Peterson murder case will be before the Illinois Appellate Court on Feb. 16.

Oral arguments will begin at 1:15 p.m., said Gist Fleshman, clerk of the Third District Appellate Court in Ottawa.

A request by a Chicago TV station to film the proceedings is pending before the court as well, Gist said.

After oral arguments are presented, it could take the judges one to six months — or longer — to make a ruling.

... Third appeal

"This is the third appeal involving Peterson’s troubles with the law. The first two involved a gun charge and a request to re-open his third wife’s estate, Fleshman said.

The latest appeal involves hearsay evidence prosecutors want to present in Peterson’s murder trial.

In July, Will County State’s Attorney Jim Glasgow appealed a pre-trial ruling by former Will County Chief Judge Stephen White who excluded some hearsay evidence as inadmissible.

"....Peterson, a former Bolingbrook police officer, was charged in May 2009 with drowning his third wife, Kathleen Savio, in 2004. The case has drawn national media attention.

Peterson’s fourth wife, Stacy Peterson, disappeared in October 2007. After she disappeared, authorities reviewed Savio’s death and reversed the cause of death from accidental to homicide."

Tom Peterson still named in wrongful death suit
via The Shorewood Patch

--snipped--

"The lawyer for the family of Drew Peterson's slain third wife likes his chances in the civil suit against the disgraced former Bolingbrook cop.

"We're pretty confident our breach of fiduciary duty count will now stand," said Arlington Heights Attorney Martin Glink following a brief appearance Thursday at the Joliet courthouse annex.

Not only that, but Glink says Peterson's third oldest son, Thomas Peterson, who turned 18 on Jan. 5, is still a part of the case. This despite a letter Thomas supposedly wrote claiming he wants out.

"I question seriously if that was due to some undue influence, unfortunately," Glink said of the letter Thomas supposedly wrote releasing his father from any financial responsibility resulting from the lawsuit brought by his mother's family.

"He might think that was his idea but that seems to be part of Mr. Peterson's repertoire," Glink said, echoing allegations made by prosecutors that Peterson is a master manipulator who, among others, pulled the strings of his much younger fourth wife, Stacy, a woman 30 years his junior."

Peterson prosecutors argue against 'Drew's Law'

--snipped--

"In attempting to get hearsay statements admitted in Drew Peterson’s murder case, Will County prosecutors today found themselves arguing against the very law they helped create.

Saddled with a botched police investigation several years ago, State’s Attorney James Glasgow had pushed for a state statute that would allow hearsay statements against Peterson at trial. Dubbed Drew's Law by legal experts and legislators, he hailed the bill's passage as a way of letting Peterson's third and fourth wives speak from the grave.

Glasgow acknowledged the strange turn as he asked the Third District Appellate Court to ignore his statute in favor of the less-restrictive common law. “Ironically, I’m in a unique position here,” he told the three-member panel. “I wrote the statute.”

The proceedings — which were televised live, a first in state history — focused on prosecutors’ desire to admit several hearsay statements at trial.
