Grays Harbor Undersheriff Rick Scott says after two weeks, the command center for the search for the missing 11-year old will be the sheriff's office.

Scott told KXRO the shift should not be taken as a sign of giving up. Investigators are still hoping some clue may be discovered that will lead to Lindsey.

Search Continues For Missing McCleary Girl, Now From a Different Office
July 10, 2009 at 10:20 am
<snipped>
The base of operations for the search will be in the County Sheriff's offices starting this weekend.

Grays Harbor County Undersheriff Rick Scott tells KBKW that the McCleary Bear Festival this weekend required the parking and rooms that were being used to accommodate the investigators in the case. "We'll work out of here, go to McCleary as needed, and be able to follow up on leads outside of McCleary in a more organized fashion."

Officials will begin tearing down the extensive interagency efforts in McCleary, and releasing some of the 15 to 10 officers per day that have been assisting in the investigation. "We're going to have to accept that this is going to be a case that's assigned to a smaller team of officers" said Scott.

Scott said that video footage taken from a nearby Shell station yielded no stand-out leads, some leads are still being investigated from the video. Scott added that the footage is now being investigated by forensics teams, in hopes of enhancing some of the video.

Police are following up on several leads in the case, Scott tells us that the Forensic Investigation on Lindsey's home computer has turned up little more, and that they have expanded the computer level search to other computers that Lindsey may have used to access her internet profiles, including the local public library's computer.

MISSING McCLEARY GIRL LIKELY ABDUCTED SAY POLICE
July 02, 2009
<snipped>
While a distraught mother waits by the phone for a call from her missing daughter or the police to tell her they have found her child, law enforcement officials in Grays Harbor County say it appears “likely” that missing 10-year-old Lindsey Baum was abducted, perhaps by someone she knew.

Detectives investigating the case say it is still possible the girl ran away, but after almost six days and no word from her or a hint of how she vanished, they said it’s more likely she was the victim of abduction.

With not much to go on after a week and intensive searching by several agencies and search & rescue volunteers, Grays Harbor County officials have scaled back volunteer search and rescue efforts.

County undersheriff Rick Scott said, “We’re not ending it, we’re just temporarily suspending it.”

Scott said most of Thursday’s (today’s) work was conducted by detectives following up on tips and interviewing potential witnesses.

Officials hoping festival crowd will generate leads
Friday, July 10, 2009 11:12 AM PDT
<snipped>
Lindsey Baum’s presence will be felt at the McCleary Bear Festival this weekend, as volunteers pass out fliers and law enforcement officials talk to revellers who may have some information. But as time goes by, the search for the 11-year-old girl who vanished into thin air is running low on leads.

There, Undersheriff Rick Scott said his team of officers will set up a “war room” with resources not available in McCleary. The number of officers working on the case will also be pared down, which Scott said would give the case more focus.

“Having a lot of people working on a case can bring in a lot of information,” Scott said. But putting that information together, having a deep understanding of what it means, is what helps solve complicated cases, he said.

“It’s like putting together a puzzle,” Scott said. “Too many people working on it and it gets chaotic.”

To that end, deputies will sit down with the many, many stacks of paperwork generated by the investigation so far to search for any overlooked clues or bits of information, Scott said.

Investigators poring over pages of clues
Saturday, July 11, 2009 12:56 AM PDT
<snipped>
A handful of dedicated investigators must sort through hundreds of tips, interviews transcripts and notes as they search for the key to finding 11-year-old Lindsey Baum.

Grays Harbor Undersheriff Rick Scott said the dozens of officers, searchers and volunteers who helped during the past weeks will be replaced by four to six full-time investigators.

They are charged with putting together the random and scattered clues into a big picture to determine what happened to Baum on June 26.

“We’re just continuing to pore through the hundreds and hundreds of pages of papers,” Scott said.

A new voicemail extension has also been created at the sheriff’s office for accepting tips after hours, he said. Anyone with information can contact the office at (360) 249-3711, if after hours, dial 543.

Scott said the investigators will track specific leads and will still be dedicated the case on a full-time basis.

Scott says sight of deputies pulling out of McCleary should not be taken as a sign of giving up and that investigators are still holding out hope that some clue may be discovered that will lead to Lindsey's whereabouts. In the last two weeks, over 100 searchers have used dogs, horses and helicopters to search the McCleary area for the missing girl who disappeared on the night of June 26th. Around 300 tips have been investigated and tried and true methods have yielded no clues as to what happened two weeks ago as Lindsey walked home from a friends house making this what veterans are calling "the most frustrating case they have faced".

"It's just getting harder and harder. I think every day that goes by, everybody just gets a little more upset," said Kim Paull, Lindsey's aunt.

He and other visitors grabbed flyers from volunteers. "I'm gonna post them in Tumwater, Olympia and the Lacey area," he says.

That's exactly what McCleary police, the FBI and the Grays Harbor County Sheriff's Office want. Law enforcement personnel took advantage of the influx of visitors to familiarize people with Lindsey's plight.

Her mother and this town still hold out hope, as exemplified on a sign at a local store that says simply "Hope & Pray."

"I feel her in my heart. And I know the statistics, but I know she's out there, and I know she's alive. And I want to her to know ... that I'm never going to stop looking for you," says Lindsey's mother, Melissa Baum.

The lively music and bright sunshine swept away much of the cloud that has hung over the small town recently. Many enjoyed the festivities, but could not forget 11-year-old Lindsey Baum, who disappeared from just a few blocks away two weeks ago.

Several volunteers passed out fliers to people coming through town and asked for donations for Baum’s family.

Strong looked around at hundreds slurping sno-cones and nibbling elephant ears, The festival had gone smoothly, though fewer children attended the kid’s day events on Friday.

Parents of Missing Girl Speak Out On 'Early Show'
Posted: 11:19 am PDT July 13, 2009
Updated: 12:24 pm PDT July 13, 2009
<snipped>
The search for missing 11-year-old Lindsey Baum got nationwide attention when her parents appeared on CBS' 'The Early Show' Monday morning.

“My heart tells me she is alive; where I don’t know,” Melissa Baum, Lindsey’s mother, said on 'The Early Show.' “I would give anything to know where she is.”

Authorities have been working on the theory that she might have run away to Tennessee, where her father lives, but Rick Scott of the Gray’s Harbor County Sheriff’s Office said it’s unlikely that someone her age would be gone this long without “surfacing in some manner.” Lindsey’s father, Scott Baum, a member of the Tennessee National Guard who is deploying to Iraq soon, told authorities that he has not seen or heard from his daughter since her disappearance.

Officials have not had any new developments in the case but ask anyone with information to contact the Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s office at 866-915-8299 or send an e-mail to: soadmin@co.grays-harbor.wa.us.

MCCLEARY, Wash. -- While the official search for Lindsey Baum has been scaled back, no one in this town is giving up on finding her.

"We continue to get tips, we continually talk to the public," said McLeary Police Chief George Crumb. "I don't believe they've given up hope."

The investigation, which has involved multiple local, state and federal law enforcement agencies, has turned up nothing.

"Still from day one we haven't gotten any real viable good leads," Crumb said. "Leads keep coming in, but actual things we can work on, nothing has been presented to us."

Detectives don't want to see Lindsey's story disappear from the headlines, because each story could kick loose that one crucial tip.
