Psychiatrist: Ramsey Suspect Seems Like 'Ill Man'
Exclusive Interviews and Telephone Recordings Said to Suggest Karr Is 'Deeply Disturbed, Psychiatrically Ill'

Aug. 26, 2006 — Alleged voice recordings of the suspect in the killing of child beauty queen JonBenet Ramsey and exclusive interviews with the suspect's relatives reveal a "deeply disturbed, psychiatrically ill man," according to a renowned forensic psychiatrist.

Dr. Keith Ablow, host of the upcoming "Dr. Keith Ablow Show," reached that conclusion on "Good Morning America Weekend Edition" after listening to alleged telephone recordings of the suspect, John Mark Karr, broadcast exclusively by ABC News, and after viewing ABC News' exclusive interviews with Karr's father, half brother and first wife.

"GMA" asked Ablow to review the public evidence that surfaced this past week in advance of Karr's first court hearing on Monday, and before the debut of Ablow's television show on Sept. 11.--->>

The woman two California lawyers selected as a local attorney for the accused murderer of JonBenet Ramsey has been practicing for 10 months.

Rachel Cohen, 29, of Lafayette, emerged Friday as the surprising selection to work with San Jose attorneys Jamie Harmon and Patience Van Zandt - if they continue to represent John Mark Karr.

conflicting clues a hurdle....(good read)

It's not that there was necessarily a shortage of evidence in the JonBenet Ramsey homicide nearly 10 years ago. But — in addition to actions taken in the early hours of the investigation that contaminated the crime scene — one problem that plagues investigators to this day is that the evidence that was intact was conflicting, experts say.

summary: during a move from Alabama to Petaluma in the summer of 2000, John Karr left his wife and kids in a motel for a full day while he went and walked around the grounds of the Ramsey house in Boulder. He said it was research for his book, said his acquaintance Dennis Melfa.

Also: John attended a Rite of Christian Initiation class with Melfa at the St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church. Karr sang in the San Francisco Cable Car Chorus. He drove a Jaguar at that time, but his wife was the primary breadwinner.

John asked Melfa who was a real estate broker about a certain house he liked, which turned out to be the house Polly Klaas had been abducted from.

Melfa visited Karr when he was jailed for 6 months for child *advertiser censored*. Melfa could not tell whether he was guilty or not. Karr insisted he was set up by Wendy Hutchens.

Karr missed the baptism class so he was baptised in the jail chapel. After release he began attending 5 pm Sat. Mass.

August 27, 2006 -- Prosecutors in JonBenet Ramsey's decade-old murder are poring over eight photographs that John Mark Karr's brother says prove he was in Georgia at the time of the slaying - even though he is not pictured in them and there is no time stamp on them.

Michael Karr gave authorities pictures after they flew to Norcross, Ga., on Tuesday. Investigators grilled Michael and his wife for four hours, his attorney, Gary Harris, told The Post.

Relatives insist John Karr took the pictures at a family Christmas party in Atlanta in 1996, meaning he couldn't have been in Boulder when JonBenet was killed on Dec. 26 that year.

Although John Karr does not appear in any of the images, Harris told The Post that all the relatives who were at the party insist he was there and was behind the camera.

"They all remember him being there," Harris said.

"He never missed a Christmas - not once. In 1996, John was there with his wife. They always had Thanksgivings and Christmases together."

The photos were not dated, but Harris said it was clear they were from 1996 because they feature Michael Karr's baby, who was born 13 days before Christmas that year. They also gave investigators a thank-you note that John Karr's then-wife, Laura, wrote to Michael and his wife, Reneau. "We had a great time," Harris said the note read, insisting the "we" meant Laura and John Karr.

A source at the Boulder District Attorney's Office told the Daily Camera newspaper that DA Mary Lacy ordered investigators to track down relatives after reports circulated of family members insisting Karr had been with them at the time JonBenet was killed.

Prosecutors had learned of Karr's name just five days before he was arrested in Thailand and confessed to the murder. They had no DNA evidence linking him to the case, a source told the Daily Camera, and appear to have focused on Karr as a suspect because he had told others of elements of the crime that had never been made public.

Investigators so far have been unable to place Karr in Colorado at the time of the killing, but have contacted a man who claims to remember seeing a man resembling Karr at the Boulder bus station in the early-morning hours of Dec. 26, 1996, the Rocky Mountain News reported.

The revelations came as a Boulder County judge issued a gag order forbidding all authorities from publicly discussing the case.

Meanwhile, Karr was held in a private jail cell in Boulder before a court appearance tomorrow to face murder charges.

Unlike the sumptuous meal of paté and sautéed prawns he ate on his flight back from Thailand, Karr dined on a more basic prison meal of beef stew with buttered noodles, Spanish rice and chili dogs for lunch.

Petaluma confidants paint portrait of Karr

An interesting quote:
At dinner, Melfa said, Karr also said he was thinking about starting a church in San Francisco fashioned after "one those those Jim Bakker, great big revival type things."

"He figured with all those homeless, and all those lost souls in San Francisco, that he could lead them and really become something big doing that," Melfa said.

Defense requests Karr's DNA tests

By Felisa Cardona
Denver Post Staff Writer

Boulder Public Defender Seth Temin arrives Friday at the Boulder County Jail to visit John Mark Karr. Temin says he'll seek to block testing of DNA samples taken from Karr in Thailand. (Post / Helen H. Richardson)

John Mark Karr's DNA has already been tested by several labs according to a defense motion filed today in Boulder County Court.

Karr, suspected in the 1996 murder of 6-year-old JonBenet Ramsey, is due to appear in court this afternoon to be advised that he is under suspicion in her death.

In documents, Karr's lawyer, Seth Temin, asks the court to allow him access to information and materials used to take Karr's DNA and methods used to test it.

"The circumstances of this case present a unique and storied testing history," Temin wrote. "The reliability of the evidence in this case, the witnesses' qualifications in this case, the usefulness of testimony to the jury in this case, and the weight of the probative value of the evidence in this case versus unfair prejudice are all likely to become issues."

Temin specifically requested all serology and DNA tests that have been performed and continue to be done.

It appears that more than one laboratory handled or had custody of samples subjected to testing in this case and more than one expert has evaluated the samples and testing results," Temin wrote.

The motion also asks for a listing of precautions taken against contamination, instances of laboratory contaminations, and records of trouble-shooting or problems during testing.

Karr, 41, has made public statements that he was with JonBenet when she died, that he loved her and that her death was an accident.

Sources: Karr's DNA not a match, charges won't be filed
KUSA - 9NEWS has confirmed from two sources that the DNA taken from John Mark Karr does not match the DNA samples taken from the crime scene in the JonBenet Ramsey murder case.

9NEWS has also confirmed from different sources that no charges will be filed against Karr in connection with the Ramsey case by the Boulder County District Attorney's office.

Samples of Karr's saliva and hair were taken in Boulder after his arrival on Thursday. Those samples were tested over the weekend inside the Denver Police Department's Crime lab.

9NEWS has confirmed that Karr's DNA is ruled out as the foreign DNA left on JonBenet Ramsey's body when she was murdered in December 1996.

JonBenet was covered in a blanket when her body was found. Foreign hair fibers were found on that blanket and they did not match any of the Ramsey family or approximately 100 people that were tested.

Karr was taken into custody in Bangkok, Thailand earlier this month in connection with the murder. He arrived in Boulder Thursday afternoon on a probable cause warrant for charges of first-degree murder, kidnapping and sexual assault on a child.

Karr said at a press conference in Thailand he was with JonBenet when she died.

Karr is scheduled to be in court Monday afternoon for an advisement hearing.

He still faces charges of child *advertiser censored* in California.

9NEWS.com and 9NEWS at 4, 5 and 6 p.m. will have the latest on this developing story.

KUSA - John Mark Karr was released from custody Monday afternoon after 9NEWS confirmed from two sources that his DNA did not match the samples taken from the crime scene in the JonBenet Ramsey murder case.

The Boulder County Sheriff's office says he was transported from the Boulder County Jail to the Justice Center by deputies. However, when authorities were told no charges would be filed, he was released.

Authorities in Sonoma County, Calif. did not request that the Boulder County Sheriff's office hold Karr on their outstanding misdemanor warrants of child *advertiser censored* charges.

9NEWS confirmed earlier from different sources that no charges will be filed against Karr in connection with the Ramsey case by the Boulder County District Attorney's office.

The Boulder County public defender, Seth Temin, announced Monday afternoon that Karr will not appear in court at 4:30 p.m. for an advisement hearing as originally scheduled.

The Boulder County Sheriff's office initially said Karr was then released from custody, but they later said he is still in custody pending charges of child *advertiser censored* in Sonoma County, Calif.

I was just glancing at the Rocky Mountain News this morning during a quick break at work. I found this political cartoon and a letter to the editor:

The cartoon will be on this site probably tomorrow. A couple are watching clowns on tv and wondered if it were the cirque de soliel. One says no it's the JonBenet media circus. it should be posted as 9/7/06 tomorrow here:

Lacy said the Whites have asked her for years for public exoneration, saying it has been difficult for Fleet White to get a job because of speculation they were involved in the crime. The Whites say they were defamed during the investigation.

They said they still want an apology from Lacy.

"I tried to do them a favor, but obviously it wasn't enough," Lacy said.

Incoming Boulder County District Attorney Stan Garnett said he'll decide what to do with the investigation in his first 30 days on the job, which he starts Jan. 13. His predecessor, Mary Lacy, publicly exonerated the Ramsey family this year in the Dec. 26, 1996, murder.

Garnett said he might send the case back to the police. The DA's office took over the investigation in 2002 because of criticism of the police department's handling of it.
